"Kalon, what do you gain from this?"

Kalon left the palace after his meeting, with Josinia following closely behind him.

The entire palace was already filled with chatter, and so were the streets outside. Everyone was talking about the challenge that Glorian had given to the human.

They placed bets on who they thought would win.

They debated the reasoning behind why they made such bets.

They wondered how this would affect the empire going forward.

Everyone was aware of the human’s capabilities. However, Glorian was a master with the sword and also neutral skills.

He was once the right-hand man of the emperor himself, and many would say that he was the strongest fighter on the planet.

There was a reason why he was now commander of the resistance army.

Were the feats of this human enough to stand up against him?

"It’s not about what I gain, Josi. He challenged me, didn’t he?"

Josinia paused for a few moments.

"Yes... he did."

"And what type of man would I be to turn down the challenge? If I did, word could spread to the empire, boosting their confidence once again and leading to them attacking the resistance again."

She had no response to that because it was a very well-thought-out point.

Kalon was the reason for their safety. If he showed weakness, it could lead to the collapse of the resistance.

No matter how much she disliked the idea of the two men fighting to the death, she had to accept it.

"If you are about to die, I am going to jump in and save you."

"What do you mean?" Kalon responded.

"I mean that I would rather make myself an enemy of the resistance and run away with you than lose you."

Those heartfelt words struck Kalon and made him stay silent for a few moments.

Josinia continued.

"Look, if it wasn’t for you, then I would never be here. I would still be stuck in the empire, working as a maid for an empire whose beliefs went against mine. If you are not with me here, then..."

She didn’t need to finish her sentence.

Kalon considered her words for a moment.

He was starting to figure out just how deep the connection he had was with the first alien he met. After all, there was a reason why she was at Seduction Stage Seven.

She was also the woman who had taken his virginity.

His first lover.

Kalon stopped and turned to face her. Afterwards, he used his hand to stroke her purple-skinned cheek, making it blush brighter.

It was in public, so a few people saw this and whispered amongst themselves.

"W-what are you doing so suddenly..."

Kalon showed her a warm smile.

"Don’t worry about making yourself an enemy of the resistance. It won’t happen because Glorian doesn’t have a chance of beating me in combat."

...

Two hours later, once the sun had set...

Kalon arrived at the city centre, which was packed with a crowd of at least two hundred Vendurions.

It reminded him of a small-scale arena.

They had created a circle, and within it were all sorts of people. Maids, nobles, guards, it felt like all the important people of the resistance were there, except for Princess Unestia.

She had no desire to watch the death match and decided to remain at her palace.

When Kalon arrived at the circle, they slowly made way for him, leading him to the centre.

There was Glorian, dressed in nothing but flowing brown pants, with his upper body naked. His torso was well-built and scarred. He rested on the hilt of his longsword, which he had managed to stab into the concrete.

As for Kalon, he had no weapon. He removed his shirt as he stepped into the circle, so that he, too, was only wearing his pants and boots.

Glorian furrowed a brow at him as he approached, and the circle closed around them noisily.

"You understand that this is a fight to the death? You are a fool to bring no weapon," Glorian said from across the makeshift arena.

Kalon shrugged his shoulders.

"I do not need one."

Right after he finished the sentence, Glorian pulled his longsword from the concrete with a metallic ring. The blade was covered in a completely white sheen of aura.

Then, he charged, and everyone gasped.

Glorian had no intentions of dragging out this fight. He knew that he was capable of ending it in one swing due to his agility and strength, so that was what he would do.

However, as soon as he started charging, he noticed something.

His body slowed down tremendously due to the effect of Deep Sea Pressure. Not only that, but his other attributes dropped further because of Kalon’s title, Bully Breaker.

Immediately, his confidence in up-close combat fell.

The debuff was so strong that Glorian immediately stopped his charge. He decided that he would attack from range, utilising his neutral skills instead.

Glorian slashed the air twice in an X shape. A floating white X had formed in the air from the slashes, which suddenly turned red and grew five times larger.

The X then came flying across the field towards Kalon, prepared to cut his body into four pieces.

But Kalon was ready. The attack was fast, but it wasn’t unbelievably fast.

He managed to lift both hands and parry both of the slashes, successfully taking the energy of the A-Rank skill into his body.

The problem was that after that, Glorian had already started preparing another cross slash, while Kalon’s Astral Counter was on cooldown.

...

Glorian noticed the look on Kalon’s face from across the field.

He only made that face for a split second, but it was clear that it was one of worry.

He gathered that Kalon could only deflect strikes every so often. If a strike came to him during the cooldown window, it left the man near useless.

In other words, his next Cross Slash would be the end of their duel.
