Seeing Crime Scenes in My Sleep

Chapter 193 - 189: Stuffing People into a Mixer

Jiang Li took the report and glanced at it. Thanks to Du Xueqing’s lead, they had made smooth progress, tracking the right people and rescuing a number of hostages.

"The factory you drew a picture of... that case might not be resolved so quickly.

The main issue is they cover their tracks too quickly. The second they sense something is wrong, they pull out, and the lead goes cold at the most critical moments.

The other party is highly alert. This won’t be resolved overnight."

Still, with Jiang Li’s help, things were already moving much faster than before.

"Should I have Xiao Ji help out?" Jiang Li asked, looking at Lu Xingye. Miao Anji’s Gu Worms were very good at finding things.

"Is... is that okay? Wouldn’t it be too much trouble?" Lu Xingye demurred, but inwardly, he was actually quite hopeful.

It wasn’t that he hadn’t considered it, but he felt it would be too forward for him to ask, so he’d dismissed the idea.

The ease with which Jiang Li helped them had made them all a little reliant on her, and they were afraid of it becoming a habit.

Jiang Li saw through Lu Xingye’s thoughts and said with a smile, "It’s a small thing for us to do. We’re just providing a lead.

The rest is still up to you. The faster you are, the more people you can save from harm."

’Still, she sometimes lamented the ones she couldn’t save, those who had died wrongful deaths.’

A smile played on Lu Xingye’s lips as he looked at her. ’She really is as kind and determined as ever.’

"Jiang Li..."

"Ah!"

A cup of warm water splashed directly onto Jiang Li. Her eyebrow twitched as she looked up, her face devoid of expression as she stared at Tan Qing.

"What do you think you’re doing!" Lu Xingye snapped. He shoved the important files on the desk to a safe spot before turning to check on Jiang Li.

"I-I didn’t mean to! I was just trying to pour a glass of water for... for her," Tan Qing stammered. Meeting Jiang Li’s eyes, she felt a chill run down her spine.

"I’m fine." Jiang Li said, finally pulling her meaningful gaze away from Tan Qing.

Tang Wen was startled, too. She grabbed a nearby blanket and draped it over Jiang Li’s shoulders.

"Thank you." Jiang Li gave her a smile.

Tang Wen stared, stunned for a moment. ’Jiang Li doesn’t seem as intimidating as I thought,’ she realized. ’She’s actually pretty easygoing.’

"It’s okay, it’s okay," Tang Wen said. Seeing that neither Jiang Li nor Lu Xingye were going to press the issue, she pulled Tan Qing back toward their desks.

"Tan Qing, are you insane? What were you thinking? This is a police station!"

Tang Wen couldn’t help but chew her out.

"It’s none of your damn business. Stop meddling," Tan Qing muttered, rolling her eyes.

"That’s Tan Qing and Tang Wen, the new interns."

Jiang Li nodded, looked away, and sat down nearby. ’Someone like Tan Qing, who acts so carelessly, won’t last long here.’

"Well, I’m going to head out," Jiang Li said, glancing at Lu Xingye before turning and walking away.

After watching Jiang Li leave, Lu Xingye turned and walked over to Tan Qing.

Tan Qing stared at Lu Xingye, completely smitten. "Lu—"

Lu Xingye grabbed a nearby cup and threw its contents in her face. Tea leaves clung to her skin.

"AHHHH!" Tan Qing shrieked, on the verge of a meltdown.

Hearing the commotion, Zhou Tiancheng and Zhao Shuo came out from an inner office.

"Xingye, what’s going on?"

Zhao Shuo walked up to Lu Xingye. ’This kid used to be completely untamable,’ he thought. ’He only reined it in after meeting Jiang Li.’

’Who set him off this time?’

Lu Xingye stared at Tan Qing. "Next time, it won’t be something as simple as a cup of tea."

"I only splashed her by accident! I didn’t do it on purpose!"

Tan Qing lowered her head, a guilty look on her face. She couldn’t believe Lu Xingye would do that to her—throw tea in her face for Jiang Li, right here in the station, in front of so many colleagues.

Zhou Tiancheng’s expression darkened. Having heard Jiang Li’s voice earlier, he had a pretty good idea of what had just happened.

"This is a police station, not your school. You’re receiving a formal reprimand and will write a one-thousand-word self-criticism essay.

If you can’t straighten out your attitude, you can go right back where you came from!"

’There’s a real generation gap with this batch of interns,’ he thought. ’I can overlook their usual petty behavior, but this is a police station. A place where we serve the people.’

The reprimand made Tan Qing’s eyes well up with tears. She nodded, sniffling.

’She had been so happy when she found out she’d be interning here. A female chief was rare, after all. She thought it would be a great place, but it turned out to be just as rigid and by-the-book as anywhere else.’

Tang Wen saw the petty resentment in Tan Qing’s eyes and shook her head, exasperated. She looked up at a photograph of Ji Qinghe on a nearby wall.

’She’s my role model,’ Tang Wen thought. ’One day, I’ll be an officer just like Ji Qinghe—punishing evil and upholding justice!’

A new resolve filled Tang Wen’s eyes. She looked at the tasks assigned to her on her desk and got to work, brimming with confidence.

Jiang Li went home and changed her clothes. She came back out, sat down, and started munching on an apple.

Her phone rang, and she answered it.

"Hello?"

"Jiang Li, I suggest you stop meddling in things that don’t concern you. Otherwise, I’ll go after every single person you care about."

The voice on the other end was distorted. Jiang Li listened in silence. ’Meddling,’ she thought.

’The only thing she was "meddling" in right now was that one case.’

Jiang Li hung up. ’It seems Ji Qinghe and her team are moving too quickly,’ she surmised. ’They’ve rattled the enemy.’

Jiang Li sent the saved call recording to Lu Xingye with a short message: Be careful.

Jiang Li gathered Yu Huannian and the others, telling them to be extra careful for the time being and to avoid going out alone.

A flicker of displeasure crossed Miao Anji’s face. ’It seems the Gu Worms I’ve raised are no longer sufficient,’ he thought.

That night, after the others were asleep, Miao Anji’s eyes opened. He slipped out through the window and disappeared.

In her dream, Jiang Li saw herself, carrying buckets of sand and gravel and pouring them into a large mixer.

"Boss, please, no! I have a family! A wife and kids!"

Jiang Li’s heart leaped in shock. ’There’s someone inside it!’

"MMMPH! MMMPH!"

A few muffled whimpers echoed out. Jiang Li looked up, horrified. There was more than one person in there.

Her dream-self jumped down from the top of the mixer, walked over to the control panel, and prepared to start the machine.

"Don’t!" Jiang Li screamed, shooting upright. She frantically looked around, only then realizing she was back in her own home.

The ability to interfere with the vision had vanished again.

She sat up, clutching her head. ’Concrete... a construction site... another construction site...’

She called Lu Xingye’s team to explain the situation and ask them to investigate.

At that very moment, a man standing over a fresh pour of concrete laughed manically. "Don’t blame me for being ruthless," he cackled. "This is the only way to make sure the bridge is truly stable."

"Agh! What is this?!"
