Seducing the Guideverse With My System — Raising an Anomaly [BL]
Chapter 143: _Bad At LyingSaying the walk back to the suite was awkward would be a grand understatement. Every step Ambrose and Devon took down the hallway was heavy.
Viktor left not quite long ago, leaving them alone with all the unspoken tension from the infirmary. Whenever Ambrose tried stealing a glance from Devon, he’d catch the Esper either already staring at him or trying hard to look away.
It was making him run nuts by the second.
Finally, they got in front of the suite door. Devon pulled out Ambrose’s key card, waving it at him. "Hopefully you don’t go back to that white room anytime soon."
Before Ambrose could remark, he’d swiped the card and pushed the door open. They’d barely stepped in when a small, groggy voice chimed from one of the sofas.
"Daddy?" Orion rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand, his shoulders slouching slowly. "P–Papa. Where have you two been?"
Ambrose’s face paled while Devon’s eyes widened. Both exchanged a look before the latter wore a bright smile, rushing to their son.
"That’s not important now, buddy." He picked him off the ground. "Why are you awake? Couldn’t sleep?"
The kid shook his head. "I had a... a bad dream." He lowered his head. "Daddy was really sick. It was so... bad."
Devon’s smile trembled. An image of Ambrose leaning against that alley wall, all bloody and drowsy, made his stomach twist.
The Guide had gotten a change of clothes thanks to Viktor. But still... the thought that something worse might’ve happened to him. Or that he’d have to face little Orion after.
"It was nothing but a bad dream," he managed to say before Ambrose could step in. His fingers flicked off a stray strand of hair over Orion’s eyes. "Come on. I’ll take you to bed and tell you a bedtime story"
A gentle smile played on the boy’s lips. "Like one of those princess stories?"
"Exactly, little light."
Ambrose watched the S-Rank stride calmly toward Orion’s room, not looking back even once. The moment the door clicked shut behind them, he let out a rough sigh.
’We’re definitely going to have a long talk when he comes back.’ he huffed, brushing a hand through his hair. The motion allowed him to catch a whiff of his armpit, making his face scrunch. "Phew—I’m in dire need of a bath."
★★★★★
It only took a few minutes for Ambrose to peel off his clothes and submerge himself in the cool waters of his bedroom’s bathtub. He sighed with satisfaction, throwing his head back as he rested his arms on either side.
"That’s the stuff," he breathed in the scented soaps, a relaxed smirk settling on his mouth. "At least I can get a few more moments of this before—"
"Before Devon comes in and ruins your fun?"
Ambrose nearly jumped out of the water, snapping his neck to the bathroom entrance instead. Sure enough, there stood Devon, arms folded and head tilted curiously.
The Esper’s gaze trailed gradually, from his face to his chest—and probably much lower if it weren’t for the water blocking his view.
"Y–You..." Ambrose swallowed hard. "How do you keep doing that thing?"
"... What?"
"Popping up right when I’m getting comfortable in my thoughts," His cheeks reddened when the staring became too intense. "A heads up would be nice."
Spatial awareness detected movement a few seconds ago... but he was so carried away by how soothing the bath was that he ignored the sensations.
Devon’s eyes glinted with amusement. "As if you give me heads-ups whenever you’re off for one of your shenanigans." He scoffed, bringing his hands to the hem of his shirt. "Move."
That made Ambrose’s brows knit with confusion. "Move... my body?"
"No. Your money." Devon’s eyes rolled hard while already slipping out of his shirt. His muscles glistened under the bathroom lights, magnifying the blush on the Guide’s cheeks. "There’s enough room in there for two people, Rose. Come on. We need to talk anyway."
The words at the end of the sentence almost crumbled the horny thoughts streaming through Ambrose’s head.
Almost.
He cleared his throat, pulling his feet back enough for Devon to step in. The latter unbuckled his pants and dropped them alongside his underwear.
Ambrose struggled to keep his eyes away from that soft nine-incher. He bit into his right fist, closing his eyes for a bit as Devon lowered himself into the water.
Devon settled at the opposite end of the tub, the water shifting around them in slow ripples. For a moment... Neither of them spoke.
Just stared.
Ambrose tried to act casual—really, he did—but the weight in Devon’s gaze made it impossible. It wasn’t heated.
It was... searching. Calculating.
And that was somehow worse.
"You’re terrible at lying, you know that?" Devon finally said, voice quiet.
Ambrose’s stomach dropped. "Excuse—"
"I know," Devon cut in gently. Not harsh.
Not accusing. Just sure. "About Orion."
Silence.
Thick, suffocating silence.
"What?" Ambrose’s voice came out smaller than he intended.
Devon leaned back slightly, eyes never leaving his. "He’s mine, isn’t he?" A pause. "Biologically."
Ambrose’s breath hitched.
SHIT!
His fingers curled under the water, panic crashing into him all at once. A thousand excuses ran through his head—none of them good enough.
"I–I didn’t..." he swallowed hard, shaking his head. "He just... showed up, okay? A couple of weeks ago. Right outside my door. I didn’t even know what to think, I just..." he let out a shaky breath.
"I took him in. Took care of him. I didn’t know how to tell you because how the hell do you explain that without sounding insane?"
The words spilt out messier than he intended.
And Devon listened.
Then... he smiled.
Under the water, his hand found Ambrose’s—fingers lacing through his without hesitation.
"Well," he murmured, squeezing gently. "Now I know."
Ambrose blinked. "That’s it?"
"That’s it." Devon’s thumb brushed against his knuckles. "Nothing’s changed." A beat. "Except now we gotta figure out how he got here."
Ambrose’s chest tightened.
The system flickered quietly at the back of his mind but he said nothing.
Devon leaned forward then and cupped the back of his head.
The kiss that followed was soft. Unrushed.
And when they pulled apart... neither of them moved as the air shifted into something charged.
Devon’s gaze dipped, then rose again—darker this time. Ambrose knew instantly that this wasn’t ending with a mere convo.
