Two Months Later, Hale-Ferguson Residence

By late August, many schools around the country had begun opening their doors for the new school year as summer slowly drew to a close.

Among those schools, of course, was Blue Diamond.

"Daddy, look!"

Ambrose had just finished adjusting his jacket when Orion chirped excitedly behind him. He glanced over his shoulder first before turning around fully, lips curling at what his boy was pointing at.

"I just tied my shoes on my own." Orion squealed, hopping with nearly every word he said. "I even got the loops papa used to tie right."

Ambrose’s smile turned proud. "That’s my boy." He gestured for Orion to give him a high five. But then a thought crossed his mind. "Orion—did you use your powers to tie your shoes?"

The kid only blinked at him with those big golden eyes at first.

Until Ambrose twisted his lips.

Orion’s cheeks reddened. "Yes."

"... So you still can’t tie your shoes on your own?"

"Hey! No fair. It’s harder than you think."

"Right." Ambrose kept his smile, unsure whether to laugh, cry, or do both.

The boy had the power to literally change the whole world with his imagination but could only control it enough to cheat at tying his shoes.

[Give the boy a break.] Aura scoffed. [Also, heads-up. I bought the permanent Aether booster just like you asked from yesterday’s kills. Are you certain you want to—]

’Yep. Channel it into Beherath.’ He straightened, grabbing Orion’s backpack from the kitchen countertop. ’He’s been at the very pinnacle of A-Rank beasts all this while. So he should be able to evolve easily to S-Rank.’

In two months, a few more things had changed. In his endless quest to level up, Ambrose had gotten his EP to a total of 345,000.

Which in hindsight seemed... absolutely staggering.

Yet to break through into an SS-Rank Aether Hybrid, he’d need exactly 400,000 total points in his EP. Which felt like a ripoff, seeing as most SS-Rank Espers only had about 100,000 or a bit more.

Still, he knew he was closer than ever to breaking through—hence why he decided to channel that aether booster to members of his ever-growing undead army.

"Rose?" Devon called from the entrance to the living room, snapping him back to reality. "Come on, let’s go. You boys can’t be late for the first day of school."

Orion put on his backpack, happily bouncing toward his papa. Then he paused just before he could step outside, a mischievous light playing in his eyes.

"Boy, if you make another ice-cream cone so early in the morning, I’m going to put you on timeout with Aunty Aura."

That warning wiped the smirk clean off the boy’s face. He hurried after his papa while Aura giggled.

[Looks like he’s still lacking in those self-control lessons.]

With a thought, Ambrose pulled up a screen showing the deterioration of the seal on Orion’s powers.

[SealIntegrity: 12%.]

He huffed, shutting the door behind him as he stepped into the morning sun rays falling onto their lawn.

Blue Diamond Academy

"Here we are."

Ambrose looked out the window once Devon’s car stopped in front of the school building. Students and parents alike went up the stairs, talking, saying their goodbyes or complaining about what they got for lunch.

His eyes swept past all that and fixed on something that made him subconsciously hold his breath.

A stone mural at the bottom of the steps.

On it were the words: "In Memory Of The Lives Taken By The Void"... Then below that was a list of every student, staff or even passerby who lost their lives during Guild master Dorothy’s attack on the school.

That hadn’t been there the last time he was here.

"Alright," Devon’s fingers drummed on the steering wheel. "You boys take care. I’ve gotta run. There’s an S-Rank gate in Washington, and somehow Phoenix Flight’s best has been called for the task."

Ambrose shook his head. "And there are gonna be people from other Guilds in it, huh?"

"Yep."

"Sounds like hell."

Orion was the first to hop out of the car, clutching his backpack tight. "Bye, papa!" He waved before his eyes flitted to Ambrose. "Come on, Dad. We’re gonna be late."

"Buddy, it’s still past seven AM." Ambrose sighed, a slight smile curling his lips as he swerved to Devon. "Good luck at work, babe."

"You too." The S-Rank pecked him on his cheek. "Show those parents and teachers who’s boss."

"You’re making it sound like they’re sworn enemies... but I love the enthusiasm."

Ambrose finally got out before their son could throw a riot. Taking Orion’s little hand in his, he ascended the stairs, cutting a quick look at himself via his phone’s screen.

Satisfied that his hair wasn’t sticking out in every direction for once, he slipped the phone back into his pocket.

The moment they stepped onto the stairs, conversations noticeably slowed.

Some recognised him as the father of the boy Dorothy kidnapped. Others whispered about seeing him on television beside Devon or during the PTA meetings over the summer.

A few children even nudged one another before pointing excitedly in his direction.

His charm aura wasn’t even active.

Or... At least not intentionally.

As one mother happened to lock eyes with him while walking her daughter inside, her cheeks flushed almost instantly. She fumbled the water bottle she was holding, nearly dropping it before laughing awkwardly at herself.

Another parent wasn’t much better.

"Oh... um... good morning."

"Morning," Ambrose answered politely.

The poor woman completely forgot what she’d been about to tell her son.

"Mom?" The little boy asked.

"Hm? Oh! Right. Go to class."

Ambrose sighed under his breath. ’Seriously... passive charm aura should’ve come with an on-and-off switch.’

Orion giggled. "Daddy, I think that lady thinks you’re pretty."

"...Let’s pretend you never said that."

After dropping Orion off with his classmates—and enduring one final dramatic hug that earned a chorus of "Awws" from nearby parents—Ambrose headed toward the academy’s largest training hall.

The discussions over the summer had gone surprisingly well.

The board hadn’t just approved his proposal.

They’d placed him in charge of the entire initiative, overseeing a select group of teachers tasked with helping young Guides and Espers safely understand and control their abilities before they became dangerous.

He reached the double doors, taking a long breath.

Then he pushed them open.

Ambrose froze.

Standing in the middle of the hall, chatting casually with the principal as though he belonged there... was Augustus.

[Oh, shucks. Not this guy again.]

The S-Rank Disciplinary enforcer of Phoenix Flight.

What the fuck was he—

"Guide Ambrose." Someone else thundered from another end of the room, voice carrying pure authority.

It’s been months.

Yet he recognised that voice from anywhere. It belonged to literally the last person he ever expected to see again.
