Elsewhere In the S-Rank Snow Dungeon

"Hello?! Anyone out there?!"

"Shit, don’t tell me we’re the only ones who walked through that Rift."

"Nah. I could’ve sworn I saw Hunter Viktor and the others running after us."

Two Hunters, one S-Rank Esper and one A-Rank Guide, had been dropped off on a snow-covered hill. The snow falling was thicker than even what Devon currently had to deal with.

The S-Rank dusted snow off her shoulders, pulling out a device that resembled a smartphone.

"I’m calling Mark."

"Would that even work here?" The A-Rank rubbed the back of his neck, groaning. "Ugh. That was a nasty ass fall. I’m gonna need a massage after this."

Ignoring her partner, the S-Rank lifted the device into the air, waving it around all in hopes of getting a signal. It worked by using batteries that utilised aether to make connections from one device to another.

Sadly, even with all that, the signal was eerily weak, forcing her to drop her arm in frustration.

"Fuck." She shook her head. "We need to find the others. Anyone at all."

"The others?" The Guide scoffed. "At this rate we should just find the Rift and get the hell out of here. Remember what the vice president said?"

"Oh, okay." A sarcastic smile pulled at her lips as she gestured to the endless terrain around them. "Lead the way then. Can you point us to where the Rift could be through all this snow?"

"April—"

"No, we can’t, God damnit!" She snapped, lips shuddering. If it weren’t for her S-Rank physiology, she’d be an ice sculpture by now. "Let’s stick together, find the others, then we can get a better survival chance when it’s time to find the Rift."

The A-Rank was about to say something, but she’d already begun moving, the snow covering just inches shy of her knees despite her height.

He blinked for only a couple of seconds before quickly trailing behind her. "Hey, slow down!"

As they descended from the hill, holding onto each other so they wouldn’t get lost in the snowstorm... a presence watched them from the thick covering of trees down below.

This wasn’t one of the tree monsters that had attacked Devon.

But they hid under the shadows, weapons kept in a position that would be easy to pull out when necessary.

Blue Diamond Academy

"My energy balls!" A boy yelled victoriously from one end of the hall as a shimmering ball of blue energy formed between his hands. "You guys, look! My powers are working again."

"Oh, my God!" Another kid practically slumped into her seat, twirling a mini tornado between her fingers. "It’s true. My powers are back too!"

Ambrose let out the most silent breath of relief, a hand on his chest.

He’d just spent two gruelling minutes getting Orion to concentrate and imagine what happened before everyone temporarily lost their powers.

Then he managed to make him bring them back with zero hiccups... or, at least he hoped there weren’t any.

Aura pulled up the familiar screen before him.

Ambrose’s shoulders sagged.

Thank God.

For one terrifying moment, he’d genuinely feared the seal would’ve deteriorated even further after Orion unconsciously neutralised the powers of over thirty Awakened children and an S-Rank Esper all at once.

Maybe the situation wasn’t as catastrophic as he’d imagined.

That thought had barely settled in his head when the screen flickered again.

His breath caught. "What?"

His fingers curled involuntarily.

It had still dropped another whole percent.

At this rate—

"You were right." Augustus’ voice snapped him back before his thoughts could spiral any further.

The S-Rank approached with considerably less tension than before, though traces of unease still lingered across his face.

"Everyone’s abilities have returned."

Ambrose forced a smile. "I told you."

"Yes." Augustus stopped barely a step away. "But... how did you know that was going to happen?"

Silence lingered between them.

Ambrose glanced toward Orion.

"Buddy." He ruffled the little boy’s hair. "Go play with your friends for a bit."

Orion nodded obediently before jogging toward the other children, who’d already resumed comparing powers as though nothing unusual had happened.

Only after making sure the boy was a safe distance away did Ambrose turn fully toward Augustus.

His smile became almost innocent.

"I made a guess."

"A... guess?"

"Well," Ambrose shrugged casually, "I figured the breathing exercise might’ve affected everyone subconsciously. Maybe it interrupted how they were circulating their aether."

Augustus stared. "That doesn’t make any sense."

"Doesn’t it?"

"No." He shook his head firmly. "It’s just a breathing exercise. Besides..." His brows furrowed. "It affected me too."

Ambrose clicked his tongue sympathetically.

"Well..." His lips curved into a teasing grin. "I guess that’s a sign you need more control too."

Augustus opened his mouth, yet nothing came out.

Ambrose chuckled under his breath before turning to leave.

Unfortunately... the S-Rank grabbed his wrist before he could move two steps.

"Guide Ambrose, wai—"

The world froze all of a sudden.

A violent surge of emotions crashed into Ambrose through two separate Links.

Pain. Fear. Confusion.

The unmistakable instinct to survive.

His silver eyes widened.

Devon and Viktor.

Something had gone horribly wrong inside the S-Rank Rift.

Without even thinking, Ambrose effortlessly slipped his wrist free from Augustus’ grip, making the Esper stumble back.

For the briefest fraction of a second, Augustus felt it.

Something that made every instinct inside him scream to create distance from the Guide standing before him.

Cold sweat gathered across Augustus’ back.

Still Ambrose didn’t spare him another glance.

He hurried straight toward Orion, scooping the confused little boy into his arms before facing the other teachers.

"I’ve got a family emergency." His tone left no room for debate. "Please continue today’s programme. Hunter Augustus can oversee things until I’m back."

Orion blinked.

"Daddy?" He wrapped both arms around Ambrose’s neck. "Why am I leaving school so early?"

Ambrose forced a reassuring smile that never quite reached his eyes. "A lot of reasons, buddy."

All the while, his gaze never left the glowing screen hovering before him.
