Jiang Li furrowed her brow. ’Mistaking even a blink for a sign of affection? Did she think Liu Xuyan was incapable of blinking except when facing her?’
Jiang Li and Cao Yan arrived at the hospital again.
"Mrs. Liu, is there any hope for Miss Liu’s condition?" Jiang Li asked, turning to look at Cao Yan.
Cao Yan nodded. "We found a renowned doctor from overseas who specializes in this field.
We were originally planning to take Yanyan to see them, but then this whole mess happened."
Jiang Li’s tense body relaxed. ’Having hope is better than anything else.’
Walking into the hospital room, they saw Liu Xuyan with her eyes open, staring at the ceiling. A doctor and a nurse stood beside her.
Jiang Li stepped forward and looked down at her. "She has been caught."
Liu Xuyan’s eyes widened slightly in surprise, and her eyeballs flickered in Jiang Li’s direction.
"She wants to see you."
Cao Yan stared nervously at her daughter’s face.
"If you want to know who it is, move your right hand once. If you want to see her, move it twice."
Jiang Li watched her movements. Once, twice...
"Yanyan." Cao Yan looked at her daughter, her heart aching. ’What if seeing the person responsible is an even bigger blow to her?’
"Mrs. Liu, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If we keep this from Miss Liu, I’m afraid she’ll be plagued by nightmares every night."
Cheng Xiangyu had someone bring Lin Jin up. Only after preparations in the hospital room were complete was she allowed to enter.
The moment Lin Jin entered, she looked at Liu Xuyan excitedly. "Yanyan, it’s me! That’s our child in your belly. You can’t get rid of it."
At the sight of Lin Jin, Liu Xuyan’s pupils constricted. So overcome with agitation and rage, her right hand actually began to tremble as it rose, shakily pointing at Lin Jin.
With her mouth open, Liu Xuyan let out a series of agonized groans as tears streamed relentlessly down her face. Finally, she rasped out a single word: "Begone!"
Overcome with both pain and emotion, Cao Yan hugged Liu Xuyan. "Yanyan, Yanyan, don’t be afraid. You still have Mom and Dad."
Lin Jin struggled, trying to move forward. "Yanyan, I’m so good to you! I can take care of you forever. You don’t want our child to be without a father the moment it’s born, do you?"
Jiang Li couldn’t take it anymore. She grabbed Lin Jin by the hair and forced her to face Liu Xuyan. "Lin Jin, take a good, hard look. That is hatred, not love."
Lin Jin stared closely and saw that Liu Xuyan’s bloodshot eyes were filled with a monstrous hatred—the kind that made you want to tear someone limb from limb.
"This... How can this be possible?" Lin Jin stared in disbelief at this utterly strange Liu Xuyan.
She had never looked at her like this before. In the past, she always had a smile on her face whenever they met, so fragile and gentle, it made you want to protect her.
"Impossible. Yanyan, did they say something to you?
We were so close before..."
Liu Xuyan closed her eyes and turned her head away, not wanting to look at her for even another moment. ’She never could have imagined it would be Lin Jin, the person she trusted most.’
When Lin Jin first came to the Liu Family, she didn’t dare to look anyone in the eye. That look of low self-worth had inspired pity in her.
Lin Jin had also been very thoughtful toward her. In her heart, Lin Jin was like a caring, understanding older sister. But she never expected...
With her eyes closed, Liu Xuyan wept silently, turning a deaf ear to Lin Jin’s shouts from behind.
Cheng Xiangyu had Lin Jin taken away immediately.
That same day, the hospital scheduled Liu Xuyan’s abortion.
Jiang Li and Wu Ming sat waiting in the hallway.
"That Lin Jin is a real piece of work." Wu Ming clenched her fists in anger. ’If the victim had been able-bodied, I doubt Lin Jin would’ve have had the guts.’
Pulled from her thoughts by a repetitive poking sound next to her, Jiang Li looked over in confusion.
At some point, Wu Ming had made a small straw doll. She had written Lin Jin’s name on it and was currently jabbing it with a needle.
Jiang Li’s mouth fell open in surprise. ’A voodoo doll?’
"Does that actually work?"
"It’s useless now, but it’ll probably work later." Wu Ming grinned at Jiang Li. She didn’t have Lin Jin’s birth date and time yet.
’Once I stuff her birth date and time in there, it’ll be all set.’
Cao Yan stayed at the hospital to watch over Liu Xuyan, while Liu Yan went with Cheng Xiangyu to the police station to handle the final procedures.
The operating room door opened. Cao Yan shot to her feet, asking nervously, "Doctor, how is my daughter?"
"The surgery was a complete success."
Cao Yan let out a long sigh of relief, drenched in a cold sweat as if she were the one who had just had a brush with death.
"Mrs. Liu, our meeting was fated. Just have Miss Liu wear this Peace Talisman when she wakes up."
"Thank you, thank you," Cao Yan said, accepting it.
Wu Ming asked for Lin Jin’s birth details, took out a piece of talisman paper, wrote them on it, and stuffed it into the straw doll.
"This is for Miss Liu to relieve stress and vent her anger."
Wu Ming wrapped the object and handed it to Cao Yan.
"Okay, thank you. Thank you both so much. If it weren’t for you, who knows what a terrible injustice Yanyan would have suffered." Cao Yan looked at the two of them with gratitude.
"Don’t worry about it, it was the right thing to do. All that matters is that Miss Liu is alright. We’ll be heading back now."
Wu Ming grinned. ’We’ve been away for several days now; I’m actually getting a little homesick.’
"Hey, wait... You’re not staying for a couple more days? We want to thank you properly once we get our affairs in order."
Seeing that the two of them were about to leave, Cao Yan grew anxious. ’I haven’t even had a chance to thank them properly, why are they leaving already?’
"It’s fine, really! It was no trouble at all. Mrs. Liu, you can just pay us the fee we agreed upon earlier."
Wu Ming grabbed Jiang Li’s hand and walked outside. Once in the car, Wu Ming leaned back against the seat and tilted her head to look at Jiang Li.
’Good thing I brought Jiang Li along. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t be heading home this quickly.’
Wu Ming keyed in the destination on her GPS and started the car to head home.
Jiang Li leaned back in her seat to rest.
Partway there, Wu Ming ran into a traffic jam. She mulled it over and decided to take the old road.
Wu Ming was about to ask Jiang Li what she thought, but when she turned to look, she saw Jiang Li had already fallen asleep in her seat.
’With Jiang Li here, it’ll definitely be fine.’
This thought emboldened Wu Ming. At the next exit, she got off the highway and headed for the old road.
The bumpy ride made Jiang Li’s sleep restless.
"Go home... go home... go home..."
Countless voices whispered in her ear, urging her to go home. The shadows of the trees danced in the night, the overlapping silhouettes of branches and trunks weaving a great net.
Jiang Li stood in the center of it all, surrounded by a gray haze that obscured the path. The voices continued, winding around her until her head was buzzing.
BANG!
A loud bang echoed by her ear, and Jiang Li’s eyes shot open. She looked around, dazed. ’Weren’t we heading home? How did we end up in the mountains?’
She was about to ask what was happening when Wu Ming snatched the nearby Peach Wood Sword, stormed out of the car, and began cursing while pointing the sword at her surroundings.
"This is the third time you’ve blocked my way! Believe it or not, I’ll send every last one of you to the other side right now! Can’t even stay quiet after you’re dead? This is killing me!"
Jiang Li rubbed her temples, which helped clear her head a bit. A glance at the time made her jolt in shock.
’I just took a nap, how is it already nine o’clock?’
Looking at Wu Ming outside, she opened the car door and got out. A gust of sinister wind washed over her.
’Could my dream be connected to this place?’
"Wu Ming, it’s fine. Since they won’t let us leave, let’s go have a look. We’ve come all this way, after all."
’My dreams don’t give me hints for no reason.’
"Hmph. Fine. For my friend’s sake, I’ll show some mercy and meddle in what’s not my business."
