"Thanks for everything," Ambrose managed a bright smile as he hugged Viktor. The Esper was right outside the suite, about to leave. "You’ve got to share your recipes by the way. Who knew a nepo baby like you could make such good dishes?"

Viktor grinned as they broke the hug. "Oh, stop." Then he flicked his eyes to Devon before whispering. "Actually, don’t stop. I’ve got to keep rubbing it in on Mr uptight back there."

"I heard that." Devon shook his head, his arms folding in front of his chest. "Take care, Vik."

As Viktor left and Ambrose shut the door behind him—he let out a strained sigh.

Devon noticed instantly. "Hey. You okay?"

Ambrose nodded, already bringing out his phone. "Yeah, yeah... just a bit exhausted." Fortunately, a distraction came in the form of Orion.

"Papa, look! It’s that cartoon with a sea sponge again." He chirped from a sofa facing the TV.

That pulled Devon’s attention away from the Guide. "Oh—coming, buddy." He gave Ambrose one last ’I’m here if you need me ’ look before scurrying off to their son.

Ambrose made sure the Esper had sat comfortably beside Orion before opening the text from the unknown number again.

’This is bad. This is fucking bad.’ he cursed mentally. ’Who the fuck sent this? Also, if it’s just lying casually within the Guild’s CCTV database—’

[I doubt the security team would look into the footage enough to see that video, sweetness.]

’Still,’ Ambrose got to the kitchen, placing himself behind the island. ’I need to find out who sent this.’

[... So you can do what? Send them a strongly worded letter?]

’Fuck off with your dry ass AI humour.’ he was seconds away from smashing something. ’Fuck. Funny enough, I’m already having a suspect in mind.’

As he spoke, he decided to respond to the message with a text of his own. However, it was futile—even attempts to call the number were unsuccessful.

"This has to be Han," he whispered with a bitter chuckle. "Only a cowardly bastard like him can send a threat like this."

He turned away from the sight of Devon and Orion giggling at what they were watching, dropping the phone on the island. He bit his bottom lip while his mind raced in search of a solution.

"Maybe... maybe I can’t do this alone." He mumbled. "A video like this could spiral into a witch hunt fast. What if I... tell Devon—?"

"Tell me what?"

Ambrose jumped, spinning around only to meet Devon standing at the other side of the island. The S-Rank arched a confused brow, his eyes trailing from the Guide’s phone to the trembling in his silver orbs.

"D–Devon," Ambrose’s smile barely shaped. "I thought... weren’t you just—"

"Heard you talking to yourself and just had to check on you again." There was a pause before he leaned closer. "If you have anything bothering you, would it kill you to talk?"

The question made Ambrose’s chest tighten. "Nothing is bothering me."

"I don’t buy that."

"Well... It’s the truth," Ambrose avoided eye contact, attempting to walk past him as he slid his phone back into his pocket. "I just need some rest. I’m fine, don’t—"

"We need to talk." Devon dropped, looking back at Orion and making sure he wasn’t listening. Then, he added in a lower voice. "It’s important, Rose."

Ambrose’s lips thinned. He could already imagine what the ’talk’ would be about. "Viktor, right?" He rubbed the bridge of his nose. "How many times do I need to apologise for kissing him? I’m—"

"What?" Devon arched a confused brow. "Ambrose, no. Are you listening to anything I’m saying? I told you I’m not bothered by that anymore."

Oh.

Maybe he wasn’t so sure after all.

"Well," the Guide looked away. "Could it still wait?"

He was just moments away from heading for his room when Devon ceased his elbow. Ambrose jerked in shock, head swerving to the seriousness in those golden eyes.

Internally, Devon fought to push the words out of his mouth. ’Just say it—I took a DNA test and know Orion is biologically my son. And yours. It shouldn’t be hard, Devon.’

He told himself that. He really wanted to believe it shouldn’t be difficult. But—here he was...

"I–I know, Rose," those were the words that slipped out instead. Sure enough, he saw a flicker of something in the Guide’s eyes. "I have a feeling you know what I’m talking about. But I just—"

Before he knew what was happening, Ambrose broke free of his grip. He stumbled back a few steps, eyes widened with... fear?

"I–I have to go for an errand outside." He stuttered, his breath suddenly becoming shorter.

With that he ran for the living room door, leaving Devon standing there. Pondering if he’d pushed too hard.

Once Ambrose was outside his suite, he exhaled through his mouth, brushing a hand down his face. "Fuck." He cursed. "What could he have been talking about?"

[One or more of your secrets may be. But the question is—]

’Which one?’ he brought the conversation to his head as his posture straightened. Two Espers were walking down the hallway and cut him a brief look when they passed him.

The moment they were far enough, his fists balled. ’I need to get fucking stronger. More linked Espers. More aether for me to break through again...’

His mind trailed to Gabriel and Valentine.

If he managed to gain copies of their Esper abilities on top of the ones he had... he wouldn’t just be able to defend himself. He’d be close to unstoppable against the likes of Han.

[ALERT!] The system chimed suddenly with a blaring alarm. [Black dimensional key triggered. Special daily quest initiated.]

His pulse stuttered.

The... black key?

’Wait,’ his face paled. ’But that thing is going to transport me to some other dimension. I can’t—’

[Countdown: 5... 4... ]

Shit!

The last time Orion had seen him disappeared and was able to lie to Devon about his whereabouts. He didn’t have that luxury now for obvious reasons.

Without thinking, he barged back into his suite. "Devon, I might be late—!"

The air warped around him in a heartbeat. He vanished right when Devon spun his head to the suite door.

"... Ambrose?" The S-Rank’s eyes darted around. No trace of the Guide. Just the open door and a lingering feeling that he’d been right there a second ago.
