Washington DC

"Of course, you two are also here." The first words that came out of Viktor’s mouth when he stepped down from his car before the S-Rank Rift.

The people he spoke to were none other than Devon and Alisha, the latter arching a brow when she turned to the ice Prince.

"Nice seeing you too, snowman." She smirked, taking a step to the side so Viktor could squeeze himself between her and Devon. "Looks like Guild master Magnus was right. Some of Aurelia’s best S-Ranks were summoned for this."

Around them was a busy street only a few hundred yards away from the white house—and the street wasn’t ’busy’ because of traffic.

On the contrary, buildings around had been evacuated, including the white house itself. Several other streets nearby, especially those that connected with this one, were also shut down.

And that’s all thanks to the large tear in space-time, leaking short but ferocious bursts of white aether energy.

Other Hunters from Aurelia and Washington—Guides and Espers alike—were gathered around, whispering, preparing weapons or taking pre-guiding pills just in case.

Viktor and Devon were among the latter group.

’How does it feel embarking on such a serious mission with no Guide—’ Devon had barely finished speaking in Viktor’s head when the ice Prince jolted back.

’Fuck.’ He cursed. ’Damn it, Devon. I’m still not used to you or the others using that telepathy trick.’

One of the many perks of Ambrose’s Vessel Of The Five was its ability to intertwine all his links, enabling those connected to communicate telepathically amongst themselves.

"Alright, Hunters!"

A shrill voice called out from the very forefront of the gathered Hunters, bringing instant decorum.

All heads turned.

The voice belonged to a woman who, for lack of a better term in Devon’s head... looked absolutely fierce.

Lush black hair tied up in a ponytail. Form-fitting black suit and pants. And a pair of clear glasses—a fashion choice rather than a medicated one.

"Yikes." Trina inched forward, standing beside Alisha. "That’s the new Federation Vice President. Genevieve."

"Oh, Josiah finally picked a new one?" Viktor clicked his tongue. "Sad. My mother was eyeing that seat after Hillary’s unfortunate demise."

"She’s been in the seat for a month, actually," Alisha confirmed with a cautious whisper. "And I’ve heard she’s even sterner than Hillary."

"Excuse me." Genevieve’s eyes locked on their group before anyone else could even think of speaking. "Are you here to chit-chat or to clear a dungeon Rift?"

Silence.

Trina rubbed her neck awkwardly while the others kept their heads high, expressions taut with an almost grim seriousness. Seeing this, Genevieve nodded once before her attention spread out to everyone else.

"Here’s what we know about this Rift so far," she began. "It opened approximately two hours ago. Every non-Awakened pedestrian and driver within the vicinity at that point has been taken to Federation-funded health facilities. This particular Rift appears calmer in terms of aether output, so we’re hoping that means the concentration of beasts there is at a minimum."

Devon could already feel a good old ’but’ coming in.

He was right.

"... However, you still have to be careful once you get in. We’ve seen too many cases of Rifts, especially the S-Rank ones, turning out to be something far worse than the Federation originally classified. Don’t try to be a hero. If the situation in there is too difficult, either send a few of you back with reports... or retreat entirely. This is the nation’s capital. When you go in there, go in with the thought that we can’t afford a dungeon break or worse."

Viktor blew a breath out of his mouth. "Doesn’t sound terrifying at all."

Alisha elbowed him discreetly. "Oh, come on. When’s the last time you feared for your life in a mission like this?"

"You’ve got no idea..."

"Now that we’re all clear," Genevieve clasped her hands once, "shall we begin?

Blue Diamond Academy

While Devon, Viktor, Alisha and Trina were about to embark on what could be one of the most serious missions in their career... Ambrose was in the middle of something absolutely perilous himself.

Arguably one of the most impossible tasks on the planet:

Working with children.

"Hey, kids." Ambrose beamed with the brightest smile he could muster, waving at the Esper and Guide children trooping into the training hall. "Welcome, welcome..."

Positioned around the room were the teachers he’d picked to be a part of this program. Beside him was Augustus, who couldn’t stop himself from stealing occasional glances at the Guide.

"Daddy." Orion slipped past all the children, running to his father. "Daddy, is this that thing you were talking about during the summer?"

Ambrose patted his cheek. "Yes, it is, little light." With a gentle shove, he sent him running back. "Go join the rest of your friends, okay?"

As Orion skipped to his peers, Augustus angled his head to Ambrose. Then back to the kid.

Before now, he was aware of the Guide having a child somehow.

But seeing their interaction first-hand was just—

"Got anything you want to tell me, Hunter Augustus?" Ambrose finally couldn’t pretend to not notice the not-so-subtle glances.

He snapped his neck to the S-Rank, eyes narrowed with harmless curiosity.

Augustus flinched, mouth opening and closing. "What? Oh... no. N-No, there’s nothing." He clenched a fist to calm himself. "I’m fine. I don’t have anything—"

"That’s great." Ambrose’s smile broadened. "I gotta address the kids now."

He didn’t wait for a response, spreading out his arms when the children eventually gathered themselves in organised rows in the middle of the hall.

Spatial awareness gave him a likely estimate of their numbers.

Thirty-four Esper and Guide children in this school alone—which was indeed a minority when the total population of children was over two hundred.

The hall naturally fell quiet, all heads moving in his direction as he continued.

"Forgive the fact that this special class is taking place after recess." He wore an apologetic look. "But don’t worry. Today is going to be filled with all sorts of fun, engaging activities that’ll train your minds and abilities. Whether you decide to become a Hunter in the future or not... I want you to leave this hall daily, more self-aware and better than when you first walked in today."

He looked over at one of the teachers who gave a nod.

Ah.

Perfect.

"Enough boring talk." He folded his arms in front of his chest. "Let’s begin."
