The sounds of footsteps rumbling shook the entire floor of the marketplace, making it hard for Kalon to keep his balance.
Luckily, balance wasn’t needed.
He had no plans on fighting up close and personal, otherwise he would be screwed.
All he needed to do was blast down the beast while keeping enough suns surrounding him to use in any other upcoming fights.
Kalon focused on one of the suns, singling it out from the eight others.
He became momentarily distracted by a great roar that came from somewhere in the distance of the city, but ignored it.
His fight was in front of him.
Whoosh!
He shot the blazing sphere of fire towards the charging Mammoth and watched as it flew towards it like a cannonball.
Being an egotistical creature that believed it was the strongest on the field, it did not slow down or bother dodging the incoming attack.
It simply ducked its head and planned to ram through it.
It was a foolish idea.
The sun struck the Mammoth dead centre in the chest.
There was no resistance.
Fire exploded outward in a violent burst of gold and orange. It was so great that the world around it began to melt in certain places.
It created a great light that obscured him from seeing anything for a few seconds. Once it faded, the results of the attack were in front of him.
Half of the creature’s massive body simply ceased to exist. The entire front and left side melted away in an instant, turning from solid ice into a cascading flood of water and steam.
The remaining half of its body staggered forward two steps on ruined legs before collapsing in a heap of rapidly dissolving crystal and slush.
The Mammoth was dead before it even hit the ground.
This was a creature known for its incredible durability, and yet the power of a single sun had been more than enough.
Against pure ice, Ninefold Sunbreaker’s fire was simply overwhelming.
It was why Kalon knew that this battle was his to win.
...
Far from the marketplace, in a small ice-brick house on the outer edge of the capital, a family of four sat frozen in front of their crystal viewing screen.
The father gripped the arms of his chair so hard the ice cracked under his fingers.
The mother had both hands pressed over her mouth.
Their two children stared with wide, terrified eyes as the replay showed the golden-orange sun punching through the Mammoth and turning half its body into steaming water.
"That... that was fire," the father whispered. "Real fire. It actually exists."
The mother shook her head slowly, still staring at the screen.
"It can’t be... It was supposed to be a myth. Something from the old stories. No such thing should exist on our planet of ice."
On the screen, the Cryon-shaped summon stood calmly in the centre of the destruction, eight remaining suns still orbiting his body.
The marketplace around him was a mess of melted water and broken crystal.
"That summon is a monster," the older child said. He seemed half impressed and half frightened. "Everything it touches just... disappears."
"It kind of looks like us too..." the other child added.
The father let out a shaky sigh.
"No ice summon is going to survive against something like that. Look at what one of those suns did!"
For a moment, the room was silent except for the soft hum of the viewing crystal.
Then the camera view pulled back, showing a massive shadow sweeping across the city.
The enormous shape of a ginormous creature even larger than the Mammoth glided into frame.
Its wings were spread wide, and it was heading straight for the centre of the marketplace.
The mother’s shoulders loosened just a little. A faint smile spread across her face.
"It’s alright," she said, though her voice still trembled. "The Frozen Dragon is done cleaning up and is now heading towards the centre. Nothing survives that. Not even those cursed flames."
The father nodded slowly, his eyes locked on the approaching dragon.
"Yes... the dragon will make sure that this threat is removed from our world."
...
As Kalon stood in the marketplace, he focused inwardly on his system.
I can feel myself getting closer to High Silver... One... No, two more kills and I should advance.
After that, I’m on the pathway to Gold!
Kalon was cut off from his thoughts as he suddenly felt a great pressure weighing down on his body.
It made him sweat a little bit.
"Hmm?"
He looked up towards where the pressure was coming from.
A Frozen Dragon flew through the sky.
Its massive wings beat once, sending a wave of freezing wind across the entire marketplace.
Jagged ice armour covered its body from snout to tail. It looked sharp and impenetrable. Not only that, but the beast was far larger than the Mammoth.
A dragon... seriously, a dragon?!
Its bright blue eyes locked onto Kalon with pure killing intent.
Then the dragon opened its jaws wide.
A flurry of razor-sharp icicles erupted from its mouth, hundreds of them, each one as long as a spear and flying faster than arrows.
The air filled with the sound of cracking ice as the deadly barrage flew toward Kalon.
However, he did not move from his spot.
He remained as calm as he could be.
One of the eight suns orbiting his body shot upward to meet the attack, just as he willed it to.
The golden orb expanded slightly and detonated in the middle of the icicle storm.
A violent explosion of fire and steam was created in the sky. The icicles that struck the blast simply ceased to exist, melting into harmless water droplets before they could reach the ground like raindrops.
The rest were blown off course, shattering against the marketplace floor in a rain of broken crystal.
The Frozen Dragon flew through the fire and steam, continuing to head towards its prey.
Its body was already suffering. The intense heat from the exploding sun had washed over it. Entire sections of its outer ice armour were melting, running down its chest and wings in thick streams of water.
Chunks of its frozen scales fell away as it flew, revealing smoother, weaker ice underneath.
Yet the creature did not slow down. It tucked its wings and dove straight through the fading fire, jaws open, aiming to crush Kalon under its great size.
Kalon watched it come. The seven remaining suns were still spinning around him.
Then he raised his hand toward the descending monster.
