’Wait... what?’

’Yeah, I was as surprised as you were.’ Loki said in Ambrose’s head as the latter filed into the Grand Hall alongside hundreds of other delegates across different Federations. ’It feels so sudden—but at the same time, not really. Ever since Orion disappeared that one time and saw one of those Arch—’

’No, no... I’m not talking about Kali confirming the Archons being here,’ Ambrose rolled his eyes. ’Aura already updated me on that.’

’... Oh.’

’Yes. What I’m referring to is Thoth theorising that they’re after something or someone,’ Even he was stumped. ’And you said before now the guy always kept to himself?’

’Yep. We haven’t really filled him in about how your soul is from a different universe,’ an awkward smile curved Loki’s lips from their booth. ’Yikes. I don’t know what his reaction would be to that.’

’It might be best to keep him out of the loop for now,’ Ambrose settled onto his seat alongside the other United States delegates. ’Talk to you after this.’

’Stay sharp, Rose.’

The sound of Council Speaker Aileen’s gavel striking the centre podium instantly filled the rowdy hall with silence. People adjusted into their seats, ceasing their murmurings and theories.

Seeing this, Aileen straightened. "Hunter Apollo," she went straight to business. "For what reason did the Pantheon suddenly decide the time for deliberation was unnecessary?"

Many heads swerved to his booth as it lit up with a faint golden light.

The SSS-Rank took a moment before speaking. "Minutes ago, when Hunter Kali was... silent during our discourse," a pause, "she got a vision. And to cut a long story short, one of the entities we warned you about has slipped its way into our universe as we speak."

Stunned gasps echoed through the hall.

Ambrose huffed, placing a hand on his forehead. ’Viktor, did you manage to get to your mom and confirm if Russia is on board with—’

’Nope.’ The ice Prince replied quickly. ’Sorry. Everything happened so fast I didn’t even find the time to send her a text.’

Gabriel and Irina were now both sitting with their respective country’s delegates. Ambrose had some hope the space god would be able to convince the rest of Canada to comply.

But Russia... dear lord.

Not to mention there were still over a hundred nations to think about.

’It’s fine.’ He finally answered Viktor, attention drifting back to the ongoing Conclave. ’Gods help us, I guess...’

"Barbados Federation’s President here," A voice pierced through the murmurs. "Do we know what part of the universe it’s in? Like within the solar system or—"

"Unfortunately, no." Apollo heaved. "We only felt the need to let you all know as soon as possible."

The Paraguayan Federation’s President raised a hand. "There have been recent reports of... anomalies globally. Right now as we speak." Her head turned to Apollo’s booth. "Are they linked to the presence of this entity?"

"Do we have an official classification for them?" Another voice shot without letting her question land.

"What—"

"FOR FUCK’S SAKE!"

A burst of pure Aether swept through the hall, so pressuring that it made everyone subconsciously hold their breaths.

Kali’s booth flared with a bright violet light as she rose off her seat. "We’ve done our part by coming here to warn you about the impending threat, and all you can do is argue and ask meaningless things."

Loki blinked.

Seeing Kali lash out like this was a very rare sight. Too bad they didn’t bring popcorn.

"You’re all supposed to be the leaders of the Hunter world for crying out loud," she sounded like she was at the verge of clawing her own eyes out. "Make the vote. Now. If I could have my way, I’d just skip the damn formalities and order we begin contacting these civilisations. But that goes against the very reason the IHC was created to begin with."

The hall was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

’Damn.’ Ambrose thought. ’That aura was fucking intense.’

He’d surpassed every SS-Rank in raw power only days ago. Yet for some reason, that felt like a chihuahua before a lioness when compared to someone like Kali.

Or... maybe that was an exaggeration.

Regardless, it was clear he still had a long way to go before touching the power the Pantheon had. And an even longer way before he could surpass them and become an official SSS-Rank himself.

"Well," Aileen cleared her throat, carefully adjusting her glasses. "Wise words from Hunter Kali."

She allowed the silence to settle for just a moment longer before placing both palms upon the podium.

"Representatives of every Federation present," her calm voice echoed throughout the Grand Hall, "you have heard the Pantheon’s recommendation as well as the circumstances forcing this Council to accelerate today’s proceedings."

A series of holographic panels shimmered into existence before every national delegation, bathing the hall in hues of blue.

"This Council will now proceed with an emergency vote." Another pause. "A vote in favour shall authorise the International Hunters Council to establish official diplomatic contact with any intelligent civilisation encountered within active Rifts. A vote against shall reject the motion. Delegates, please cast your decisions."

The atmosphere became unbearably heavy.

No one dared utter another word.

Hundreds of fingers hovered over glowing interfaces, the weight of an entire planet resting upon a single choice.

Ambrose quietly intertwined his fingers, unable to stop his knee from bouncing beneath the table.

’Come on...’

One after another, confirmations began appearing on the massive screen suspended above the podium.

United States Federation — In Favour.

Russian Federation — In Favour.

Canadian Federation — In Favour.

China — Abstains.

Japanese Federation — In Favour.

Nigerian Federation — In Favour.

Norway — Abstains.

More followed in rapid succession, green lights steadily overwhelming the occasional amber abstentions and the few scattered red votes that blinked onto the board.

Nobody applauded or celebrated.

They simply watched history unfold before their eyes.

Council Speaker Aileen lowered her gaze to the final tally before lifting it once more.

"The motion..." Even she seemed to appreciate the gravity of the moment. "...passes."

A collective breath escaped the hall.

Apollo slowly rose from his seat, golden eyes sweeping across every delegate present.

"Then humanity has made its choice." His voice carried neither triumph nor relief. Only resolve. "May today’s decision become the beginning of unprecedented cooperation... and not the greatest mistake our civilization has ever made."

He inclined his head toward Aileen.

"The Pantheon will begin preparations immediately."

Aileen gave a single nod before consulting the agenda displayed upon her tablet.

"Very well." She tapped the screen. "With the emergency motion now concluded, the twenty-seventh Grand Hunters Conclave shall proceed to its next order of business..." Her eyes swept across the delegates. "The proposed international implementation of Aether Dampeners for Esper and Guide children, and the ethical concerns surrounding their mandatory use."

The hall stirred once more, already shifting from the fate of humanity to yet another decision capable of shaping its future.

Meanwhile, Ambrose’s lips quivered with the faintest smile.

They did it.

They actually did it.
