A Week Later

BOOM!

"Orion, get back!"

Ambrose flicked his wrist, teleporting Orion behind him—just a second shy before the blast of a beast with laser eyes could strike him.

He pulled out Grave Keeper, twirling it around both hands before stamping the staff on the rocky earth.

Roaring several meters ahead was a bipedal beast.

It stood over ten feet tall, with freakishly long arms ending in claws, rubbery pitch-black skin, and a wide maw filled with rows of fangs like daggers. And glowing red eyes that emitted tongues of energy, ready to explode out yet again.

[You know, this is ridiculously reckless of you, right?] Aura scolded in his head for the millionth time. [You’re basically forcing the boy to fight—]

’No, I’m trying to teach him how to utilize his powers naturally. All he needs to do is imagine one of these freak shows no longer exists.’

For a few days now he’s been bringing Orion along with him during some of his raids in the dimensions the Black Key opened up for him.

Even without the system giving him any missions, he fought fiercely, clearing dungeon after dungeon and acquiring the cores of slain beasts for seduction coins.

All along, he’s encountered S-Rank beasts at most.

Today was very different.

"Daddy, I’m sorry," Orion mumbled behind him. "I’m trying really hard, but I’m... I’m not able to—"

Ambrose summoned hordes of phantoms, sending them as a distraction at the beast.

The latter screeched, swatting its claws around before blasting its lasers at the phantoms.

"Buddy, you have absolutely nothing to be sorry about." Ambrose squatted, gently brushing a thumb across his cheek. "You’ll get the hang of your powers eventually. But for now?"

He looked over his shoulder, his fingers tightening around Grave Keeper. That simple action summoned his army of undead and phantom orcs, including Beherath.

[ALERT: Eighty-seven Necrotic orcs are currently being kept stable by the host’s Aether reserves.]

They stood around Ambrose and Orion, pulling out their weapons and grinding their tusks against each other.

Ambrose slowly straightened, slipping out the Black Key.

"You’ll have to go back home while Daddy stays back to handle this." Adjusting the black mask, he opened a doorway shimmering with a bright white light. "Go." He turned to Orion. "That should lead you straight to the kitchen. Tell Uncle Viktor to give you that ice cream in the fridge."

Orion’s disappointed look instantly switched to pure glee. "Yay!" He wrapped his arms around his daddy’s waist. "Thanks, daddy. Please be careful."

"Oh, trust me." A dark blue light flickered behind those silver orbs. "Your daddy can handle himself just fine."

The second Orion crossed the doorway, and it shut behind him—aether exploded out of Ambrose, rising tens of meters into the sky in a burst of dark blue light.

[TARGETANALYSIS: SS-Rank Bipedal beast.]

[ABILITIES: Beastly physical prowess and the ability to conjure blasts of pure aether from its eyes.]

Frost and fire swirled around Grave Keeper, darkness spreading around him like a shroud.

The beast had just gotten rid of the last of the phantoms, growling as its gaze fixed on Ambrose and the army of undead orcs. Beherath huffed, looking toward Ambrose, awaiting his command.

"Attack at will."

"Uncle Viktor?"

Orion called the second the portal doorway shut behind him. He hopped through the living room, heading for the kitchen.

The time was past three PM.

His little brows furrowed.

"Is anyone home?" His voice rose a bit. "Hello?! Daddy said I can take ice-cream from the fridge."

No answer.

Shrugging, he got to the fridge and opened it himself. At the top row lay a box of ice-cream, waiting for his attention. He grinned, standing on his tippy toes.

Just when he brought it out of the fridge and shut it without a sound—he sensed something that made him pause.

Someone was standing right behind him.

And it wasn’t any of his uncles or Papa.

"Hello, little one."

The boy spun around slowly, golden eyes narrowing with suspicion. The person standing before him was a woman with violet eyes, covered in specks of similarly coloured light and draped in a silver dress that spilt onto the floor around her like a waterfall frozen in motion.

A calm smile touched her lips as she moved a foot forward.

"Are your papa and daddy around?"

Orion’s little fingers gripped the ice cream tighter, shaking his head. "I’m not supposed to be talking with strangers."

"I understand, little one. But your daddy and papa know who I am. I’m only here to talk."

"No."

"Hmm?"

"I don’t want to talk to you, lady."

The woman blinked with surprise.

She could easily tell where he got that bluntness from.

"Fine," she lifted her hands, attempting to earn the boy’s trust. "I’m just going to walk toward you slowly. Are you seeing me? No weapons or—"

"If you come any closer, I’ll scream," Orion warned. "Really loud."

"Little one—"

"My name is Orion." He corrected. "And I don’t want any strangers near me. Can you just go?"

"Orion—"

"Papa?! Uncle Viktor?!"

"Dear gods..."

Before she could take another step, space itself rippled in sync with the boy’s sharp cry. She picked up a fluctuation that made her snap her neck to the living room door behind her.

Right before her eyes, Devon and Viktor appeared out of thin air, both disoriented. They threw each other a confused look before their eyes swept over to the woman and Orion.

"Extraordinary." She muttered under her breath.

"Did Orion just teleport us?" Viktor asked while Devon was already waltzing to the kitchen.

It took a moment, but he was able to recognise the woman after taking a closer look.

"Kali?"

Her smile broadened. "Hunter Devon. Pardon my uninvited intrusion into your home. I won’t have done it if it weren’t... urgent."

Orion harrumphed. "Papa, this weird lady kept saying you and Daddy know her."

"We do, buddy." Devon pulled Orion into his arms, gently shoving him to his uncle waiting a few paces away. He squinted. "You said it’s... urgent?"

Kali’s mouth parted to answer when another voice echoed from the backyard door.

"Involving your son," Apollo’s invisibility faded as he pushed himself off the wall he’d been leaning against all this while. "And Ambrose Hale."
