"This is..." Devon’s fingers tightened on the sofa he leaned against. He almost couldn’t comprehend what he was watching.

Half of a city—wiped out overnight.

His eyes darted to Orion.

As always the little boy seemed unfazed by the terrors shown on TV. On the contrary, his eyes gleamed with interest as the broadcast went on, showing different angles of the void within the city.

He turned his head to Ambrose next.

The Guide was quiet. Almost too quiet. His eyes were distant, posture rigid, as if he was afraid the dangers on the television were going to claw out and grab him.

That confused Devon.

It was normal to feel disturbed by something of this magnitude. But something about the way Ambrose stared seemed...personal.

"Rose?" He couldn’t bear the silence, squinting when Ambrose finally tore his eyes off the screen. "Are you okay? You... spaced out."

Ambrose blinked a couple of times before he waved dismissively. "Of course, I’m fine. It’s just... we’re watching a possible global crisis on the loose," his throat bulged slightly. "It’s normal to be scared shitless."

Devon let his gaze linger on the Guide.

He wanted to believe all he just said. But he couldn’t brush off this odd feeling that there was something Ambrose wasn’t telling him.

Which made him wonder. What could be crazier than sharing a child who somehow had both their DNAs?

"The remote," Ambrose suddenly snapped his fingers at Orion. The boy’s forehead creased but he hesitantly handed the controller to his daddy.

Without wasting a second, Ambrose changed the channel to a kids’ cartoon. That made Orion jump from his sofa.

"Daddy, I was watching that!"

"Well, not anymore, young man." He wasn’t the least bit moved. "News like that is troubling. Do you want to have nightmares, little light?"

Orion pouted, looking over to his papa for assistance. When Devon offered none, he grumbled. "I’m not going to have nightmares. The news is fun—especially the ones with the cool monsters."

Ambrose’s mouth parted to speak but Orion added something completely unexpected:

"Daddy, why do I feel like YOU’RE the one scared of the news?"

Devon’s brows furrowed.

Took the words right out of his mouth.

Meanwhile, Ambrose’s face paled. ’This kid is saying the most random scary shit.’

[You do realise you’re spiralling right? Shaky hands, short breaths, quickened heartbeat...]

’I’ve got every fucking right to spiral!’ he snapped mentally. ’That thing went after the city from my past life. No one is going to gaslight me into thinking it’s random.’

[Well, if you paid any attention to the news, you’d know it’s still on the run again.]

’And?’

[You’re dreading something that isn’t here yet. And the people around you are clearly noticing the shift in your emotions.]

Those were the words that made Ambrose’s shoulders slouch. Devon and Orion still had their eyes on him. Both had equal signs of concern.

He balled his fists, letting himself take a relaxing exhale. "I’m not scared, Orion." The words came out gently. Unhurried. "I just don’t want you getting unnecessarily worried. But—I guess watching a bit of the news isn’t so bad."

When Orion blinked at him without saying a word, Ambrose kept the smile on his face, walking to Devon’s side. He grabbed the S-Rank’s arm, pulling him aside until they were a good distance away.

"We can’t go out there." He dropped it with a finality that startled Devon.

The latter frowned. "What?"

"We can’t take Orion to school, Devon. You’re seeing the news."

"W–We literally talked about this, Rose. And you were on board with—"

"That was before a Star Trek knock-off villain started walking around deleting cities," Ambrose struggled to keep his voice low. "I feel unsafe as it is, Devon. Taking Orion out there now... Jesus, I won’t be able to—"

"He’s my son too," Devon’s expression became more serious. "In every sense of the word. And I’m telling you what you’re doing now is unfair to him and yourself. He can’t remain caged forever."

Ambrose shook his head. "The world is too dangerous for him right now."

"This world has ALWAYS been dangerous, Rose." Devon countered. "For us Hunters and for everyone else. Has that stopped any of us from living?"

Silence.

Only the theme song from the cartoon Orion was watching filled the room. Ambrose’s fingers curled but he couldn’t say anything.

Because once again... Devon was right.

Seeing his silence, Devon cleared his throat. "We told ourselves we’ll do this one step at a time. Remember?" He gave the Guide a gentle shoulder tap. "Please, just relax. The Federation is on the lookout for that thing and I doubt it’s interested in hunting down some child."

Ambrose’s jaw flexed silently.

Some child...

If only Orion were just that.

"We’re supposed to leave by nine AM," Devon spun on his feet just then, pulling out his phone. "I set an appointment with a school already. They’re expecting us."

As he headed for the kitchen, Ambrose watched with a lump in his throat. Something still didn’t sit right with him.

"Devon?" He called out, cutting Orion a look to make sure he wasn’t listening in. Once he confirmed he wasn’t, he whispered. "You... got someone to do that DNA test for you, right?"

Devon arched his brow. "... Yeah? Why?"

"Someone in this Guild?"

"Yes, a trusted doctor—where are you going with this?"

Something unreadable flickered behind Ambrose’s eyes for a beat—but it disappeared just as fast as a warm grin played on his mouth. "Nothing much," he kept his arms behind his back. "I’d... like to know who this doctor is. You don’t mind that, right?"

[What are you plotting?]

’Ensuring there aren’t any loose ends.’ he responded coldly. ’If this so-called doctor got any info from Orion’s DNA, proving his Esper-Guide nature... then we’ve got bigger problems than that void entity.’

Devon did nothing but monitor the Guide’s face for a few seconds. He felt like finding out why he was curious about that—but at this point, he thought it best that he didn’t hold anything back.

As long as it puts his mind at ease.

"I don’t mind."
