"Okay, so I’m in trouble," Viktor said after failing to summon aether for the umpteenth time.

The stranger who saved—abducted him—just watched, expression not giving a clue on what they could be thinking.

Viktor couldn’t tell if they were male, female, or otherwise because they had on a cloak that only made their lips and nose visible.

Sitting up on the bed, he tried moving his legs... and finally noticed something. Clamped around his right ankle was a bracelet with a glowing icy blue stone on it.

Anytime he reached for his aether, the glow would intensify, blocking it.

How he hadn’t noticed before now was beyond him.

"It appears I’d have to bring the tribe’s mage to speak to him." The stranger murmured in that thick, grating language Viktor couldn’t grasp for the life of him.

They stared for a couple more seconds before walking away, leaving the ice Prince sitting in the room alone.

A sigh slipped past his lips. "Fuck. I need to try reaching out to Devon."

His aether might be blocked, but perhaps the telepathy of Vessel Of The Five was still active.

He closed his eyes, searching for Ambrose’s link with him. However, before he could skim through the link and claw his way to Devon’s mind... he felt something that made him pause.

"Wait." His eyes shot wide open. "Ambrose?"

The permanent link pulsed strongly. Too strongly—sending waves of the Guide’s emotions to him.

It could only mean one thing.

"He’s here?" He looked toward the room’s entrance, torn between relief and hope that his little bird remained safe out there.

Then his gaze dragged to the bracelet around his ankle.

That... was a problem.

If Ambrose, Devon or anyone else was coming for him, he didn’t want to be a liability.

Fuck no.

Stretching a hand, he tugged with gritted teeth. The bracelet didn’t budge, staying closed around his ankle as if it was made to be there.

’What kind of metal is this?’ He scowled. ’Come on... get off—’

’Viktor?’

He froze.

’Viktor, are you there?’ Ambrose called through the link again, his voice sharper now. ’Please, just tell me you’re okay.’

’I am.’ Viktor replied quickly before the Guide could get any more worried. ’Ambrose, you’ve got no idea how good it is to hear your voice right now.’

’Well, I can imagine.’ Ambrose sounded beyond relieved. ’I have Beherath tracking you right now. Where are you?’

The S-Rank’s brows furrowed at that.

Beherath?

He’d barely pondered the possibilities the orc king’s presence would entail when he heard it.

Approaching footsteps crunching through the snow outside. Whoever it was said something incoherent before pushing the door all the way in.

A tall bearded male covered in shimmering white and blue robes stepped in, the stranger from earlier sticking close behind him.

Viktor subconsciously shifted on the bed, jaw ticking.

’I have no clue... but I—’

"Human." When the man opened his mouth, what came out was English. There was a glow in his eyes as he continued. "State your purpose in our world."

Those eyes moved to the ankle bracelet.

"And I implore you to not try anything immeasurably stupid like attempting to escape." He kept his arms behind his back, lumbering forward. "For your own good."

Viktor gulped, eyes darting from the man to the stranger.

"Mne Pizda."

Somewhere Else In The Snow Dungeon

"This should be a good spot."

Alisha grunted, helping Devon rest against a large tree surrounded by shrubs. Thanks to the tree still having most of its leaves, they were shaded from the harsh snow.

Devon sat with a heavy huff.

He ground his teeth, clutching his chest.

His ribs still hurt like hell from the attack those tree monsters made on him. In fact, before he and Alisha stopped here, they had to double-check to be sure it wasn’t going to try killing them.

Luckily, it was just a regular tree.

"This place is fucking insane." Alisha sat as well after successfully scanning the place for beasts. Her head turned to him. "How are you feeling?"

"Well," he chuckled, rasping when his ribs basically screamed in agony. "Everything above my waist feels like shit, and I’ve got a headache for the first time in months."

The sound type smiled wryly. "At least you’re alive." She was going to fist bump his shoulder... until she realised that would be a bad idea. "You should be all healed up soon enough."

"Right." Devon winced, deciding to let go of his chest. "This isn’t normal. There shouldn’t be so many S-Rank beasts in a single S-Rank dungeon."

"The whole team getting separated wasn’t enough clue that this mission is fucked?"

"Yeah... that too." He raised his head, squinting at the thick covering above them. "So you really haven’t gotten any signs of Trina?"

Alisha’s face turned sullen.

She rested her head against the sturdy bark, exhaling through her mouth.

"All I’m certain of is that she’s alive." Her fists clenched. "For now, at least."

"Hey, don’t say that."

"She’s only a B-Rank Guide, Devon." She bit her bottom lip. "I’m being realistic. Unless she somehow found someone else to stick with out there, she’s probably at the bottom of the fucking food chain here."

Devon had the urge to say something to comfort her. To reassure her that nothing would happen to her partner.

Yet he couldn’t think of anything, no matter how hard he tried. Plus, it felt pointless anyway.

She was right.

Even as S-Ranks, they both couldn’t guarantee their own safety.

Alisha got to her feet just then, neck snapping left and right. "If I could just concentrate past this snowstorm, I should be able to pick up sounds that’ll lead us to the others."

She took off her headphones, eyes shutting.

Devon remembered something.

Maybe he could try reaching out to Viktor.

’Devon.’ A familiar presence slipped into his head through his permanent link. ’Babe, it’s me. I’m in the dungeon.’

For a few seconds Devon couldn’t even breathe. Something warm spread through his chest as he adjusted himself against the tree.

’Rose. You—’

’Get out of there.’

Devon stiffened. ’...What?’

’Something is above you.’
