Sapphyra
We’d managed to get a generator and bring it to Beacon, well, what was left of Beacon anyway. Just another thing I screwed up, I guess. With the generator running, we could bring the med bay back to life. Now if we could only do the same for my son.
My son. I still couldn’t believe it. The man that’s been torturing me for weeks was my baby boy.
I must have fallen asleep at his bed side because Wyatt woke me up. The bags under his eyes matched mine.
“So…scale of one to ten, how heavy are you feeling right now?” He asked softly. I was proud of him for sitting on the other side of the med bay but the space next to me needed to be filled soon or I’d collapse.
“Pfft.” I closed my eyes and smirked, hiding the pain like I always do. “We’ve been through worse than this. Remember that time my brother hunted you down across the galaxy to kill you?”
He chuckled and leaned back in his chair, “I do.” His face darkened, “but that was nothing like this, Sapph.”
“I know.” I admitted, “I’m just saying, we’ll figure it out. We always figure it out.”
“Sapph.” I tried to swallow the judgment crawling up my throat. “You can’t even look at him, can you?”
“Of course I can! It’s not like he’s spent the better part of a season torturing me, pushing me until I snapped and wiped out half the fucking city!” I stood up, hand over my chest to still my violently beating heart. I know stress isn’t good for the baby but I’m just so exhausted.
“Okay.” He nodded, lacing his fingers together beneath his chin. “So tell me what you want to do here. It’s your play.”
“Mine? After all this time, you’re finally giving me the reins to do anything other than exist? Praise be to the goddess.” My jaw clenched as I spat vitriol all over him. He deserved every word…but I still felt awful for saying it. Wyatt lowered his gaze but he didn’t flinch, didn’t protest.
I sighed, finally turning towards our son. A sob caught in my throat as I reached out a hand to trace the scars on his face and chest. Scars that I gave him.
My other hand stretched out towards the door and Guy came in not a second later. He sat beside me, holding my hand tight like I’d float away if he didn’t.
“I’m here.” He whispered, rubbing his thumb over my knuckles. “How’s he doing?”
The bed Rupert laid in had a soft white glow beneath it. The pancake thin white mattress had nanotech within it that sped up the healing process and also repaired internal injuries. For those that had a fast healing factor like myself and other dragons, it wouldn’t take more than a few minutes to set us back to full health.
“He’s been like this for three hours. Nothing’s changed…Guy,” my voice caught and I fought like hell to remain in control, “he’s not getting better and it’s all my fault!” A sob tore through me as Guy pulled me into his chest.
“Give it time, angel, the generators running at max. It’s probably just slow because Beacon’s used to having a million gigawatts or something, right?”
Low power. I wish that was an acceptable answer. The only acceptable thing for me was an answer as to how we even got into this situation.
“Maybe. Or maybe I did too much damage to his body. Insight is a really good ability after all.” There were no tears. I wouldn’t allow them right now. Instead, I planned on making the person who did this pay. I might have hurt him but we never would have been at odds if it wasn’t for Barbie.
I glanced at Wyatt and noticed his amber eyes were gone, replaced with Noa’s blue and gold.
“He thought it would be a good idea to give you two some privacy.” Noa shrugged. “I told him he was being a bitch but eh, when does he ever listen to me?”
That brought me a dry smile.
“Figures he leaves us to do the hard part.” Guy mumbled, glancing at his…father-son?
“Guy, you probably feel hella weird right now.”
“Oh me? Nah. My adoptive father becoming my son was probably the smoothest thing going on in my life right now.” I had to turn my head and make sure there was a grin on his stupid-cute face.
“I’m obviously kidding. Hell yes, this is insanity!” He leaned in, kissing my forehead. “It changes nothing about how I feel about you though.”
“The question is,” Noa chimed in, crossing his arms, “what do we do with him now?”
“I don’t know.” My mouth sits in a hard line as I reach over and run my fingers through his hair. He stirs in his sleep but otherwise doesn't move.
“We can’t give him back to the city. The angry mob still has their pitchforks ready.” Guy added with a sigh. I couldn’t imagine what was going on in his head.
“He can’t stay here forever.” Noa stood up and walked over to Rupert's bedside. Noa leaned down, sniffing his son. He turned his head away from us but I could hear the whine in his throat.
“He can stay here as long as he needs. He’s our baby.” As I caress Rupert's face, the boys don’t ask who I’m talking to: they know I’m talking to both of them.
“He’s a tyrant.” Guy added, “just like—” I wheeled on him, glaring at him. Guy coughed to cover up his slip up.
“You were going to say, just like his father, right?” He tried to open his mouth with a rebuttal but I waved him off, giving all my focus to the child I failed. It scared me how shallow his breathing was.
“Sapph, I didn’t mean to—”
“Don’t. You have the right to be angry—hell, I’m angry too but there's a time and a place. This isn’t it, Guy. “ He hung his head low and stood up, headed towards the door.
“I’m uh, gonna go check on Zeke. He hasn’t been the same since Barbie’s robot or whatever, dumped him.” Good, at least that would give us time to cool off. I know it’s not Guy’s fault but I’m still upset with him.
“Go with him, Noa. I need to stay here.”
Noa clicked his tongue but he didn’t protest. Shoving his hands in his pockets, he and Guy walked out of the med bay, leaving me alone with my boy.
Rupert's breathing had evened out moments ago.
“They’re gone now. You can open your eyes, I know you’ve been faking.”
Rupert's scowl made me chuckle. “And here I was hoping to sleep a little longer," he opened his eyes and slowly turned his head to me,”…mother.”
