Kalon kneeled down by the corpses of the Berry Hunters, examining them closely.

It was hard, since most of them had been severely injured. However, some were left only with half of their faces missing.

It was easier for him to examine their bodies.

He looked over the details of their anatomy and biology, taking in what he could understand. As a nerd, he was decent with these sort of things.

By the time he was done, he had come to a conclusion.

They are exactly like humans, except for two small differences...

The first difference was the fact that they had heavy, protruding eyebrows and thicker, denser bones throughout the skull and limbs.

Their arms were slightly longer in proportion to their bodies, and their ribcages were broader and more barrel-shaped.

These were not the proportions of modern humans. They were closer to the bodies of Neanderthals he had seen in textbooks on Earth.

The second difference was smaller, but far stranger.

Behind each of their ears, almost hidden by their hair, was a glowing mark. It was roughly the size of a coin and gave off a faint blue light after they had died.

When Kalon brushed the hair aside on one corpse, he saw that the mark was not a tattoo. There were thin lines of something metallic running under the skin.

It looked like an implant or device had been embedded there long ago and had grown into the flesh.

Body modifications? This must be advanced technology.

Kalon stood up slowly, still staring at the nearest glowing mark.

Footsteps approached through the grass.

Priestess Nyphara and Disciple Yildaphia walked toward him, followed at a short distance by several other pilgrims who still looked scared.

Thin trails of nectar still covered Nyphara’s heavy breasts and Yildaphia’s smaller ones from the residual light of Photon Slash.

Both women stopped a few steps away and bowed their heads.

"Light Bringer," Nyphara said, her voice calm despite the earlier chaos. "You have saved us once again. The Mother Tree’s blessing travels with you. We offer our deepest thanks."

Yildaphia nodded quickly, thorn-afro shifting.

"If you had not been here... many of us would have been taken." She added.

Kalon turned away from the corpses and faced them.

"I’m just glad I arrived when I did. You don’t need to thank me so formally."

Nyphara smiled the same warm smile she always wore.

"Gratitude is never wasted. Will you come with us? Night is approaching, and it is not safe to remain in the open field after an attack. We have a camp nearby. There we can speak properly."

Kalon glanced once more at the glowing marks behind the dead Hunters’ ears, then nodded.

"Lead the way. And while we’re there, I want to know everything you can tell me about these Berry Hunters."

"Of course," Nyphara replied. "We will tell you what we know."

The group gathered the wounded and the offerings that could still be salvaged, then left the field.

Kalon walked near the front with the two priestesses.

The journey was short. After only a few minutes the leaf-camp came into view.

It was larger than he expected. Dozens of tents and simple shelters had been created entirely from leaves and vines.

Soft green light glowed from moss lanterns.

There was an open space with campfires at the center.

The pilgrims began tending to injuries, securing the perimeter, and preparing food.

Nyphara guided Kalon to a seat beside the largest fire. Yildaphia brought a carved wooden cup filled with warm leaf tea and placed it in his hands.

The liquid smelled herbal and slightly sweet. He took a sip while the two women sat across from him.

"The Berry Hunters are not from this world," she started to explain. "That is the first truth we know. They appear from the deep forest without warning, always in groups, always seeking to capture rather than simply kill. They take the living when they can, especially those of us with healthy fruit. Religious people, to be exact."

Yildaphia added softly afterwards,.

"They speak a language none of us understand. We have tried for generations to communicate, but there is never any response that makes sense. Only shouting and violence."

Nyphara continued.

"Our oldest records say they first appeared many years ago, after a great shaking in the northern forests. Some of the elders believe they fell from the sky. Others say the Mother Tree herself rejected them and forced them into the wild places. What we know for certain is that they do not age the way we do, they do not grow plants from their bodies, and they cannot hear the Mother Tree’s voice. They are outside her design."

She looked into the fire.

"They harvest berries that grow on our people by force. They dry them, crush them, and use the powder for strength and madness in battle. That is why they hunt us. To them we are both enemy and a source of food."

"And when they harvest our fruit, we die."

Kalon listened in silence.

A different world. A language no one on Veylora understood. Bodies that looked like ancient humans. Implants that glowed with unnatural light.

In his mind the pieces arranged themselves into a single uncomfortable possibility.

They might not just be from a different region of this planet. They might be from a different planet entirely.

Could it be a planet that discovered space travel?

But then what is their goal?

He kept the thought to himself for now.

The conversation continued a while longer.

Nyphara and Yildaphia answered what questions they could, though much of the Berry Hunters’ true origin remained unknown even to the priesthood.

Eventually the fire burned lower and the camp grew quieter as pilgrims finished their tasks.

Nyphara rose to her feet and raised her voice so the nearby tents could hear.

"The danger has passed for tonight. Everyone should return to their shelters and rest. We move again at first light to return to our city."

Replies came from the surrounding leaf-tents.

People began to disappear into their tents one by one. Yildaphia gave Kalon a small bow and went to her own tent.

Nyphara remained by the fire a moment longer. When most of the camp had settled, she turned back to Kalon.

The warm light of the flames moved across her bare, heavy breasts and her beautiful green face.

"Light Bringer, before I sleep... could you grant me light once more? The residual light from your attack earlier has made me feel selfish... Please feel free to refuse."

There was no shame on her face as she waited for his answer.
