Washington DC

"Phew. I’m nervous as hell."

"You’re telling me."

Viktor and Devon both exchanged a look.

The ice Prince adjusted his snow-white gloves while the redhead sheathed his black sword after briefly brandishing it. Alisha and Trina both prepped themselves as well—every other Hunter waiting for Vice President Genevieve’s signal.

After what felt like forever, she moved away from the Rift, typing something in her tablet.

"Hunters—you can now go in. Good luck, stay safe... and Godspeed."

The Hunters didn’t dare charge in.

All fifteen of them walked past the Rift one by one, the few Espers with permanent guides making sure to hold theirs close. That included Alisha, whose fingers tightened around Trina’s fist.

"Let’s do this."

They both crossed the Rift, a burst of white light swallowing them.

Viktor snapped his neck before running headfirst, Devon following with no hesitation.

Nothing could’ve prepared them or anyone else for what happened next.

Space and time warped.

The world shifted, then tilted, then spun as though they’d ventured into a crazy amusement park ride.

"Whoa!"

Devon landed onto snow-filled ground with a heavy thud barely a few seconds later. He knew it was snow because the shit filled his mouth after landing, cold biting into his bare palms.

"Well, that was a rough landing." He groaned, blinking a couple times before pushing himself off the ground. "Any of you guys—"

He froze.

Stretched around him were trees without leaves, more mounds of snow pouring over the current layer. But that wasn’t what made him pause.

"Viktor?" He called out, head turning left, right and even backwards in search of the others. "Alisha?! Literally... anyone else?"

Silence was all that answered him.

He straightened, shaking off snow from his full-body black suit. "Shit. Did the Rift drop us off in different—"

A faint tremor beneath his boots sealed his lips instantly.

Another followed, spreading across miles of the terrain.

Carefully, he moved his neck to a cluster of trees to his left where he could’ve sworn the tremors seemed to cover the most. This one stayed for several seconds, not causing any damage but messing with his footing.

Then it stopped.

Birds flew out of the woods in waves, cawing and chirping as though warning themselves. The cacophony of their cries made Devon take a few steps back.

That’s when it happened.

In the midst of the trees he’d been staring at moments ago... several glowing eyes opened simultaneously, all locking on him.

Ambrose waited until every child had settled into rows of seats at one side of the hall before clasping his hands together once.

The chatter gradually died down, curious eyes fixed on him while Augustus folded his arms near a wall, silently observing every little detail.

"Alright." Ambrose smiled warmly. "First things first—I need everyone to be honest with me."

Several children straightened instinctively.

"I’ve got a question." He slowly raised his own hand. "How many of you have accidentally broken something because of your powers?"

For a second nobody moved.

Then one hand rose.

Within moments nearly three-quarters of the hall had their hands in the air.

Ambrose couldn’t stop himself from laughing.

"Excellent." He pointed at a freckled little girl near the front. "You first."

She shrank a little. "I... um... froze my mommy’s soup."

"Accidentally?"

"Yes."

"Fair enough." He nodded before pointing elsewhere. "You?"

A chubby boy scratched his head. "My lightning came out when my sister stole my toy. Daddy’s TV exploded."

Laughter rippled across the room.

Another child proudly announced, "I made flowers grow through our bathroom floor."

"My telekinesis threw Grandpa’s magazines into the fish tank."

"I accidentally linked to my cousin for three whole minutes."

One confession became another until the entire hall was buzzing with embarrassed giggles and dramatic retellings of household disasters.

Even Augustus found the corner of his mouth twitching upward.

Ambrose eventually lifted a hand, settling everyone again.

"See?" His silver eyes swept across them. "None of you are weird. None of you is broken. And most importantly... Your powers aren’t the problem." He tapped lightly against his chest. "They’re only reacting to what’s happening inside here."

He pointed toward his head next.

"When you’re scared your powers get scared."

Several little heads nodded.

"When you’re excited... they become excited."

More nods.

"When you’re angry..." He smiled knowingly. "Sometimes the nearest television doesn’t survive."

That earned another wave of laughter.

"The goal of this programme isn’t to make stronger Hunters." His tone softened. "Some of you might grow up wanting normal jobs. Teachers. Doctors. Artists. Bakers. And that’s perfectly okay."

He paused.

"My job is simply to make sure your powers never control you. So for today’s lesson we’re going to do something incredibly difficult."

All the children leaned forward expectantly.

"We’re going to... breathe."

Groans instantly echoed throughout the room.

"That’s boring!"

"I already know how!"

Ambrose chuckled. "Do you? Then let’s see."

He guided them through the exercise patiently, asking everyone to close their eyes, inhale slowly and imagine their happiest memory. Around the hall, tiny sparks of aether began flickering into existence.

One little Esper accidentally released dancing sparks of yellow energy around his fingers before quickly yelping.

Another child’s feet lifted an inch off the ground.

Leaves suddenly burst through cracks in the wooden floor beneath a smiling little Esper.

A faint gust swept across the hall, scattering loose worksheets through the air.

Instead of panicking, Ambrose calmly walked between them.

"Don’t fight it." His voice remained gentle. "Acknowledge it."

The energy sparks shrank. The floating child slowly descended. The wind weakened.

From the corner of the room, Augustus watched every interaction with growing disbelief.

There were no punishments or shouting and absolutely zero fear.

Yet somehow it was working.

Ambrose, meanwhile, couldn’t help but smile. ’This is such a good sign for our first day.’

[I guess.] Aura chimed. [You’re basically doing all the work though. Don’t you think it’s time you brought in some of the other teachers to—]

Blue sparks erupted wildly around the hands of one of the children, making her stumble back until she fell butt-first to the ground.

’... Uh-oh.’

Across the room, another boy’s shadow stretched across the floor.

A third child’s telekinesis sent several foam practice balls shooting into the air simultaneously.

The disturbances spread like dominoes around the hall.

Augustus instinctively stepped forward.

However, before he or Ambrose could even react... Everything stopped.

Literally.

The blue sparks vanished. The wind calmed. The shadows withdrew. The floating practice balls drifted harmlessly back to the floor.

Every unstable ability simply settled.

Orion blinked from where he stood among the children, looking around with innocent confusion.

"Huh?"

Ambrose’s eyes immediately widened. ’Please tell me Orion isn’t the one neutralising their powers right now.’

Meanwhile, Augustus stared at the little boy, his brows slowly knitting together.

’What in the world just happened?’
