"So...?" Ambrose arched a brow when Devon was done explaining his little discussion with Viktor. "You two are just cool now?"

"Yep."

"And... okay with waiting for my decision?" It was almost too good to be true. Ambrose even glanced at Viktor but he was too busy making the burgers with Orion to notice.

"Is that suddenly so bad?" Devon chuckled. They were sitting on one of the sofas now, his arms over the backrest. Very close to Ambrose’s shoulders. "I understand you didn’t ask for any of this or even... force anything."

He paused, leaning closer to his ear. "I mean, it’s not your fault you turned out to be my permanent Guide."

’Sweet summer child.’ The words flashed past Ambrose’s head. ’If only he knew...’

His fingers curled with guilt but he didn’t let it show on his face. Instead, he smiled. "I appreciate your... patience. Especially with little Orion in the mix."

He held Devon’s hand, making the latter stiffen for a beat. Then, "You’re the best papa he could’ve ever asked for. I hope you know that."

Something tightened in Devon’s chest.

Fuck.

Now it felt even harder for him to bring up what he had found out during the past week. About Orion—the origins of his DNA and all.

Should he just bring it up now? Would Ambrose even dare to deny he didn’t know? Because it was pretty clear—

"Hope you boys are hungry," Viktor’s excited shrill voice made both men glance back. The S-Rank scurried toward the sofa, a wide plate between his hands.

And on the plate—steaming, mouth-watering burgers. Orion trailed behind him with a plate as well, his golden eyes gleaming like he couldn’t wait to dig in.

"Well," Devon sniffed once Viktor sat at Ambrose’s other side. "That smells like you’ve outdone yourself."

"You just wait." Viktor grinned from ear to ear, giving Ambrose a wink. "You want the first bite?"

Before Ambrose could utter a word, his eyes darted to the centre table. Orion had already grabbed one of the burgers and bit into it, his eyes closed like he’d just tasted heaven.

Viktor followed Ambrose’s gaze with a scolding look. "Really, little one?"

"I said I was hungry."

Slowly, Ambrose let out a stifled laugh. The others did the same, everyone grabbing a burger. Viktor went on and on about his childhood and how his mother used to make these.

It was... peaceful.

Too peaceful.

Because outside the Phoenix Flight HQ—there was already trouble brewing.

Across the road, at the opposite sidewalk facing the tall glass walls of the Guild, Han Jae-won stood calmly. He had a pair of sunglasses on, alongside a black hoodie shielding his face.

His head was lowered and his hands tucked safely in his pockets. Beside him—a woman with an even more imposing aura. Ash cashmere trench coat that blew into the wind. Long black hair. And a large black hat covering her features.

The evening sun cast dull golden rays on Aurelia City. People walked past the pair, either ignoring them or not noticing them at all.

"Well..." Hunter Han Ji-Hoon began calmly. "You’re certain he’s awake now?"

Jae-won nodded. "Positive. One of my people informed me," he swerved his head to her. "I guess that’s what he gets. Hmph. A C-Rank Guide venturing into an SS-Rank Rift. The aether pressure must’ve been too much."

His sister didn’t respond.

Not yet.

Deep down she told herself how dumb her brother’s take was. There was a reason Hunter Valentine added that simple-looking guide to the raid team.

And she was going to find out why. That and why the strands of fate acted so strangely around him.

"Very well." She spoke in Korean this time. "It’s time for phase two."

"You still haven’t told me what that will be," Jae-won murmured back. "Should we go for the little boy again? I’m telling you, the kid isn’t normal."

"The child is merely bait," Han Ji-Hoon’s mouth quivered with a smirk. "What’s the best way to force the hand of a man with secrets?"

When her brother didn’t answer, she went on. "By making him feel those secrets are under threat of being exposed." She stretched a hand to him. "Phone."

After a little hesitation, Han Jae-won handed her his phone. His sister didn’t waste a moment, going to his contact lists and finding Ambrose’s name.

"Of course you still have it saved." She snickered. A few seconds later, she drew out a very interesting video from the phone’s storage.

The CCTV footage from the Guild’s public restroom.

Pulling out a burner phone, she forwarded the message and video, proceeding to copy Ambrose’s number. Once she hit send from the burner, she dropped it, smashing it under her foot.

When she passed the phone back to Jae-won he blinked with confusion. "What... what did you send?"

"The CCTV footage from the restroom—showing him stepping out without any shots of him walking in to begin with." A pause. "Then I said I know what he is."

"And... that’s supposed to force his hand?"

"It’s supposed to make him feel watched. Unsafe." Her neck strained gently toward him. "Whatever reckless moves he makes will create a domino effect in the strands of fate... one I should theoretically be able to control."

"What if you can’t?"

"Then, dear brother," she patted his cheek once. "That’ll mean he’s not only an anomaly. But a problem. And we all know what happens to... problems..."

Their heads swung back to the Phoenix Flight building. Waiting.

Back in Ambrose’s suite, he got a notification on his phone in the middle of chewing through a burger. Viktor and Devon were too busy arguing about ingredients or whatever—so he flipped out the device with a bored expression.

It was a text.

From an... unknown number?

His forehead creased as he opened it. In the message was a video, barely audible. It was several minutes long—fast-forwarded with a rapidly moving timestamp at the side.

’Isn’t that the lobby bathroom?’ his frown only deepened.

This was taken on the day the system transported him to a pocket dimension for a special mission. The same day, Viktor came to the Guild to hand him new clothes.

Harmless at first glance.

Until you realise the footage clearly showed that Ambrose was never recorded heading into the restroom. Only leaving.

As his hands trembled, his eyes slid to the text beneath the video:

I know what you are... tell me. Do they?
