"Well," Ambrose didn’t know how to answer that question but still felt the need to take control. Fast. "Orion—"

"He’s been homeschooled before now." Devon subconsciously brushed his boot against the Guide’s. That grounded Ambrose enough to let him continue. "Also, looking into his records? Why? Is there something wrong?"

The principal’s eyes widened. "What? No, of course not, Mr Ferguson." She shook her head vehemently. "It’s merely protocol. Records like that help us know his current academic capabilities and if he’ll need extra attention."

Ambrose gave the woman a long look.

His senses were heightened enough to pick up her heartbeat. Gaze sharp enough to notice the calm despite how quickly she tried clearing the air.

He felt no signs of someone with a hidden vendetta. So—why did sitting in this office feel like he was standing under a bucket of nails?

"Since," the principal forced a cough, shifting the topic, "he doesn’t have prior school records. What about any certificates? Birth certificates? Medical records..."

This time Ambrose was forced to chime in. "Are we enrolling our kid into a training camp for World War III?"

His words brought genuine surprise to her face. "... Our?" She repeated, swerving her head to Devon. "Mr Ferguson, is this man your—?"

"Partner. Yes," Devon laid it out like it was another Tuesday, adjusting his sitting position. "Listen, can we skip past these miscellaneous details? I’ll sort out any important documentation you may need in due time."

Ambrose inclined his head to him for a beat. Sure enough, the principal nodded once with a smile, setting aside the folder before her.

"That’ll be no problem, Mr Ferguson."

Well, damn.

The perks of a powerful family name.

He’s seen examples in novels he read in his past life but... seeing it happen in reality? He didn’t even have to sweet-talk his way with his charm aura.

"I’ll just need to ask the little boy a few questions," the principal raised a finger at Devon before beaming brightly at Orion.

Since they walked into the academy the kid has been quiet. Which was unusual... but then again, there was rarely anything he did that wasn’t.

Devon turned his head to Ambrose just then. The latter did the same and although words weren’t uttered—the looks in their eyes were enough.

There was no dodging this part of the meeting. Not without appearing too suspicious to the older woman.

"Orion," the principal’s smile widened slightly when the boy’s golden eyes pinned her. "How old are you, buddy?"

The kid blinked for a second or two, glancing at both his parents as if seeking approval to speak. Then, "I’m... six."

"Splendid." Mrs Sullivan gave a small nod. "What’s your favourite thing to do for fun?"

Orion didn’t hesitate. "Learning about dungeon beasts. They’re so cool!" He grinned. "Oh, and watching the Kardashians with my daddy. And eating my papa’s delicious food."

Ambrose’s cheeks burned so much he thought his hair would light up in flames.

At this point transmigrating back to his old life didn’t sound all that bad.

Fortunately, the principal didn’t seem disturbed. "Those are... interesting things to do for fun, bud."

She went on to ask him a few more questions before speaking mostly to Devon. Orion could come back and officially start school tomorrow.

Based on his intelligence, she believed the first grade was the perfect start for him. Fortunately, the school term was only a bit over a week in so he had time to catch up.

As they walked down the stairs leading into the building, Ambrose cut his gaze to Devon. "Really?"

The latter frowned, clearly not knowing what he was talking about. "What?"

"I was barely any use in there. Mrs Nepo baby sniffer was all about you and that Ferguson life."

"Mrs Nepo baby—Rose, don’t start." Devon rubbed the bridge of his nose. "If it were anyone else she wouldn’t have let the whole documentation thing slide easily. No one would’ve."

Orion stayed silent between them as they approached the black sedan beside the sidewalk. Before Devon could open the driver’s door, Ambrose chimed:

"That’s my point exactly, Devon," he kept his voice low. "Orion is my kid too. In matters like this, it would be nice to feel useful instead of some stereotypical trophy wife."

Devon’s brows crumpled with more confusion. "Trophy wife? What are you even talking about?"

"You paid all the fees beforehand. Yes or no?"

"I mean, yeah... but that—"

"Then YOU were the one who made sure she didn’t pry deeper into our boy’s certification." Ambrose’s lips twisted in a sarcastic sneer. "What was I useful for?"

Orion tugged at his fingers just then. "Emotional support, daddy."

Ambrose inhaled once, stopping himself from glaring at the little urchin. He noticed a few people walking past giving them curious or judgmental stares.

It wouldn’t be long before cameras pop out and they become the next Hunter celebrity gossip headline.

Maybe he really was overreacting...

"You are beyond useful, Rose," Devon just had to be the emotionally stable one, grabbing his hand. "And you know it. You’ve raised Orion for God knows how long before I came in. Protected him from the world to the best of your abilities before now."

The Guide looked away but Devon caught his chin between his index finger and thumb.

"I know you’re stressed out. Way too many things have been happening this past week." A pause. "But don’t let that make you undersell your worth for a second."

Ambrose’s jaw tightened.

He nearly rolled his eyes—but he’d be lying if he said that little speech didn’t tug at his heartstrings just a bit.

Seeing his partner calm again, Devon patted him once on the cheek before grabbing the driver’s seat door handle—

—And that’s when Ambrose sensed something he’d glossed over. Underneath the car was a box with a blinking red light. The moment the door opened just slightly... the blinking stopped.

Every hair on his body stood like he had been electrocuted. Time appeared to slow down, the overwhelming pressure of Death sense pressing against his chest like a weight.

"Back away from the car!" He grabbed Orion first, wrapping his arms around him before kicking his feet on the ground.

The motion propelled him back by several meters until he crashed onto the academy stairs. Civilians on the sidewalk scampered instinctively—all except Devon who moved too late.

BOOM!

A deafening explosion of red flames consumed the car, rising ten meters into the air and shattering the pavement around it. Ambrose closed his eyes, twisting his body in a way that forced Orion to look away.

Once it was over... dozens of car alarms went off, echoing from different parts of the street. Ambrose’s ears rang as his eyes batted open.

He snapped his neck to the aftermath, dread coiling around his heart like a python. The permanent link between them convulsed violently—fear crashing into Ambrose so hard it almost knocked the breath from him.

He searched through the flames and smoke for the S-Rank.

"D–Devon?!"
