"Please don’t, you will draw attention!"

A low, feminine voice stopped Kalon from using using Ninefold Sunbreaker to decimate the two cloaked figures in front of him.

The next thing he knew, everyone around him dissapeared.

It was as though he had been enveloped by a world of complete darkness and shadows.

Everything became black and white.

The grass. The trees. The skies.

And the only things that existed in this strange world of shadows was Kalon and the two figures.

They stood before him now and both dropped their hoods.

Kalon’s eyes widened at the sight of them. That was because he recognised them both.

The male was dark skinned with a shaved bald head, and a diagonal scar running from his eyebrows down to his chin. His face was hard, and he looked even more frightening than the dragons themselves.

The second was a caramel skinned beautiful. Her black hair was curly, reaching her shoulders, and her lips were plump and soft, like her cheeks. She had a more delicate look to her, though her black eyes were piercing.

As for who they were...

"Jeremiah Redsea... Larissa Montague..." Kalon’s words trailed off.

He knew this pair well. This was because they were two of the greatest fighters in the United States, a country far, far away from the United Kingdom.

Kalon blinked a few times in disbelief. Just what were such people doing here? What did they want with him?

Larissa smiled at Kalon.

"We’ve been watching you, Kalon Manchester."

"We’ve been watching everyone. It is our job, after all." Jeremiah added.

This pair was from the Shadowed Organisation. A group that specialised in the affinity to darkness and death.

They were known for travelling across the world to scout out professionals who made a name for themselves, but were unhappy with the contracts they found themselves bound to.

Then, they would use arguable-legal means to help the fighter transfer countries and escape their contracts, as long as they agreed to join the shadows.

However, there was two things to keep note of.

The Shadows only recruited well know pros, and those with affinites to at least one of their required elements.

Kalon was neither.

"Why have you come to me?" He asked, sceptical.

Larissa’s smile did not fade. Jeremiah’s expression stayed unreadable.

"Because you are not normal," Larissa said. "And the Ten Dragons have already noticed."

Kalon kept his stance ready. The black-and-white shadow world around them remained completely still. No sound from the real City Square reached him.

"I don’t have darkness or death affinity," he said. "Your organisation doesn’t recruit people like me."

"Normally, no," Jeremiah answered. His voice was deep. "We do not approach first-year students. You are the exception."

Larissa took one step closer. The pale shadow-light made her caramel skin and sharp black eyes stand out clearly.

"We have been tracking the Ten Dragons for three years. Ever since the First Dragon vanished. She has went missing, and we believe the other dragons have a part in it."

"And she’s not the first either. Many other awakened who have been offered a contract from the Ten Dragons have seemed to fall off the face of the world."

Kalon’s eyes narrowed.

Now that he thought about it, wasn’t it true?

It’s not like he was the first person to be invited to the Ten Dragons headquarters.

Just what happened to the others?

"You’re saying the contract is a trap." He said.

"We are saying you should not sign it until you understand what they actually want," Jeremiah said.

"What you did in there today has made them interested in you."

Larissa’s voice softened slightly as she continued.

"We do not know exactly what the Ten Dragons are doing with the people they sponsor. We only know that the First Dragon was their first victim. You are the first person in a long time who looks strong enough, and strange enough, to survive long enough to find out."

The shadow world felt colder.

Kalon processed the information in silence. The contract sitting in his system interface suddenly looked different.

Twenty thousand a month. Training facilities. Upgrade pills. All of it could be bait.

The missing First Dragon. The pattern of talented fighters who were invited to the headquarters and then vanished. The way the nine current Dragons had stared at Ninefold Sunbreaker like they had been waiting for something exactly like it.

The Fire Swallow skill...

"What do you want from me?" he asked.

"For now, only that you do not accept the contract tomorrow," Larissa said.

"If you still want to sign after that, we will not stop you. But if you decide the risk is too high, the Shadowed Organisation can offer protection and information the Ten Dragons will never give you."

Jeremiah folded his arms.

"We are not asking you to join us tonight. We are telling you that the path they are offering has dangers. You deserve to know that before you walk further down it."

The black-and-white world began to fracture at the edges. Colour started returning in thin cracks. The real City Square was bleeding back in.

Larissa met Kalon’s eyes one last time.

"We will contact you again before the Duo Tournament. Decide carefully, Kalon Manchester. The Ten Dragons did not invite you because they admire your powers. They invited you because they want it for themselves."

The shadow domain collapsed.

Sound and colour returned back into place. People walked past as if nothing had happened. The fountain continued its steady flow.

Jeremiah and Larissa were already gone, and they had left no signs of themselves.

Kalon stood alone in the middle of City Square with the Ten Dragons contract still waiting unanswered in his system and a new, far more dangerous picture of Earth forming in his mind.

It seemed that some of the organisations who he once believed were just interested in the entertainment industry, were actually much more sinister.

He took in a deep breathe and let it out.

I think I’m really starting to prefer space over my own planets...
