United States Hunters Deliberation Chamber, Geneva Summit Complex

"Aura." Ambrose rushed to the AI the second the doors opened, letting her into the secluded hall. "Gods, there you guys are."

Just like Council Speaker Aileen mentioned, every Federation in attendance at the Grand Conclave were assigned ’chambers’ to come up with a joint conclusion on what they’d be voting for.

In the corner of the United States, the Hunters were Ambrose, Devon, Viktor, Magnus, Valentine and President Josiah. Irina and Gabriel both had to head to the Russian and Canadian Federation chambers, respectively.

Despite the lives they’d built in America, both still officially represented their home Federations at the Grand Conclave.

Both SS-Ranks were already on board with Ambrose’s and the Pantheon’s bid to begin communication with civilisations within Rifts.

They just had to get their respective home countries to buy into the idea too.

The private chamber was large, painted white and lit up by a few majestic chandeliers that glittered like mini galaxies.

Alongside a round table at the centre, there was also an entire wall covered in reinforced see-through black glass as well as black sofas, a couple of fridges and other things to make them comfortable.

Valentine stood before the glass wall; Viktor had his eyes fixed on the big screen TV at the corner, and Devon joined Ambrose to welcome Aura and Orion.

"It’s like an apocalypse out there." Aura’s expression was grim, her grip finally loosening off Orion’s hand. "My scanners are picking up hundreds of anomalies worldwide. Each city and territory has its own—"

"Aura," Ambrose raised a palm, also trying to get himself to keep a level head. "Breathe. Let’s start from the top. From when you got the timeline breach alert."

Devon jumped in before she could get out a word. "I’m sorry," they both turned to him. "Timeline breach? Are the Archons here? Like on Earth?"

"That’s what I’m trying to explain," Aura shook her head, a hand propped on her waist. "My scanners can’t pick up any huge foreign power source as of right now. Whatever is causing this still hasn’t gotten to Earth."

"But they’re definitely within this timeline and this universe." Ambrose pulled in a shuddering breath. "We need—"

"Daddy?" Orion, who’d been too busy devouring what was left of his ice cream, finally announced his existence. "Those... bad people." His voice dropped. "I think one of them has found me."

Ambrose cut Aura and Devon a glance. He lowered himself to grab the boy, quietly shifting him away from them.

"I know, buddy." He held both shoulders, crouching to his level. "Daddy and the other adults are handling it, okay? You’ve got nothing to worry about. Remember what I told you?"

When those big golden eyes avoided his gaze, he caught his chin gently, lips stretching in a reassuring smile.

"Together. Always." He whispered. "Your family’s not gonna let anything happen to you. Okay?"

Orion nodded slowly.

Just when Ambrose was in the middle of straightening his posture, a voice boomed from the sliding double doors.

"Hunter Ambrose," Magnus strode in, arms behind his back, features drawn taut. "I’m led to believe you might have a better understanding of the anomalies hitting every corner of the planet simultaneously."

[Oh, boy...] Aura spoke in his mind. [I guess it’s too late for me to jump into your head now.]

’Just act natural and don’t say a word.’ Ambrose’s chest heaved as he met the older man’s sharp gaze. "I might be as clueless as the next person, sir."

Magnus’ mouth parted—

"Nonsense." That unfortunately wasn’t said by him.

Trailing close behind was President Josiah, a small smile that was anything but friendly playing across his lips.

Ambrose’s demeanour immediately became sterner. "Pardon?"

"I mean, you clearly have the better experience on everything happening in our world right now. So much so that Hunter Kali herself seems to respect your input."

"Josiah—" Magnus attempted to stop him, but the man merely waved dismissively.

Valentine swerved his head to him, eyes moving carefully between him and Ambrose. Viktor also pulled his attention from the television, noticing the increased tension.

[Someone seems pissed about something.]

’His ego.’ Rose gave a mental snort. ’I guess President high and mighty didn’t like me opposing his views so verbally.’

"Do we have a problem, President Josiah?" He deadpanned, subtly pushing Orion to Devon’s waiting hands.

The President only stopped walking when he was a couple of feet away from his face. His hands slipped into his pockets, jaw flexing despite his otherwise calm expression.

This Hunter thought things were so easy, huh? That he could just openly oppose his views in front of hundreds of his peers.

Well—

"On the contrary, Hunter Hale." His smile remained strained. "I’m guessing now that we’re all here we should just skip formalities and decide to follow whatever decision you make, right? Seeing as you’ve become very influential rather quickly. One might even think the Pantheon values your opinion more than the Federation’s leadership."

"Josiah, this is ridiculous." Magnus barked, forehead creasing. "Hunter Ambrose wasn’t the only one standing with the motion of extraterrestrial communication."

"No, but he was the only one who made it a point to embarrass me," Josiah didn’t beat around the bush anymore. "You made your thoughts known without making me look a fool. So did Hunter Viktor. He on the other—"

"Made you look a fool?" Ambrose repeated those words with pure mockery. "With no due respect, sir, but that should be on you. All I did was express an opinion which Hunter Kali and Apollo also shared, mind you. Council Speaker Aileen would’ve silenced me if my opinion wasn’t welcome."

Josiah’s eyes darkened.

Valentine sniggered while Viktor took careful steps closer.

[Emotions seem to be high. Are you certain you’d want things to escalate?]

’I don’t give a shit. I’ll teleport his ass to Antarctica. Maybe then he can cool off a bit.’

Right when Josiah lifted a finger—

"Enough!" Magnus snapped, eyes blazing like twin stars going supernova. "Both of you. This is no time to argue amongst ourselves like damn children."

That got everyone’s attention, including Valentine, who was hoping for Josiah to embarrass himself further.

The old Guild master pointed at the news playing on the big screen. "We have minutes. Minutes to make a decision and start preparing for whatever is coming for us."

Silence.

Ambrose’s fists balled.

Josiah inched a step back, his previous anger gradually disappearing.

Seeing that they’d all calmed down, Magnus huffed. "Now," his eyes moved past everyone’s faces, "we all heard what people had to say in that hall."

His shoulders loosened by just a bit.

"If we’re making a decision, we need to lay down all our cards and look at the angles from both sides. Enough wasting time."
