Kalon and Josinia made their way through the resistance city toward the palace.
Once there, they were led straight into the main hall of the palace by a group of guards.
Princess Unestia sat on the raised stone seat at the far end, dressed in a red gown that left her shoulders bare. Her black hair fell loose down her back.
A few resistance officers stood along the walls, but the room was mostly empty.
When she saw Kalon, Unestia rose to her feet.
A rare thing for a ruler to ever do.
"You returned," she said with a faint smile. "Good. I have been waiting."
Kalon stopped a few paces from the platform and gave a short nod. Josinia stayed slightly behind him.
Unestia stepped down from the seat and stopped in front of him.
"The empire has not attacked since the day you destroyed their force outside the walls. Our scouts report they are afraid to move. That fear exists because of you. The resistance owes you more than words."
She clasped her hands in front of her.
"I would like to offer you a house of your choosing inside the city. Any building you want. It will be cleared and given to you as permanent property. A place that belongs only to you, for as long as you wish to keep it."
Kalon raised an eyebrow. He knew his importantance in the city, but he was still surprised.
"I don’t need a house here, princess. I already have a place on my own world."
"I know," Unestia replied. "But I am not asking if you need it. I am offering it as payment for what you have already done, and for what you may still do. The resistance does not forget those who protect it. Take the house. Even if you only use it when you visit."
Josinia glanced at Kalon, clearly hoping he would accept.
Unestia’s expression stayed calm, but her eyes did not leave his as she waited for his answer.
After a short silence, Kalon exhaled.
"Fine. I will take you up on your offer."
A small smile spread across Unestia’s lips.
"Good. I will have someone show you the available buildings later. Choose whichever you prefer."
Before anyone else could speak any further, the doors at the far end of the hall opened hard.
A tall Vendurion man strode in. His armour was darker than the usual resistance design, and a long sword rested at his hip.
His glossy purple skin was marked with scars. His pink eyes locked onto Kalon the moment he entered.
Princess Unestia lost her smile immediately.
"Glorian. You were not called." She said seriously.
Glorian... I’ve heard that name.
Glorian stopped several paces away and looked Kalon up and down without any attempt to hide his emotions.
"I heard the human was here, I wanted to see him myself." He spat.
One of the officers near the wall took a step forward.
"Sir Glorian, this is not the time—"
"Be quiet and know your place, guard." Glorian did not even look at the man. His attention stayed fixed on Kalon.
"Everyone in this city talks about this alien like he is some kind of saviour. They say he destroyed twenty empire knights alone. They say the empire is too afraid to attack because of him. I do not believe it."
Kalon simply stood there with an uncaring expression on his face.
Josinia’s hands curled into fists.
"He did those things. I was there for some of them." She retorted.
Glorian glanced at her once, then dismissed her.
"You are biased. You follow him around like a lost pet."
He turned back to Kalon.
"I have protected her majesty longer than you have been here, human. I have killed more empire soldiers than you have ever seen. Yet somehow a stranger from another world arrives and everyone decides he is stronger than me."
The man’s pride shone through his words.
Unestia’s voice cut through the hall.
"Glorian. That is enough. You will not disrespect a guest who has bled for this resistance."
"I will speak," Glorian replied immediately. "Someone has to.
"This human appears, fights once or twice, then disappears for days. We do not know where he goes. We do not know what he wants. Yet the princess offers him houses and the people hang pictures of him on the walls. It is foolish."
Another officer tried to intervene.
"Sir, the empire has not moved since his last battle. That alone proves his value."
Glorian ignored him too.
"I am still the strongest warrior in this city. Not him." He pointed at Kalon. "If he is truly as powerful as everyone claims, then he should have no problem proving it."
The hall went silent as they took in the implications of the man’s words.
Glorian rested his hand on the hilt of his longsword.
"I challenge you to a duel, human. To the death. Here in the city. In front of everyone. If you refuse, then every person who calls you a hero will know you are only strong when the enemy is weak and unprepared."
Josinia stepped forward immediately.
"That is insane. You cannot—"
"I accept."
Kalon’s voice was calm and clear.
Everyone turned to look at him. Unestia’s eyes widened slightly. Glorian’s mouth curled into a smile.
A smile that said I have won.
"Good," the knight said. "I was hoping you would not hide."
Unestia moved between them, not wishing to see this go any further. She had no intentions of losing any of her men.
"There will be no duel to the death inside my city. I forbid it."
Glorian kept his eyes on Kalon, ignoring his princess.
"Then the human can admit he is not what the people believe. Or he can meet me anyway. The choice is already made."
Kalon met the knight’s stare without flinching. He already had his answer.
A duel to the death was the same as a professional bout.
He would simply see it as preparation, and a way to test his skills.
"I said I accept. Pick the time and the place."
"Sunset at the city centre. No armour or interference. We fight until one of us stops breathing."
He turned and walked out of the hall without waiting for permission. The doors closed hard behind him.
Silence settled over the room again.
Josinia looked at Kalon with clear worry on her face.
"You did not have to accept. He has been the strongest knight in the resistance for years!"
Kalon glanced at her, then at Princess Unestia, who was still watching him with a complicated expression.
Despite knowing Kalon’s capabilities, they would all be stupid to underestimate Glorian, one of the greatest fighters of the resistance.
"I know," kalon said. "That’s why I accepted."
Unestia studied him for a long moment, hesitating and clearly enraged. Then she calmed down enough to speak quietly.
"If you die, the empire will return the next day. You understand that..."
"I do."
She held his gaze a second longer, then nodded once.
"Then survive."
