Outside The Purple Rift

"Stay back!" Gabriel stood in front of everyone else, eyes flashing. He stretched his hands toward the purple rift, creating a spatial lock around it.

A clench of his fists made the lock on space around the Rift even more constricting, forcing the expansion to slow down drastically.

The space god huffed. "Lord above," his neck spun to Kali and Wukong who didn’t stand far away from him. He whispered despite the yelling from the other Hunters. "Were any of you able to sense what that shadow was?"

Kali shook her head grimly. "Whatever it was it certainly isn’t the Void Entity," Her gaze cut to Wukong. "This has gone beyond what we first thought. Something tells me that thing is behind the consumption of the Federation official."

The Monkey King’s expression hardened. "A beast capable of eating people without coming out of the Rift sounds like a nightmare."

"That’s because it is," Kali murmured. "No matter what happens we can’t let this thing breach the Rift. This isn’t like the Void Entity. This thing isn’t after one person or one goal."

A rare dread coiled tight in her chest. "It’s merely carrying out a single option. To feed." A solemn light glinted in her eyes. "Which means all hope might be lost for the Hunter team."

She brought her attention to Gabriel. "How long can you keep that spatial lock for?"

Gabriel’s eyes wandered to the Rift. To the way purple strands of membranous energy shot out of it, hitting the edge of the crystallised spatial lock.

His teeth ground. "Two hours. Three if I give it my all."

"Then please give it your all," Kali nodded. "That should give us enough time to evacuate the nearby cities and think of a counter for this."

She put her hood back over her head, backing away. "Share the recent developments with the others. The Rift expanding means whatever is behind it is huge."

With that, she and Wukong left, drifting past the rows of Hunters and even past the barricades and armoured vehicles. Gabriel watched their receding figures with a heavy breath.

He pivoted back to the purple Rift, his fingers curling at the way the energies being released struggled to break the spatial lock.

"Heaven fucking help us..."

Meanwhile, within the purple Rift dungeon, half of the buildings the Hunters had either walked past or jumped on... had disappeared.

Nothing but dust and piles of rubble remained. The place was dead silent—if you ignored the resounding noises of something chewing heavily below the city.

But at the plaza the elves had taken the Hunters to, the runes shimmering above the open space glowed.

A deep silver radiance spilt across the ancient plaza, swallowing every elf and Hunter alike until the city itself vanished from sight.

The sensation wasn’t unlike stepping through water. Only colder.

The world twisted for the briefest heartbeat before solid ground greeted them once more.

Trinity blinked rapidly.

The ruined city was gone.

Instead, they stood inside an enormous underground chamber carved into black crystal and pale stone.

Towering pillars disappeared into a ceiling so high that darkness swallowed its end, while countless glowing runes floated overhead like miniature constellations, bathing everything beneath them in soft silver light.

Her gaze slowly swept across the vast cavern. Then her heart sank.

There were... people.

Children with pointed ears huddled together beneath blankets. Elderly elves sat quietly against crystal walls, exchanging whispered prayers while younger ones distributed baskets filled with dried fruit, mushrooms and strips of preserved meat.

Others carefully patched worn clothing, sharpened old weapons or filled jars from a spring that flowed through the middle of the chamber.

Not even a single laugh echoed here.

The silver-haired elf lowered her bow at last, exhaling through her nose.

"Welcome," she said softly, "to what remains of our kingdom."

The Hunters stared in silence.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The fear. The hostility. The desperation.

These people weren’t preparing for war. They were merely trying to stay alive.

Trinity felt something tighten painfully inside her chest. "How long have you all been living like this?"

Before the silver-haired elf could answer, the crowd gradually parted.

Every elf immediately lowered their head. Even the warriors.

A woman emerged from between them and although she wore no crown—it was clear from her presence alone that she didn’t need one.

Silver robes flowed behind her, embroidered with fading golden branches that had clearly once represented unimaginable prestige.

Long platinum hair cascaded down her back, while emerald eyes regarded the newcomers with centuries’ worth of exhaustion and authority.

The silver-haired elf immediately bowed. "Mother."

Trinity instantly understood.

The queen.

The ruler’s gaze swept over every Hunter before settling on her daughter. Then it shifted back.

"What," she asked, her voice calm enough to freeze blood, "are humans doing in my sanctuary?"

Trinity instinctively stepped forward. "We came because—" She never finished.

The Queen merely looked at her, causing an invisible pressure to explode through the cavern.

Every Hunter crashed onto one knee.

Corbin let out a grunt of pain while another Hunter dropped her weapon entirely, both arms trembling violently beneath the unbearable weight.

Trinity’s breathing became laboured. Her muscles screamed.

It felt as though a mountain had suddenly decided to rest upon their shoulders.

The Queen hadn’t lifted a finger, simply watching.

"Mother!" The silver-haired princess hurried between them. "They are not our enemies."

Only then did the Queen glance toward her daughter.

"They crossed into our world through a Rift," the princess continued quickly. "They did not know. They believed this was merely another beast-infested world."

Her expression softened with guilt. "And... I owed them."

The Queen raised an eyebrow at that.

"They lost one of their companions because of us." Her daughter added.

Silence lingered.

Then, with nothing more than a quiet sigh, the crushing pressure vanished. Every Hunter inhaled sharply as though surfacing from underwater.

Trinity steadied herself before slowly standing. "Thank you."

The Queen ignored the gratitude. She looked instead toward the invisible world above them.

"It was not always like this," she said quietly, voice melodious. "Our cities stretched beyond the horizon. Forests covered continents. Rivers carried life."

Pain flickered across her features. "Then it came."

"It devoured villages." Her voice remained composed despite the memories. "Then cities. It hunted the living first."

A pause.

"But eventually even our homes became food."

The Hunters exchanged uneasy glances.

"Millions perished," the Queen whispered. "This sanctuary... is all we have left."

The chamber fell deathly silent.

Then her emerald eyes settled on Trinity once more. "You say a Rift now connects our world to yours."

The Captain nodded. "Yes."

The Queen closed her eyes briefly.

When she opened them again, every trace of warmth had disappeared.

"Then pray your world is stronger than ours." Her voice echoed through the sanctuary.

"Because if that creature discovers Earth..." She looked toward the unseen surface above them. "...your people will not be facing an invasion. They will become its next meal."

Elsewhere.

Ambrose finally slowed to a stop.

The endless dunes had gradually given way to jagged mountains that pierced toward the twin blue suns overhead.

Massive cliffs cast welcome shadows across the desert floor, while countless cave openings dotted the rocky landscape like dark mouths waiting to swallow the careless.

"About damn time." His shoulders sagged with relief.

Ever since the Void Entity had abruptly abandoned its pursuit, he’d kept moving without pause, refusing to believe it wasn’t some elaborate trick.

Only now did he finally dare to breathe.

After choosing one of the larger caves, Ambrose stepped inside cautiously, conjuring a small flame over his palm.

The flickering light danced across rough stone walls.

He checked every corner.

"No giant spiders..." He moved deeper. "No oversized scorpions." Another glance upward. "And thankfully no nightmare bats either."

The only thing that greeted him was silence.

Satisfied, Ambrose finally allowed himself to collapse against the cave wall with a groan, stretching both aching legs in front of him.

"I’m officially exhausted."

For several long minutes, he simply sat there, listening to nothing except his own breathing.

Then reality returned.

"The key." His brows knitted together.

That damned black key could have landed absolutely anywhere after he’d shoved the Void Entity through the portal. Searching an entire dimension for something that small was already ridiculous enough.

Searching without the System’s tracking function? That bordered on insanity.

He rubbed both hands over his face. "And just what the hell distracted that thing?"

The image replayed inside his mind.

The Void Entity had stopped. It appeared to have sensed something beyond the dimension itself.

Something important enough to abandon the hunt.

"Earth?" He frowned. "No... that can’t be right."

If it’d returned to Earth, surely he’d have felt something through his permanent links.

He shook his head. "Pointless guessing."

Speculation wasn’t going to get him home. Only action would.

His eyes slowly drifted toward his system storage. "Guess I’ve got one option left."

With a thought, the familiar black mask materialised in his lap.

The smooth surface reflected neither light nor shadow, remaining unnaturally dark despite the flame floating beside him.

If anyone knew how to get out of this mess... It would be the version of him who had already lived through it.

"I seriously hope you aren’t about to waste my time." Ambrose let out a tired laugh before lifting the mask. "Because I’m fresh out of good ideas."

The cold material settled over his face.

Instantly, darkness swallowed everything.

His body slumped sideways against the cave wall as consciousness slipped away.
