24 hours later...
...
"I would like to announce the commencement of the annual Summoners Tournament!"
An echoed voice bellowed through the entire capital city of Cryos for everyone watching from their homes to hear.
Numerous ice crystal screens had erupted, giving a display of all the places where battles commonly happened.
And spread across the city were one hundred summoners, waiting in raised pods where they would safely call their summons from.
As Kalon had requested, Sifa’s pod was located by the marketplace, where the strongest fighters would be.
From her raised pod, she saw at least ten others in the same place as her.
They were some of the strongest summoners she had seen, hoping for their summons to gain some experience at the centre of the battlefield.
Qyriun, the eldest son of Governor Qyra, the ruler of Cryos.
Iyrak, a third-year student of the Summoners Academy, known for his summon’s brutality.
Jessina, the most talented summoner in Sifa’s year group.
And much more.
The only well-known entrant who had chosen not to start at the chaotic centre of the city was Headmaster Runa, the one in charge of the Summoners Academy itself.
It was her first time entering this year, and everyone found it unfair.
As headmaster, she was likely to know the strengths and weaknesses of any student’s summon, which prevented most students from entering.
Not Sifa, though, since the headmaster was not fully aware of Kalon’s existence.
Besides, the woman was nowhere to be seen anyway.
"Prepare your summons!"
This was the moment where Sifa was most worried.
There were very few times where she was able to summon Kalon at will. Most times, the man appeared whenever he wanted.
The only time it had worked was when she first ever summoned him.
She hoped things would be the same now.
"Great creature of the outer worlds... I summon you!"
These words left the mouths of one hundred different contestants from all across the city.
As Sifa spoke them, nothing happened at first.
Meanwhile, ahead of her in the marketplace, there were multiple creatures being summoned and landing on the ground.
There were creatures of all kinds.
Ice bears, Ice Wraiths, even an Ice Mammoth.
However, there was no sign of Kalon anywhere for at least ten seconds. She heard the sounds of summons roaring and felt the eyes of the summoners on her as they noticed she had yet to call forth hers.
She had a feeling that the announcer was just about to call out to her, but then...
Kalon appeared on the ground just beneath her raised pod.
He stood there, dressed in a white wooden garment, with black pants leading down to boots.
His hands rested in his pockets casually.
A smile spread across Sifa’s face, and her body relaxed, only for it to tense up again a few seconds later when the announcer spoke once more.
"The one-minute grace period starts now! Summons, feel free to prepare or relocate yourselves. Once the minute is over, battle will commence!"
...
Kalon stood there in the marketplace centre, looking around at the creatures ahead of him.
As a shorter-than-average man, he always felt small wherever he was.
Now, however, he felt truly tiny.
The creatures inhabiting the marketplace centre with him were all ferocious and large.
The bear was at least double his size, with fangs and claws made from icicles.
An Ice Wraith, which moved around like a frosty spirit, was the size of a cathedral double-door set.
And the Mammoth, which was the most ferocious-looking of all, was the size of a small house. It looked around at the numerous creatures, blowing air from its snout. Its long tusks were made from icicles.
When the other creatures caught sight of the beast, half of them left.
It was clear that this was, at bare minimum, an A-Rank summon.
...
By the time the grace period ended, there were only four creatures remaining at the centre.
The Ice Mammoth.
The Ice Wraith.
The Ice Bear.
And Kalon Manchester.
"Begin!"
The announcer’s voice rang out, and one of the summons immediately shot forward.
The Ice Bear. It was heading straight towards the Mammoth.
Kalon and the Ice Wraith held their positions as they waited for the two summons to clash.
As the bear approached, the Mammoth slowly started charging towards it to meet it at the centre.
And then...
The sound of a wet squelch, followed by the shattering sound of ice and the roar of an animal, sounded throughout the marketplace.
The bear had been skewered on the Mammoth’s tusks and lifted into the air like it was nothing but an insect.
Its body began to crack and leak crystal liquid onto the floor as the Mammoth chucked its head, sending the giant bear flying into the sky before it landed directly in the Mammoth’s mouth.
A great crunch could be heard as the giant Mammoth chomped down on the bear, slowly devouring it.
What the fuck...
Kalon looked back at where the Ice Wraith was standing, only to see that it was now fleeing deeper into the city after witnessing the scene.
That left Kalon standing alone, facing off with the ferocious Mammoth.
By the time it had finished devouring the bear, the Mammoth turned its attention towards who it believed to be its next prey.
The small human, Kalon.
It blew wind from its nostrils aggressively and turned to face him, ready to charge.
Its tusks suddenly began to glow with a blue icy essence as it applied some sort of skill to the sharp, long piercers.
Any spectators who were watching at the time had looks of anticipation and fear on their faces.
They were almost frightened for the tiny summon and what would happen to it.
But Kalon didn’t let any of this bother him.
He blocked out the sounds of violent combat taking place all throughout the city and focused inwardly.
Suddenly, nine blazing suns began orbiting around him, each carrying enough heat to melt even the strongest of beings that existed on Cryos.
Ninefold Sunbreaker.
And at the same time the skill was activated, the Mammoth charged.
