Faye Yardley wasn’t the type to get involved in other people’s business, so after a brief thought, she let it go.
But it was impossible to say she wasn’t the least bit curious.
’Leah Chandler is very good at weighing pros and cons. What caught her interest couldn’t possibly be Logan Langdon himself, could it?’
’A more plausible explanation was that Logan Langdon had something valuable, and something that could be given to others.’
’What could it be?’
She pondered for a moment but couldn’t come up with anything, so she simply put it out of her mind.
In their small group chat, Kyle Lewis tagged her and asked, "Yardley, can I visit your island for a look? If it’s okay, I’d like to film some of the basic living conditions to make my mom give up on her idea."
Faye Yardley agreed. "Sure. Wait a minute, I’ll share a contact with you. If he’s still on the island, I’ll have him give you a tour."
"Thanks, Yardley," Kyle Lewis replied.
Having agreed, Faye Yardley called Shawn Lawler.
She told him to add Kyle Lewis, return to his raft to send an invitation, and then just give him a quick tour of the village—nothing more.
As she spoke, she set up a designated trade for him: a one-hour Invitation Card that he could retrieve once he returned to his raft.
Faye Yardley had no intention of seeking out Leah Chandler, so she was surprised when Leah herself called.
Once the call connected, she asked, "Ms. Chandler, what brings you to call me today? How have you been?"
Leah Chandler looked slightly weary, but her spirits seemed decent enough. She managed a smile and said, "Yardley, did Kyle get in touch with you?"
Faye Yardley hummed in affirmation. "Kyle said he wanted to visit my island for a bit. I already told him yes."
Faye could tell Leah Chandler let out a sigh of relief. Then, she said, "By the way, Yardley, I was wondering if you had any interest in going back to the Isle of Damnation?"
Faye Yardley shook her head, her refusal crisp and direct. "Sorry, Ms. Chandler. That place gives me a bad feeling. I don’t want to go back."
"Are you sure?" Seeing her firm stance, Leah Chandler sounded a little disappointed. "That’s a real shame. It just won’t be the same without you."
"I’m sure it’ll be fine. Since you’re always able to get an Island Entry Order for the Isle of Damnation, Ms. Chandler, it must mean that place is fated for you."
After they exchanged a few more words, Leah Chandler’s expression suddenly turned grave, as if she’d made a momentous decision. She spoke with a new, sincere earnestness, "Yardley, out here in this vast sea, I don’t have many people I can trust. Of all the people we’ve met, you’re the only one whose character both my son and I can vouch for. So, I was hoping... if something were to happen to me, could I trouble you to look after Kyle a little, as much as you’re able?"
She clearly didn’t expect Faye Yardley to help for free, as she quickly sent over a Gift.
"What’s in this Gift is just a small token of my appreciation. Please, take it. Otherwise, I’d be too embarrassed to even ask."
Even if Leah Chandler hadn’t said a word, Faye would have helped Kyle Lewis if he asked and she was able. Because of this, she accepted the Gift without hesitation.
Pleased, Leah Chandler sent another Gift. "This one is for Kyle. If my name ever disappears from your friends list, please give this to him."
"Alright."
With that taken care of, Leah Chandler said her goodbyes.
After hanging up, Faye Yardley accepted the Gift that Leah Chandler had left for Kyle Lewis and stored it in an empty room on one of the lower levels.
Only then did she examine what Leah Chandler had given her.
An Island Dock Construction Blueprint, an Island Hydroelectric Power Plant Construction Blueprint, and 10 Winter Evergreen Tree seedlings.
A system appraisal confirmed there was nothing wrong with the seedlings. Faye Yardley listed eight of them in a designated trade for Shawn Lawler. She called him and told him to give them to Mayor Thorne, with instructions to plant one at the hospital and the rest near the laboratory.
After all, the fruit of the Winter Evergreen Tree had a calming effect on one’s mind and energy, so the tree itself and its flowers should have a similar property.
She gave the remaining two saplings to Eamon to plant in the cultivation room. This particular type of plant could enhance Eamon’s abilities.
As for the two blueprints, her island didn’t need them at the moment.
Faye Yardley called Jay Jonas.
He picked up quickly, but she could tell he was busy.
"Yardley, what can I do for you?"
It was rare for Faye Yardley to contact him directly; she usually went through his cousin, Eleanor Jonas, or Zachary Pierce.
Faye Yardley got straight to the point. "Is the dock on your island built yet?"
Jay Jonas shook his head. "Not yet. We haven’t found a blueprint for one, and building it with sheer manpower would take who-knows-how-long. You’re asking because you have a spare dock blueprint, aren’t you?"
"Mhm, I do."
Jay Jonas’s voice filled with delight. "Yardley, I knew you were a person of exceptional character..."
"Stop," she cut in. "I’m not giving it to you for free, so spare me the flattery. Otherwise, I’ll just go talk to Mr. Pierce."
"Hey now, listen to yourself. I’m not a freeloader. Just tell me what you want. If I have it, it’s yours."
Faye Yardley wanted to trade for more skilled personnel, whether they were in scientific research or were combat-proficient fighters.
She even needed police officers experienced in criminal investigation to maintain public order.
She couldn’t possibly vet people like that on her own.
So it was safest to entrust this task to them.
Besides, since Jay Jonas was the one who needed these things, there was no point going through Zachary Pierce.
Plus, once the event was over, her other two residential complexes would be complete, so she would have no problem housing another batch of people.
With more people, she’d also need folks skilled at mediating interpersonal disputes, like the ones who served on neighborhood committees.
When she thought about it, there wasn’t really anything she personally needed.
Jay Jonas asked, "I can get you people, but would you mind if they’re a bit older? Those over forty with families are more likely to want stability. The younger folks in their twenties and thirties might be more inclined to strike out on their own."
Faye Yardley replied immediately, "I don’t mind at all. More mature is better. They can take on apprentices once they’re on the island. By the way, Mr. Jonas, I wanted to ask if you have any special methods for raising one’s physical Attributes."
"Are you stuck at a promotion threshold?" Jay Jonas asked, then paused, stunned. A moment later he just blurted out, "Holy shit!" He gave Faye Yardley a thumbs-up through the screen. "Yardley, you’re incredible! Truly worthy of being number one on Veridia’s combat power rankings. You’re about to break through to Tier Four, aren’t you?"
"I am. Is there a method?"
Jay Jonas didn’t beat around the bush. "There is a method, but the ’extreme stimulation’ technique might not be effective for you. We generally only use it for the breakthrough from First Tier to Second Tier. Your Attributes are too high; we have no precedent for success at your level. How about you wait until the event is over and come try it out?"
"Why wait until the event is over? Can’t I do it now?"
The words were barely out of her mouth when understanding dawned on Faye Yardley. "Oh," she said. "Right, I get it. We’ll wait until after the event, then. Don’t you forget, Mr. Jonas!"
"Don’t worry. I’ll go talk to the relevant people in a bit and have them make the necessary preparations in advance."
