Doctor Kelly.

That was the name of the person Devon got to run a DNA test on Orion. Of course, the Esper didn’t give the woman many details on whom the hair strand belonged to—at least, that’s what Devon said.

She was a Guide. A-Rank, but she rarely partook in field work. Her main duty in the Guild was caring for wounded Espers and Guides.

She and Devon have apparently known each other since college too.

"Don’t tell me y’all dated." Ambrose gave the man a scrutinising look after he revealed that last bit.

Devon brushed it off, saying nothing of the sort happened. He thought Ambrose was being paranoid after watching the news. In reality, the cunning Guide was merely putting up a front.

One that wouldn’t make him suspect he had something else cooking in his mind.

Ambrose excused himself to the bathroom and freshened up as fast as possible. They had to go to the school Devon had talked about by nine, and it was currently forty-seven minutes past seven.

That should be enough time for a quick visit to the doctor.

"You’re stepping out?" Devon frowned from behind the kitchen island when Ambrose popped out of his bedroom in new clothes. "You barely touched your pancakes. Don’t tell me you’re going to disappear again. You aren’t avoiding this, Rose."

The latter only smiled, leaving a hand halfway away from the doorknob. "I’m just stepping out for a few minutes," seeing the Esper’s frown deepening, he added. "I’ll be fine. Just... call me if I’m getting too late."

"Oh, you mean like I did last time?"

"I was in an accident, Devon."

"Keep telling yourself that," Devon shook his head, pointing a spoon at him. "You spend too long out there and I’m coming to grab you."

Ambrose grinned teasingly. "Ouuu, how kinky." Then he blew a kiss, glancing once at Orion still glued to the TV screen. "I’ll be right back."

The door shut behind him, leaving Devon with his thoughts. He was no seer but he had a feeling the Guide was up to something.

Then again... when is Ambrose Hale ever not up to something?

"Papa?" Orion’s sheepish call from the sofa made Devon snap his neck to him. The boy looked over his shoulder, eyes gleaming with innocent curiosity. "What does ’kinky’ mean?"

Devon’s cheeks flushed redder than a tomato.

’Fuck, Rose...’

The floor where the Guild’s infirmary was located was quiet with almost no activity.

White overhead lights. Pristine white marble floors. Sharp, yellow painted walls—the simplicity of the floor when compared to others was very much obvious.

Most of the rooms, lined from the beginning to the end, were stocked with medical supplies. However, when Ambrose strode out of the elevator, his focus was set on one room he’s become a constant visitor to for the past week.

[So, are you about to go interrogate a doctor and make yourself even more suspicious to someone else?]

’No.’ Ambrose kept his chin low, keeping his face shielded with his red cap while pretending to be on his phone. ’The goal is to fish out this doctor and figure out if she knows too much.’

[You sound like you’re planning on getting rid of this person.]

Ambrose didn’t respond.

Ever since he got to this world, he’s been careful and strategic. He’s adapted fast enough to the idiots around him while fighting hard to keep his secrets hidden.

Devon getting to find out about Orion’s origins was an inevitable possibility he’d considered from the beginning. Maybe a few of the other Espers he links himself with along the line.

But anyone else? In the current political climate the world was in since the Echo Rift, he could already imagine what they’d do if they got their hands on an anomaly like Orion.

Or even himself.

And he’d be damned if he let one insignificant Guide ruin the safety he’s fought to keep.

He finally stopped in front of the infirmary double doors. There was a small space covered in glass that allowed him to peer into the large room.

That and his spatial awareness made him know that there were only seven people inside. Two nurses and five Espers who were injured during a recent Dungeon raid.

He slipped his hands into his pockets.

No signs of a doctor anywhere—

Chills rolled through every cell in him just then. His eyes widened as he swerved his head on time to see a woman walking toward him.

She wore a white lab coat and had chestnut brown hair tied in a bun. She adjusted her glasses as her eyes scanned him from head to toes.

"Hello," Ambrose stepped back, wearing the brightest smile he could muster on such short notice. "Sorry, I was just... curious to see the injured Hunters."

His eyes caught something on her right chest.

A name tag.

Dr. Kelly!

"Oh," she got to the door, pausing in front of him. "It’s... fine... wait." Her head tilted. "You’re that C-Rank Guide. The one who’s popped in here twice within the past week."

[What a reputation...]

Ambrose ignored Aura and nodded. "That’s me." His forced chuckle managed to bring a smile from the woman. So far she didn’t seem suspicious at all. "I’m guessing you’re one of the kind doctors who looked after me during my coma."

To his surprise, she blushed like he’d said the funniest thing.

What the heck is wrong with—wait a minute.

’... Is this...’ a mischievous light glinted in those silver orbs. ’Of course. My charm aura ability.’

Well, well, well.

Looks like finding out what he wants won’t be so hard if he plays his cards right.

"I was merely doing my job." Kelly gave a humble wave. "You’re looking so good already. I saw the way Devon kept looking at you by the way."

She paused, placing a hand beside her mouth as though she had some juicy gossip. "He must really be taking good care of you."

The smile on Ambrose’s lips faltered for a split second.

Okay... maybe this charm aura thing was working too well.

"I guess you can say that," he played along regardless. "Speaking of Devon—I’d like to ask you something. If that’s okay with you."

The doctor’s eyes piqued with curiosity. "Sure. What is it?"

He parted his mouth, ready to question her about the test on Orion. Then all of a sudden—he heard this aggravating, grating voice chime down the hallway.

"Has the infirmary become your new home, Rory?"

Ambrose’s expression twisted with a clear scowl. He angled his head in the direction of the voice and wasn’t even a bit surprised when he saw who was approaching.

Guide Han Jae-won.

Who else than the man most skilled at ruining people’s mornings?
