Inside The Purple Rift

"Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck..." Corbin cursed repeatedly until he leapt out of the collapsing building. "FUCK!"

Fortunately one of his teammates stopped him from falling by coating his body with a thin layer of energy, helping him land perfectly on his feet.

Not like he wouldn’t have gotten out of that alive on his own anyway.

"Where are those fucking elves?" He groaned, his neck snapping to Trinity. "All that shit about Mason being ’claimed’ and now we’re being chased by a—"

The captain didn’t let him finish, spinning him to her before landing a resounding slap on his face. Corbin’s neck twisted so hard it cracked.

The others gasped as Trinity grabbed him by the collar. "Control yourself, goddamnit!" She sneered. "The elves clearly know more about what’s happening than we do. Whatever is doing that..."

She pointed at the building behind them.

Not only had it crumbled completely now but every last scrap—dust, debris and rocks—was being sucked into the earth by an unseen force.

CRUNCH. CRUNCH. CRUNCH.

Those monstrous chewing sounds echoed through the ruined city again.

Corbin swallowed with his heart in his stomach as Trinity went on.

"... It’s as much their enemy as it is ours." With that she let go of him, turning her attention to the rest of the team. "We’ll head to the buildings we last saw the elves in. Hopefully they haven’t run off too far."

The thought of it being a trap orchestrated by the elves slipped through her mind. But it was too much trouble.

Besides, they’ve more than noted that they could’ve killed them if they truly wanted to.

The group sprang out, sprinting toward the buildings with everything in them. More sickening crunches sounded behind them as cracks began erupting toward even more structures.

"Here!" A voice chirped from the top of one of the most intact buildings ahead just then.

They spotted that same female elf with long silver hair, crouching with her bow in hand. But she didn’t have any arrows drawn.

With a stomp, the stocky earth Esper made a huge mound of earth explode beneath the team. It shot them high until they landed on the rooftop.

The female elf rushed to them first while the others stood behind, apprehensive. "We wish to sincerely apologise about your friend again," Her eyes swept past each of them. "But as you can see you’ve crossed into its territory."

Corbin felt like pulling his hair out at this point. "What is IT? What are we up against? Is... is it the thing behind why this city is like a wasteland?"

"Corbin!" Someone scolded.

"It was only a question."

The silver-haired elf didn’t answer immediately. She gave Corbin a look that held for a beat too long, making him shift back a couple of steps.

But she had no business harming him.

"We have a hideout," she revealed, glancing back at the other elves. "At the... plaza."

One of the elves, the one with the thundering voice talking to them earlier, shot up in the elven tongue. "We can’t just bring the humans there. Their stupidity will be our doom."

Trinity didn’t catch what they meant but she could sure as hell pick up the hint of hostility in his tone.

She discreetly grabbed Corbin’s wrist, squeezing hard enough to let him know she didn’t want him talking anymore. Then she said:

"Please. All we need is your help in escaping whatever this monstrosity is."

The most annoying part was that when she looked at her compass-like device, she couldn’t see any large aether signatures that could at least make her guess the Rank of the creature.

Yet she knew it was definitely beyond S-Rank.

The silver-haired elf shut her eyes for the briefest second. She gave the elf who retorted another look—almost as though she was trying to telepathically reach him.

Finally, the guy groaned, cursing in the elven tongue before nodding.

"Very well." The silver-haired elf slung her bow over one shoulder. "Follow us. Do not separate. And no matter what happens..." Her pale gaze swept across every Hunter present. "If you hear your loved ones calling your name, do not answer."

The words landed like ice water over the group.

Corbin blinked. "What?"

But the elves had already started moving, not running across the streets but across the rooftops.

They leapt impossible distances, boots barely touching cracked stone before launching themselves toward the next building.

Their movements were graceful, practised—like people who had spent years learning exactly which places were safe to stand on.

"Move!" Trinity barked.

The Hunters followed.

Fortunately, several of them possessed movement skills, while the earth Esper continuously raised pillars beneath those who couldn’t jump as far. They crossed rooftop after rooftop, the ruined city blurring beneath them.

Then...

CRUUUNCH!

Nobody looked back.

Until the explosion forced them to.

A deafening rumble erupted less than three streets behind them.

An entire tower—one that had stood for centuries despite its cracked walls—lurched sideways.

Then it vanished entirely without a trace.

The foundations gave way as though some invisible mouth beneath the city had swallowed everything whole.

Stone. Metal. Ancient pillars.

Even the ash coating the streets spiralled downward into a widening sinkhole before the ground folded back over itself. Like nothing had ever existed there.

Corbin felt every hair on his body stand upright.

"What the fuck?" His voice cracked.

The silver-haired elf didn’t slow. "It has moved."

Another Hunter risked a glance. "Moved where?"

The answer came almost instantly.

CRUNCH.

This time it wasn’t behind them.

It was somewhere to their right.

Another district buckled.

Buildings folded inward like paper before disappearing beneath the earth.

Whatever existed beneath the city was actively hunting.

That realization hit Trinity like a freight train.

"It isn’t eating randomly..." she whispered.

The elf nodded once. "It follows life."

No one said another word after that.

The chase became frantic.

The elves darted through broken archways, over fractured bridges connecting rooftops and through narrow corridors suspended between crumbling towers.

Finally... A massive circular plaza appeared ahead.

Unlike every other section of the city, this place remained almost untouched.

Ancient white pillars surrounded an enormous stone dais engraved with thousands of glowing runes.

The silver-haired elf landed first. "We’re almost—"

Outside the Purple Rift.

Silence lingered after Kali’s revelation.

Gabriel remained staring at the purple membrane.

"So whatever attacked that Federation officer..." he murmured. "It devoured everything."

"Everything." Kali agreed quietly.

Wukong scratched the back of his neck. "See, that’s somehow worse."

Around them, dozens of Hunters maintained defensive positions while military personnel hurried civilians farther away.

Nobody wanted to get any closer to the Rift anymore.

Especially after witnessing someone reduced to ribbons before disappearing into it.

Gabriel folded his arms. "If we can’t enter and whatever’s inside can reach out... then—"

Kali’s pupils suddenly shrank. "Wait."

Her head snapped toward the Rift.

The purple surface pulsed once. Then again.

Much stronger this time.

Gabriel noticed it immediately. "It... It’s breathing faster."

The membrane expanded outward several inches before contracting again like lungs. Or a beating heart.

Wukong’s playful grin disappeared. "That wasn’t happening before."

"No." Kali took a slow step backwards. "Something has changed inside."

WHOOOM.

The Rift expanded again. Larger this time.

Its edges rippled violently as waves of distorted space rolled outward.

Federation personnel stumbled back.

Weapons were drawn.

Esper abilities activated.

The purple membrane became almost transparent for less than a heartbeat.

Just enough for everyone to see it.

A massive shadow was moving slowly, seeming like it was merely crossing behind the Rift.

Someone screamed. "What the hell is THAT?!"

No one answered because nobody knew.

But every instinct every Hunter possessed screamed the same thing.

Something was trying to breach!

Elsewhere...

[Host.] Aura’s cheerful voice rang inside Ambrose’s head. [Your daily reminder that running away is excellent cardio.]

"Oh, piss off."

Ambrose vaulted over another sandstone ridge, sweat dripping from his chin as the twin blue suns burned mercilessly overhead.

"You know," he panted, "I’d appreciate moral support for once."

[I am supporting you.]

"How?"

[You’re still alive, aren’t you?]

"Barely."

[DANGER.]

[Extinction Level Threat approaching.]

"Oh wow." He rolled his eyes while sprinting even harder. "Didn’t notice the cosmic horror chasing me."

[Distance decreasing.]

"Fantastic."

[Distance decreasing rapidly.]

"Even better." He risked one glance behind him.

The Void Entity floated several kilometres away.

It wasn’t walking or running. It simply drifted through the sky with terrifying inevitability.

Like distance meant nothing to it.

Then... It stopped.

Ambrose frowned. "Huh?"

The creature didn’t look at him anymore all of a sudden.

Instead, its featureless face slowly turned upward. Past the burning twin suns, past the clouds.

Past... The dimension itself.

Its miniature black hole spun faster.

"Interesting." The words echoed softly.

Without another glance toward Ambrose, the Void Entity abruptly changed direction.

It accelerated into the heavens, tearing through the sky at impossible speed before disappearing beyond the horizon entirely.

Ambrose remained frozen where he stood.

"... Okay." He blinked twice. "I don’t know what the fuck happened but I’m not complaining."

Yet one question echoed through his exhausted mind.

What had managed to steal the Void Entity’s attention?
