Kalon sat in the large stone bathtub of the Bluegale house, hot water rising around him up to his chest.

The deep cuts from Glorian’s Cross Slash still burned deep inside him, but the contents of the water and the natural recovery of his body were already closing them.

Pink-tinted water swirled around the wounds as blood slowly stopped flowing. It didn’t take long for him to heal at all.

He leaned his head back against the stone edge and closed his eyes.

The fight replayed in his mind. The red X slamming into his chest. The pain. The moment he decided to take the hit on purpose.

Then Photon Slash, the giant blade of light forming along his hand and cutting clean through Glorian’s leg.

He had won; however, he had also come closer to dying than he felt comfortable with.

As the water continued to work on his body, Kalon felt something else deep inside of him. He had felt it ever since he had bested Glorian in combat.

It was a pressure in his core. It felt like something was telling him that he was finally ready to advance to the rank.

He reached into his trousers pocket and found the Gold Pill he had received as a reward on Cryos. Until now, his body had rejected the idea of consuming it. Although he had been High Silver, it still needed time.

Now he knew he was ready.

Kalon looked at the pill. It was a small, heavy sphere of compressed gold light that looked invaluable. He stared at it for a second, then put it in his mouth and swallowed.

The effect was immediate.

Heat exploded through his entire body. It started in his stomach and raced outward through every vein and muscle. His back arched hard against the stone. The water around him began to tremble. The remaining open wounds on his chest sealed shut in seconds, the skin knitting together with insane speed until only faint lines remained.

And yet his bodily changes did not stop there.

His bones now felt denser. His muscles tightened and expanded at the same time, adding new strength onto it without actually growing in size. His skin grew tougher.

Even his senses sharpened. The sound of rain outside became clearer, the temperature of the water was more precise, the faint scent of soap and stone was now more distinct.

Kalon’s breathing became faster. He gripped the edges of the tub as wave after wave of power settled into him that was hard to control.

She wore the same thin white robe as earlier. It had loosened further while she waited, showing more of the soft upper curves of her breasts and the clean line of her stomach. Her blue eyes lifted when she heard him, and then they stopped.

She stared at him with wide eyes.

Something about him was different. She could see it immediately.

The way he carried his weight. The faint aura to his presence. It was as if the man who had walked into her house bleeding and close to collapse had been replaced by a harder, more finished version of himself.

"Kalon..." she said quietly, not wishing to wake her mother. "What happened to you?"
