"How did he even get this hurt?"

"It’s Han... I fucking knew there was something off when we brushed past him in the hallways."

"Devon, let’s not jump to conclusions."

"Tell me then, Vik. Who or what could’ve possibly hurt him this much?"

Ambrose lay in a bed, eyes fluttering weakly as Viktor and Devon talked at the other side of the room. He recognised the room—the Guild’s infirmary.

The nurses and doctors would probably be stunned that he was in here again barely hours after being discharged. He could tell that much from the look on their faces before leaving the room.

’My... arm...’ even his mental voice was rough at the edges. ’Aura, you told me I’d be good as new after the black key takes me back.’

[I mean... technically you are, right? There aren’t any physical injuries or anything.]

’Yet I feel like shit.’ he heaved back a curse. ’Fuck... just show me my mission rewards. It’s been a long day.’

[Rewards loaded.]

[+5000 EP, +2000 HP, +5 added to every physical stat, and 2 instant revival beans.]

Ambrose’s eyes widened at that final detail.

A higher A-Rank monster... while he was still at B-Rank?

[You have to remember that the EP points needed to be an aether hybrid are much higher than those of Guides and Espers.]

[For example... with your current points you should already be a step into S-Rank as an Esper or A-Rank as a Guide. But you need much more aether to keep both sides stable.]

Now he couldn’t help but recall something. ’How many points do I need to cross over to an A-Rank Aether Hybrid?’

[20000.]

Well, fuck.

On the one hand, becoming stronger with the system’s method made him superior to both Espers and Guides. But then... gathering all those EP points only to stay stuck in the same rank felt like a rip-off.

Plus... one more thing...

’An S-Rank like Devon has 10000 EP points. And I do too... Why is my power level comparable to an A-Rank beast?’

[The letters used to differentiate ranks aren’t just for show. While you and Devon might have the same quantity of Aether energy... his quality and density are far more refined.]

Huh.

Kinda makes sense.

[Now that you’re done analysing numbers... Can you address the elephant in the room? Actually—two elephants in the room.]

No sooner had Aura said that than Viktor cleared his throat.

"I thought I felt you stirring," the Ice prince was already beside his bed, placing a hand on his shoulder. Ambrose flinched but managed a wry smile. "How are you feeling?"

"... Well. Take a wild guess."

Devon joined Viktor, his expression far more tense. And scrutinising. Emphasis on the scrutiny. "The doctor said you should be good to go. You have no wounds but must’ve fainted from... shock of whatever assault you went through."

[See? Good as new.]

’Fuck you.’ In reality, Ambrose’s eyes lit up. "That’s great news. So—"

"But you can’t leave," Devon’s tone was flat. "Not yet at least. Not until you tell us where you went, what happened to you and why you weren’t picking up calls or texts."

Ah, shucks.

Of course, the guy would want to question him.

Ambrose pressed his lips together as he made himself sit up. "Phew," his eyes flicked between both men. "You wouldn’t believe it if I told you."

[... Something tells me I won’t, either.]

"Give it a try, Rose." Devon didn’t look away for even a split second. "Tell us. Was it Han?"

Surprise flashed on Ambrose’s face.

In hindsight, Han could be the perfect scapegoat to pin this on. But then he’d just deny it like he always does... although this time he’d be telling the truth.

So—he brushed that idea aside faster than it came and went with something completely different.

"I..." he began, keeping his voice low. "I actually went for a walk. Out of the building—then all I can remember next was getting involved in a hit and run."

Viktor’s icy blue eyes bulged. "Really?"

Ambrose nodded, noticing Devon’s silence while he lied through his teeth.

The S-Rank wasn’t buying it.

He looked through the Guild’s CCTV footage. Ambrose did step out. But then he walked back into the suite and that was the last he saw of him.

No more footage from outside the building. No signs of teleportation... although, now that he thought about it, what if he did teleport?

Still, how? Gabriel?

If Ambrose really was dilly-dallying around with one of the continent’s top SS-Ranks then why not just tell them instead of lying?

"Devon?" Ambrose’s voice pulled him out of his head before he could think any deeper. He blinked once, gaze focusing on those silver orbs. "Y–You heard everything I said right? I know you might still be mad I didn’t answer your texts. But I didn’t mean to."

[I don’t know if I should be impressed by the emotional blackmail or scold you.]

’You caused this, Aura.’

[Ah. Deflection. Classic.]

"Wait," Viktor raised a hand. "I’m not saying you’re lying or anything..."

Shit.

So much for foolproof lies.

"... But," Viktor went on, failing to notice the way sweat dripped down the Guide’s forehead. "We checked some C—"

"Of course, we aren’t mad." Devon pressed the back of his hand against Viktor’s chest, signalling him to stop. Then his mouth stretched into a warm smile. "We’re just glad you’re okay, Rose."

Ambrose’s brows knitted.

For a hot second, he thought they were about to pull out undeniable evidence that he was lying.

Devon held that smile for a second longer.

Then—he leaned in slightly. Close enough that only Ambrose could hear.

"Next time you lie to me, Rose..." his voice dropped. Almost gentle. "Make sure I’m not already close to the truth."

He pulled back like nothing happened. Still smiling. While Ambrose stiffened as though he had been struck by lightning.
