Kalon looked up at the stars one last time, then selected his final destination for the day.

[You have arrived!]

[Welcome to Veylora!]

He appeared at the edge of a wide, open field.

The grass under his feet was a deep green, and the air had the smell of ripe berries and something sweet.

In the centre of the field a large group of Veylorians had gathered.

Many wore the white or black robes of the priesthood. Others were ordinary leaf-skinned villagers, their bodies marked with different patterns of vines and small growing plants.

At the front of the gathering stood Priestess Nyphara, her heavy exposed breasts naked as always, white robes open at the chest.

Beside her was the smaller disciple Yildaphia, with her thorn-afro dotted with white berries.

Her black robes were also cut to leave her small breasts uncovered.

Several other priests and priestesses stood with them, all facing a simple wooden shrine that had been raised in the middle of the field.

It was clearly a religious pilgrimage. Offerings of fruit and woven leaves had been placed at the base of the shrine.

The group spoke chants.

Kalon stayed near the edge of the crowd, watching.

A few of the Veylorians noticed him and gave calm, accepting nods, the same way they had in the cathedral. No one treated him as a stranger, unlike on other planets.

But the peaceful atmosphere lasted only another minute.

A sudden crash of breaking branches came from the trees to the east. Figures burst into the open field running at great speed.

From the frightened reactions of the Veylorians, Kalon knew exactly what these figures were.

These are Berry Hunters...

There were at least ten of them.

The moment Kalon saw their faces and bodies, he was filled with a great confusion.

They looked almost identical to humans.

They were not leaf-skinned. Not crystalline. Not purple. Their skin was the same range of tones he saw every day on Earth.

Pale, tan, dark.

They had ordinary human faces, ordinary human hands, ordinary human legs. Yet everything about them was primitive.

They wore rough hides and woven plant fibres.

Their hair was matted and wild.

They carried poorly made stone-tipped spears, wooden clubs, and nets made from thick vines.

Some had painted their skin with dark berry juice in scary patterns.

They looked like humans from a time before cities, before systems, before anything Kalon recognised as civilisation.

Why are there humans on Veylora?

A hundred questions entered his mind, and yet he had no answer.

The Berry Hunters gave the pilgrims no time to react. They charged straight toward the shrine, shouting in a rough language, making noises that even Kalon couldn’t understand with his language converter skill.

They threw spears and nets through the air.

The Veylorians scattered, some trying to shield the younger disciples.

Nyphara raised her arms and vines erupted from the ground in defence, but there were too many attackers and they were too close.

So, Kalon moved.

He had already used Crown of Heaven, so he could not benefit from its speed boost. However, his speed currently sat at a higher rank due to Daily Blessing.

He activated Photon Slash.

A massive blade of pure, concentrated light erupted from his palm, ten metres long and roaring with power. The air itself hummed. He swung once in a wide horizontal arc.

The light blade passed through the first three Berry Hunters without slowing down. Their bodies separated cleanly at the waist. Upper halves toppled one way, and their legs the other way.

There was almost no blood. The heat of the slash had seared the wounds shut in the same instant it cut.

There was also a giant golden line left where the strike hit. Any Berry Hunters that ran through it would be vapourised.

Kalon stepped forward and swung again.

Two more Hunters were cleaved from shoulder to hip. A sixth lost both legs at the thigh and collapsed screaming.

The remaining attackers tried to turn their spears toward him, but the giant blade of light flashed a third time. Another pair fell in pieces.

The last few Berry Hunters broke away and tried to run back toward the trees.

Kalon did not let them.

One final, precise slash took the closest two. Their faces were cleaved in half, splitting them directly down between the eyes.

The rest vanished into the trees, leaving their dead and dying behind.

There were no sounds of painful groans in the field, as they had all fallen dead immediately. All that could be heard was the gentle crying of younger Veylorians.

"It’s okay, children... we are safe." An older priest calmed them down.

The massive blade of light faded from Kalon’s hand, but residual light essence still floated in the air like golden dust. It drifted across the grass and settled over the gathered Veylorians.

The effect was immediate.

Nyphara’s eyes widened. A soft sound left her throat as the leftover light sank into her leaf-skin. Her heavy breasts rose as she took in a deep breath; thin nectar began to bead along their surfaces.

Yildaphia staggered, and her small breasts blushed a darker green. Her thighs pressed together as the photosynthetic reaction took her.

Several other priests and villagers swayed on their feet, skin glowing faintly, soft gasps and shivers moving through the group as the residual light fed into their bodies.

Some of them had to fall to their knees, overwhelmed by the sudden, unexpected pleasure.

Kalon stood in the middle of the fallen Berry Hunters, out of breath, and stared down at the nearest corpse.

Human face. Human hands. Human shape.

They should not have existed here.

He looked from the bodies to the still-trembling pilgrims, many of them blushing and wet with nectar from the leftover radiance of his skill.

Then he looked back to the human-like corpses on the grass.

Despite his victory, and the progress he felt himself making through the low gold rank, he was still confused.

Why did the Berry Hunters of Veylora look like humans from Earth’s distant past?
