I know BloodLust will be back one day. And I’ll be waiting for it.
My vision started getting blurry as I calmed my breathing down. The white aura surrounding me vanished.
“Damn. Guess my invincibility frame is over. Oh well.”
I blew out a slow and steady breath, landing on a building that was surprisingly stable. I put on my goggles to search for Rupert and insight turned on without me even saying anything. Not that I needed it, but these things also function as night goggles, kinda cool.
Left, right, up, down—there he is.
Oh…oh no.
I watched as his jaw split open and his dragon form emerged, tearing him apart at the seams. A gruesomely green scaled dragon as big as a small skyscraper stared at me with big yellow eyes.
“Well…hello there. Any chance we could talk about this like civilized scaled folk?” Just like in Sanctuary.
One noxious roar in my face was all the answer I needed.
“Dammit, why do they never wanna negotiate?!” I took off into the sky, hoping to put some distance between us.
Despite his size, he was fast as fuck and nearly took me out with a swipe of his claw. Was he that fast or am I slowing down?
[Genesis Dragon form is draining users' energy at an alarming rate.]
“Yeah yeah, I get it.” The ringing in my ears certainly didn't help but I didn't have time to rest, not yet.
“Rupert, I know you're still in there! I can help you if you let me!” His glowing yellow reptilian eyes blinked both sets of eyelids. A rumble from his chest to his maw made my blood boil.
Am I a comedian? They always laugh at me when I'm just trying to save lives. Especially my own.
“Seriously, you could have just said no. Don't be rude.”
That earlier punch in Hyperion took everything I had. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do here. But at least with insight, I knew where he was the most vulnerable.
I landed on the roof again, holding my side like a tired auntie in church. He was getting faster, he's already gotten the bottom of my coat with that last swipe. One more like that and I'm done for.
“Damn. Alright, you got it.” I smiled at him even though my heart was breaking. I placed a hand on my belly and clicked my tongue. “Sorry baby. Mommy messed up like she always does.”
Rupert's claw came at me one more time. I lost the strength in my body and laid down, tired beyond the physical and mental. My spirit was done too. I closed my eyes and waited for my fate.
“Did I just catch you sleeping on the job?!” That was Noa’s voice?!
Just as the claw got close to me, Noa landed on it with a grin. He winked at me and then…it vanished. I looked up in time to see Rupert scratch his throat with his own claw.
Holy shit Wyatt and Noa are one again, in their own body…and they have their teleportation powers back!
“Superheroes don't get to sleep on the job, angel.” Guy's soothing voice gave me hope. He lifted me into his arms, cradling me close. My breathing became easier once he touched me. In fact, all the tiredness I had nearly evaporated away with Guy next to me. Warmth and comfort took over and for the first time in a long time…I felt safe.
“Guy…?” I couldn't put it into words but this was clearly new to me.
He kissed my forehead as Noa played ‘why are you hitting yourself’ with Rupert.
“That would be our mate bond. Cozy, ain't it! Plus it comes with insane benefits…like sharing energy.”
“Wait, I'm draining you?” Panic filled my throat. The last thing I wanted was to take Guy's strength. I tried pulling away from him but he held on to me tightly.
“Nah. I'm giving it up freely babe. I promise.”
Well, as long as he’s sure. I’m too tired to argue.
He sat me back down on my feet and looked around. “Where's Hyperion?”
“In outer space I'm pretty sure.” I answered, stretching my arms behind my head.
“Holy…! Wow, and I thought you knocking me across the city was amazing.” I blushed and rolled my eyes.
“Come on, let's help Noa—” he teleported behind me, panting like a dog in summer heat.
“Yeah, a little fucking help! I'm doing all the work here, goddess.” Noa looked like he ran a 5k marathon and came in last place.
“I mean it seemed like you had it covered.” I smirked at his scowl.
“Man you were on his ass. I loved watching you work.”
Noa growled, blue eyes flashing amber. Wyatt.
“I'm gonna be on everyone's ass if we don't take him down for good! The goal is to knock him out, not kill him.” He looked at me expectantly. I’m glad he said that. Otherwise I might have to break my number one rule today.
“Me? Right, yeah I'm wearing the goggles. It should be easy—”
Nope. Not easy. His weakness wasn't in one spot, it was moving. Every time he healed or breathed or did anything, his weakness bounced around his body like a ping-pong.
“Okay so the good news is; I saw it. The bad news is that it's moving around far too often. I have no idea on how to pin it down.”
“Focus, princess. Is there a pattern?”
I scrunched up my nose. “No and stop calling me that. It's randomly bouncing around. If only we had some dragons bane—”
“That wouldn't work.” Wyatt quickly interjected, rude. “He's too big.”
Guy squints at him. I’ll address that later.
“What if…what if we hit him everywhere, all at once?”
Wyatt scratches his head, “not a bad idea but uh, how?”
“Well, you’re a teleporter aren’t you? Teleport like a million knives at once.”
His mouth slanted upward in a thin line but then he smiled. “I have a better idea. How much debris are you holding right now in your void?”
“Too much. Oh!” Knives were a dumb idea, we wouldn’t have that many on hand anyway. But debris…after all the chaos and fights in the city? It was full of debris.
“Keep him busy, I’ll go suck more.” I took off flight but Wyatt grabbed my hand, concern and worry etched into his furrowed brows.
“Be careful, Sapphyra.” His eyes flickered down to my belly. “I almost lost you twice.”
My throat swelled with emotion. Love him or hate him, he was stuck with me for life.
“So sappy.” I took off just as Rupert collapsed the building we were standing on.
Vacuum activates just like insight, I suck up all the debris in the blink of an eye—hella faster than before. I love a good upgrade. Flying over the now destroyed city wall separating, I sucked it up and every other building in the marshland that was gone. One half of the city is done, now on to the other half.
In a streak of white and pink I scoured Cyran city and took everything not nailed down until 75% was gone. So much open space. I could feel the decorating ideas in my head forming but right now we had bigger fish to fry.
“Ready?” Wyatt asked, teleporting back over to me with Guy on his arm.
“As I’ll ever be.” I stood in between the men of my life, briefly squeezing their hands as I charged forward. Wyatt teleported Guy right in front of Rupert's eye, sending a devastating punch. It must have been hurting like a bitch because Rupert closed his one eye and roared, staggering back.
I soared above his head and aimed my mouth down, as Wyatt held my hand. Power and warmth, different than with Guy but still familiar, coursed through us. It made me hungry for…more power, obviously. And sex. Priorities.
“Go!” Wyatt yelled.
All I had to do was open my mouth. Purification Breath happened. But instead of a weak blast of air, this time it was like a tornado of debris and white sparkles covered Rupert.
Wyatt, my ride or die, teleported me all around him. My tornado of cuteness covered him from every angle, catching his weakness finally. With a roar, he came down, green scales falling like petals to the empty streets below. I caught Rupert’s falling body, unconscious but still alive, thank the goddess.
His necklace fell off as we hit the ground. I hadn’t realized it was a scent blocker. The moment I smelled him, nostalgia and longing for my baby boy hit me like a freight train. And to make matters worse, his appearance changed, as if the scentblocker was also cloaking his true form.
Rupert's hair was pink with a strip of white…a very familiar white.
“No…no, it can’t be!” I whispered, covering the sob ripping from my throat.
I lifted his shirt, checking his chest. And I wailed when I saw my worst nightmare: a birth mark shaped like a claw.
My baby boy. What have we done to you?
