Phoenix Flight HQ

Ambrose’s eyes opened the next morning lazily. He clutched the bedsheets tightly over his body, turning until he was lying on his stomach.

As expected, Devon wasn’t beside him.

That brought a gentle smile to his lips.

The Esper always did this whenever he slept over. Wake up before him just to make breakfast. It was equal parts amusing and adorable.

[Good morning, sweetness.] Aura greeted just then.

Ambrose yawned, slowly sitting up before stretching out his arms. ’Good morning, Aura.’ he blinked back the wetness in his eyes, head inclining to the bedroom door. ’What are our plans today?’

[Well...there is your Daily Quest. But before loading that, why don’t we first deal with the consequences of your actions?]

His forehead wrinkled. "Huh?"

[You’ve forgotten? Last night Devon confronted you about the truth. With Orion that is. And you admitted that he was correct.]

Now Ambrose was confused. ’You’re the one who said we both needed to raise the kid together from the beginning. Remember?’

Even talking mentally felt strenuous.

’Aura, it’s too early for this bullshit.’

[I didn’t say his knowing is a bad thing. What I’m saying is, now you’ve got to make sure the secrets stay between the two of you. You can recall that he did a DNA test, right?]

His frown deepened. ’... Okay. And?’

[People don’t pluck DNA tests from trees, dingus. Who did he get the test from? And how? Are Orion’s personal details safe? Did they also find out about his Esper-Guide nature?]

The moment the stream of words clicked, Ambrose’s face paled. His fingers dug deeper into the bedsheets, his windpipe constricting. ’Shit.’

[Shit indeed. You’ve got your work set out for you—welcome to official co-parenting.]

No sooner had the system said that than the door swung open. Ambrose flinched but then relaxed when he saw who it was.

"Ah... you’re finally up." Devon’s eyes gleamed with a warm light as he strode into the room with a tray between his hands. "Good morning, gorgeous."

Ambrose didn’t answer immediately.

His gaze swept over the S-Rank—taking in him like a masterful art piece he was seeing for the first time. He wore a black pair of pants and a grey singlet... leaving those biceps out in the open.

It appeared like he put effort into not looking like a hobo, but his fiery red hair was still slightly ruffled, falling down his face in scattered strands.

Ambrose gulped, forcing a smile as the Esper got to the bed. He sat beside him, placing the tray carefully on the lamp stand.

"Morning," Ambrose managed a response as his eyes slid to the tray. On it was a plate of waffles with berries and honey drizzled on them.

Beside that was a glass of orange juice—the scent alone made Ambrose subconsciously lick his bottom lip. "Well, damn." He met Devon’s gaze. "Breakfast in bed?"

"The fastest thing I could whip up on such short notice," the Esper’s smile widened. "Come on... eat. We’ve got a few errands to run today."

He pressed a small kiss on Ambrose’s temple before pushing himself off the bed. Before he could move further, the Guide called him back.

"Wait." Ambrose squinted. "Errands? Like what?"

"Well," Devon didn’t beat around the bush. "We’ve kept Orion sheltered long enough. The public already has some photos of him. So—I was thinking it’s about time he gets integrated properly into society."

Ambrose stiffened.

He already knew what that meant but went ahead to ask: "Do you mean... like school?"

"Yep." Devon gave him a thumbs-up. Then, as if he noticed the shift in Ambrose’s mood, he added. "I know it might be difficult for you to let go of him. But he needs an education and also needs to start interacting with kids his age."

Ambrose’s fingers curled slightly around the edge of the tray.

School.

The word sat heavy in his chest, pressing against something protective. His gaze dropped to the waffles, but he wasn’t really seeing them anymore.

’School means people,’ he thought. ’Records. Attention. Questions.’

What if someone recognised Orion? What if whoever ran that DNA test still had access to his data? What if—

His jaw tightened.

And then... another thought crept in.

The Guild.

Han.

The memory of that day flashed through his mind—Cecil’s words, the attempted kidnapping, the way Han was still walking around as if nothing had happened.

Safe?

Yeah. Right.

Ambrose let out a slow breath, dragging a hand down his face. ’Nowhere’s really safe, is it...?’

If danger could reach Orion even inside the Guild then hiding him away wasn’t the solution either.

"Tch." He clicked his tongue softly before lifting his head. "I don’t like it."

Devon didn’t interrupt. He just watched him.

"But..." Ambrose exhaled again, quieter this time. "Keeping him locked up isn’t any better." His shoulders slumped slightly. "Fine. We’ll... figure something out."

For a second, Devon didn’t move. Then a small, genuine smile spread across his face.

"That’s all I’m asking," he said, stepping closer. "We’ll figure this parenting thing out together." His hand found Ambrose’s, squeezing gently. "One step at a time. Like we’ve been doing."

Ambrose huffed softly, though his fingers tightened back. "Yeah. One step at a time."

"Papa! Daddy!" Orion’s voice rang out from the living room, shattering the moment. "They’re talking about a monster!"

Devon moved first.

Ambrose barely had time to blink before the Esper was already out the door.

The Guide scrambled out of bed, grabbing the nearest pair of underwear and pants. He tugged them on hastily, running a hand through his messy hair.

’I’ll need a long bath after this...’

By the time he got to the living room, Devon was already standing in front of the TV, Orion perched beside him on the sofa.

Ambrose slowed.

On the screen—a reporter stood against a backdrop that made his stomach drop. Because he recognised that place all too well.

Chicago.

Or what was left of it.

"...authorities have confirmed that the anomalous ’void’ has now spread to cover nearly half of Chicago," the reporter spoke, voice tight with urgency. "Evacuations are currently underway for the remaining districts, as well as surrounding cities."

Images flashed across the screen.

Missing blocks. Falling water into nothingness. Entire streets... gone.

"The current death toll is still being estimated, but officials fear the numbers could rise significantly. At this time, investigators are unable to confirm whether this attack was random—"

Ambrose’s thoughts cut that sentence short.

’Random...?’

His eyes narrowed slightly, something cold settling in his chest.

No.

It didn’t feel random.

Not at all.

Because out of every city in the world... It had to be Chicago.

The same city he once lived in.

Back when he was Benji Foster.

Ambrose’s fingers curled at his sides, his gaze locked on the screen as a quiet unease crept up his spine.

"What are the chances?" he murmured under his breath.
