Chicago, Illinois

A portal with glowing white edges flickered into existence at the top of one of the high-rise buildings. It pulsed once—before two men walked out, their mere presence exuding power.

One of them flicked his wrist, making the portal close behind them. "Thanks for accompanying me for this, Valentine." Gabriel angled his head to the Necromancer beside him.

He wore a sharp, form-fitting crimson suit, his short black hair perfectly styled. The fading light of the closing portal glistened on his caramel skin.

In contrast, Valentine adjusted the collar of his black cashmere trench coat. "How adorable. You think I chose to tag along because of you?" A small smirk curved his mouth as he raised his head to the night sky. "I’m merely here for research. It’s not all the time you get the chance to be up close with an SS-Rank monster."

Gabriel kissed his teeth but chose to ignore the remark. His gaze turned to the city ahead. "So here’s the mission report. The Federation got reports from local Guilds in this city. They vary but all point to an unidentified, humanoid entity."

Valentine sniggered. "Does the void entity plan to integrate itself into society now?"

"We aren’t sure of anything, Valentine. Which is why the Federation pinged the closest SS-Rank Hunter to the scene."

"And you just had to drag me along in babysitting you."

"Y–You..." Gabriel glared at him. "Focus, damnit. I’ve fought that thing once. It barely made any moves to attack and still managed to be... terrifying."

Admitting that last word was a jab at his pride. But he had to be honest here.

Truth be told, he really did contact Valentine so he wouldn’t have to be alone in this. Fortunately, the guy was on board like they were going treasure hunting.

"Alright, you big baby." Valentine shoved him with his elbow teasingly. "Anyway... speaking of the federation—did President Josiah say anything after last week?"

Gabriel’s brows creased.

Right.

Last week while he and Valentine lounged at his favourite restaurant in Vancouver, the president of the United States Federation had visited them.

Anyone would think it had to be of world-breaking importance for the President of one of the most powerful Hunter federations to actively seek them... until they heard what the man had to ask.

"He didn’t," Gabriel shook his head. "And before you ask, I haven’t heard anything about the so-called C-Rank as well."

"Ambrose." Valentine’s brow arched over his sunglasses. "Now, now...don’t pretend like you can’t remember the name of the only man you’ve kissed in years."

Those last words were Gabriel’s final straw. "I’m done with your bullshit," he snapped his neck back to the city, shifting the conversation seamlessly back to its original course. "We should be able to cover enough ground in the city if we concentrate. An entity of that power level shouldn’t... be hard..."

The rest of the sentence hooked midway through his throat. The cool night breeze suddenly stilled around them, sounds from traffic, pedestrians and city life in general—dulling out until there was nothing.

It was like the city itself was holding its breath.

Valentine sensed something was wrong too.

His eyes darted to a single point in the city, narrowing when a familiar sensation thrummed through him. The same, chilling high he got when dozens of lives left the earth.

Except—this felt vastly different.

Soon, sound returned to the city. The first thing they heard was overlapping screams.

Gabriel’s pulse stuttered. "That’s got to be it..." he spread out a palm, cutting Valentine a glance. "Ready?"

The Esper merely gave a nod.

They vanished, reappearing directly on the part of the city where the screams were coming from. However, Gabriel’s eyes widened as they took in the chaos around them.

Cars pulled to a halt as people stepped out and ran in the opposite direction. Sirens blared from other parts of the city—although it was far too late for any sort of disaster response.

"... Well, shit." Valentine whistled.

Because before them was a vast, empty blackness where the Chicago Riverwalk was supposed to flow through. No buildings. No roads. Just a seemingly endless stretch of darkness.

Like something had carved a piece out of the world and left behind a hollow that refused to be filled.

At the edge of the remaining walkway, the river still flowed... until it didn’t. The water reached the boundary and spilt over.

A cascading waterfall poured into the void, yet no sound echoed from below. No splash. No distant crash. Just silence, as though the fall itself had been swallowed whole.

Even the light seemed wrong. It didn’t reflect. Didn’t bend. It simply... vanished the moment it touched the black.

Gabriel’s face twisted with horror. "All the people here... everything..."

"Erased wholly from existence," Valentine shook his head. He lifted a hand, walking forward until he was at the edge of the void.

He proceeded to stretch that hand into the void—shivers slithering down his spine the moment he did. After a quick test, he pulled his hand back to himself.

"The void entity shouldn’t be too far," he threw Gabriel a look. At this point, most people on the streets had fled. "Maybe you can try... tele—"

His stomach dropped.

In a flash, he grabbed Gabriel by the wrist and then leapt backwards with him. The phantom of a bird-like beast used its wings to shield them for extra protection.

Once they were a safe distance away and the phantom disappeared, Gabriel slipped out of the Necromancer’s grip. That’s when he saw what he escaped.

The spot where they’d been standing mere seconds ago... was gone. The pavement was now nothing but an oval-shaped hole of nothingness. A huge chunk of a car close to it had also been erased.

After the initial couple of seconds of shock, both men turned their gazes back to the deleted part of the city. It hadn’t been visible at first. But its abrupt attack made its presence known.

The void entity—hovering within the void like it was its home. Its faceless head tilted as it assessed the humans it was so close to erasing.

Unsettling silence hung in the space between them. Then... the impossible happened.

It spoke.

"Humans... aren’t... ready..."

The void behind it shifted.

And then—it began to grow.
