The man suddenly cried out in pain. A sharp sting on his neck sent him tumbling right off the cement mixer.

Suddenly, a pair of shoes appeared before him. Looking up, the glint of silver ornaments was so bright he could barely see.

"Who... who the hell are you?" He looked up and could only see a figure adorned in silver, and beyond that, a dense swarm of crawling insects.

Miao Anji ignored the man’s shock. He scanned the area but didn’t see the person he was looking for. ’Did I get here too early?’

The man at his feet tried to say something else, but his consciousness faded and he passed out completely.

Miao Anji heard muffled groans coming from inside. Puzzled, he climbed up, pulled out his phone, and shone its light inside. He saw several heads.

The moment they saw the light, their struggles grew more frantic.

Miao Anji froze for a moment. He looked down at the unconscious man. ’What did Sister say to do first in a situation like this?’

Miao Anji took out his phone and looked at it. ’Oh, right. Call the police.’

Miao Anji opened up Lu Xingye’s contact and started a video call.

Lu Xingye saw the incoming video call on his phone and answered. The next second, he jolted in fright.

On the screen, several people were buried in slurry, each one screaming with a distorted face.

"AHHHH!"

Lu Xingye quickly flipped the switch on his bedside lamp, his back drenched in cold sweat. He glanced at the caller ID. "Xiao Ji, where are you right now?"

Lu Xingye got out of bed and drank a glass of water to steady himself.

"I don’t know. I came looking for someone, but I didn’t find them. These people look like they’re about to die. You guys should hurry."

"Okay, okay, okay. Can you try to rescue them?"

"I don’t know how." Miao Anji looked at Lu Xingye on the screen and hung up.

"Hey!" Lu Xingye stared at the disconnected call, then hurriedly called the station to have them track Miao Anji’s phone location.

They had entered their information into the system long ago to ensure their safety, so tracking him wasn’t difficult.

He got dressed and went downstairs. By then, Zhao Shuo had already sent the location to his phone. He got on his motorcycle and rushed over immediately.

"Hey, Brother Zhao, it’s the location you just sent me. Get people over there, quick. There are people in the cement mixer. I’m afraid they’ll suffocate if we’re too late."

Zhao Shuo’s voice came through his earpiece. "Don’t worry. I already sent some colleagues over when I sent you the location."

"Aren’t Jiang Li and the others there?" Zhao Shuo checked the traffic conditions. Since they were tracking Miao Anji, he figured Jiang Li should be there too.

If she were there, things probably wouldn’t have gotten to this point.

"Jiang Li isn’t here. Xiao Ji is, but he’s never used a cement mixer before, so he’s afraid to touch anything."

Zhao Shuo understood immediately. It would be a disaster if Miao Anji accidentally started the machine.

When Lu Xingye arrived, he saw Miao Anji sitting on top of a person, playing a flute.

Seeing someone had arrived, Miao Anji stopped what he was doing and hopped off the person.

Lu Xingye glanced over, walked to the side to take a look, and quickly started releasing the sand from the mixer.

Tang Wen arrived with other officers, and an ambulance was right with them.

"Everyone, lend a hand!"

Lu Xingye shouted, and the others came over with flashlights to help pull the people out.

Miao Anji leaned casually against a nearby crate. Seeing that things were more or less handled, he prepared to leave.

’Anyway, the person I’m looking for isn’t here. If I get back late, Sister will worry.’

"You’re the first witness. You can’t leave yet. You have to come back to the station with us."

Tan Qing had noticed Miao Anji the moment she arrived. It was hard not to—he was just too eye-catching, from his clothes to his looks.

Seeing him about to leave, she quickly stepped forward to block his path.

Miao Anji gave a bored yawn and looked at Lu Xingye. "I’m heading back. I’ll come by tomorrow."

Lu Xingye looked at the still-unconscious man. The rest of the victims would have to be taken to the hospital.

"Okay."

"Hey, wait a minute." Tan Qing was dumbfounded. ’How can he just let him go?’

Miao Anji snorted softly and turned to leave, his silver ornaments clinking and clanking. ’Another fruitful day.’

When Jiang Li woke up, she called Ji Qinghe and learned that Miao Anji had happened to be nearby and accidentally rescued the victims. The suspect was currently at the station, still unconscious.

"Oh, okay, Officer Ji. I’ll bring Xiao Ji over." Jiang Li put on her shoes, washed up, and then came out to knock on Miao Anji’s door.

Miao Anji came out with his hair down, looking at her with sleepy eyes. "Sister."

"Xiao Ji, Officer Ji asked us to come to the station."

"Okay." Miao Anji came out, yawning and wearing slippers.

Seeing this, Jiang Li could only take him as he was. ’He can catch up on sleep when we get back,’ she thought.

Wearing the blue pajamas Jiang Li had bought for him and a pair of flip-flops, Miao Anji followed behind her, yawning the whole way.

When they arrived at the police station, Zhao Shuo hurried over. "Jiang Li, Xiao Ji, you’re here. Have a seat."

Zhao Shuo had them sit down, then looked at Miao Anji and coaxed him in a gentle voice, "Xiao Ji, did you... did you put a bug on that scumbag?"

They’d had him checked out as soon as they brought him in last night. They couldn’t find anything wrong with him, but he just remained unconscious.

"Yeah. His laugh was too loud. It scared my bugs away." Miao Anji leaned back languidly on the sofa, still not fully awake.

"Then could you..."

Miao Anji nodded.

Then, Zhao Shuo saw some kind of insect fly over and hide behind Miao Anji’s neck.

"It’s done," Miao Anji said, then yawned again. He tilted his head, grinning at Jiang Li.

Jiang Li sighed helplessly but didn’t say anything.

"If you’re sleepy, go lie down in the break room for a bit. I’ll go take a look."

Jiang Li looked at Miao Anji’s slightly messy hair and smoothed it down for him.

Miao Anji got up and went into the break room.

Jiang Li followed Zhao Shuo to see the suspect.

"Yuan Zegang. He’s a foreman in charge of the construction site. We’ve questioned several workers, including the victims from last night who weren’t seriously injured."

"They said that back when Yuan Zegang was building a reservoir dam, the pillars wouldn’t stand up; they kept collapsing."

"His superiors saw the deadline approaching and started putting pressure on the people below them."

"Those people heard some folk remedy from who-knows-where, something about needing to make a child sacrifice."

"Back then, Yuan Zegang was just a lowly worker, and he was tricked into bringing his own child."

"After that, the dam was completed, and Yuan Zegang was recognized by his superiors for his role in it."

Jiang Li took a sharp breath. ’This is just... too unbelievable.’

Jiang Li looked at Zhao Shuo. "Are the people in the cement mixer related to what happened back then?"

Zhao Shuo looked at her and nodded. "It was Wu Dong and Shi Meng who suggested it back then, and they were the ones egging him on."

"A month ago, the two of them found Yuan Zegang and asked to work under him. Yuan Zegang had held a grudge this whole time. Seeing them with their happy families, wives and children, he decided to kill them."

Zhao Shuo gave her a smile. "But this is all just speculation based on the information we have so far. We’ll know the details once the man wakes up."

"COUGH COUGH, COUGH COUGH COUGH... Where... where am I?"
