He couldn’t even remember how or when exactly he crashed. But the moment his eyes opened—he saw himself in an entirely different location.

"Well, fuck me sideways," he rasped, spitting out the dust on his mouth. "Now what do we have here...?"

Around him was a thick foliage of tall trees, moss-covered earth and vines bigger than the landlord in his past life. He grunted, pushing himself off the ground.

Sand stayed buried beneath his nails but that was the least of his worries. The trees around him blotted the sun’s rays but a few golden beams made him realise it was daytime.

The overlapping chirps of outlandish birds and insects resounded from every corner, making him increasingly tense. Water dropped from the leaves above, soaking the earth until it had that rich, slightly sweet smell that came after rain.

[Connection unstable.]

[Location... unregistered.]

Of course.

[Host advised to find the entrance the key opens to hopefully begin the quest.]

"Hopefully?!" He sneered. "Why are you acting like you have zero clue how any of this works?"

[Because I don’t.]

"... YOU gave me this key as a daily quest reward. Remember?"

[Doesn’t mean I don’t find it as odd as the next person. I can only run estimations and surface level scans—but really, the black key isn’t part of normal system mechanics.]

Ambrose ground his jaw.

He lifted the key to his gaze, staring at its pronged bit. It caught one of the sun’s rays, refracting it until he was forced to squint.

There was something really off about this key. For starters, the system didn’t know or understand its origins. And then the way it could just randomly teleport him to another dimension for a quest.

Last time he didn’t have the option of heading back home until the mission was cleared. Still—he couldn’t deny that the rewards had been very helpful.

Who knew what he could get here?

"I’ll never know till I try." He pulled in a deep breath, scanning the forest. Soon, he found something. A doorway etched into one of the nearby trees.

After taking one last glance around he inched toward it with careful steps. He pushed the key inside the keyhole and twisted once.

With a sharp click, the door swung open. Blinding white light shimmered from the other end, making him back up a bit. Then his expression hardened.

He charged past the door, landing on one knee when he got to the other side. Looking around it appeared to be the same rain forest.

Yet no sooner had his feet touched the ground than his spatial awareness screamed with danger. The hair on his arms stood on end as he got to his feet.

[WARNING: Multiple dungeon beast energy signatures detected.]

"Yeah, no shit." As expected when he stretched his hand backwards, he didn’t feel a tree or a doorway. Just an emptiness that reminded him there was no going back from this.

The black key disappeared back into the system’s storage. In its place—the twin Dragon fang blades. A piercing metallic sound rang as he rubbed the blades against each other.

[SPECIAL DAILY QUEST ACTIVATED.]

[OBJECTIVE: Survive Rain Forest Dungeon and clear it of every last dungeon beast...]

Holy...

[... In two hours.]

... Shit!

[REWARD: +5000 EP, +2000 HP, +5 added to every physical stat, and 2 instant revival beans.]

[PENALTY: You know the drill. Death.]

[Time starts now. Good luck, sweetness.]

A glowing blue system screen hovered before him. On it was a timer, ticking down like a bomb about to go off.

Clearing an entire dungeon ecosystem. Compared to the Grey Desert from last time this definitely felt monumentally harder.

Then he was only required to slay fifty beasts even though he could swear there were more entities out there.

"No matter," his grip on the blades tightened. "Bring it."

Although he said that so confidently, his fingers trembled, his heart pounding like war drums. Then... the forest went still. No more birds. No more pitter-patter from raindrops above.

Even the air itself seemed to have come to a halt.

Ambrose’s spatial awareness honed, stretching for two hundred meters. Scanning out any odd or sudden movements. Soon enough—it happened.

A blood-curdling screech cracked through the skies above. He’d barely raised his head when a massive shadow covered him, followed by a figure descending fast.

He kicked a foot into the earth, catapulting himself tens of meters backwards. To his utter horror, the beast didn’t stop, its head angling toward him before it touched the ground.

Powerful wind gales swept through the forest as it moved again, this time soaring straight toward him.

"Bloody—fuck!" He screamed, narrowly ducking away from its beak.

He skidded through the ground, rolling until his back slammed into a tree. Air escaped his lungs but he didn’t have time to feel pain.

From this distance, he got a chance to take in his assailant. It was a bird-like beast—standing over ten feet tall and covered in rough black feathers. Its beak was jagged, connected to a skeletal head that made him want to dig a hole and hide.

’Run stats on that fucker.’

[Running stats...]

[Nightmare Falcon. A lower A-Rank monster. Its wings not only give it dominion over the skies but also allow it to conjure and control massive bursts of wind.]

At the mention of A-Rank, his mind flashed back to Norfolk. Back to those bipedal beasts and the injured one that had almost taken his life if it weren’t for Valentine.

Then he was nothing but a C-Rank. Even now his official rank according to the system was B. Yet... he could feel it in his bones.

He wasn’t helpless as he was back then. He actually had a fighting chance now.

A decisive smirk curved his mouth as the falcon inclined its bloodshot red eyes at him. A guttural chitter left its throat as he pushed himself back to his feet, snapping his neck.

The dragon fang twin blades hadn’t slipped out of his grip—instead veined with molten light that only grew brighter by the second.

"You picked the wrong Guide to hunt," he exhaled, rolling his shoulders as his smirk broke into a crazed grin.
