"Fuck, ’her’ this, ’her’ that—just spit it out!" The man let go of Shi Anno and shot a vicious glare at his underling.
"She’s the one several big shots had their eyes on—the one who matched and got away from Wu Jianzhang."
"The higher-ups threw a huge fit that time. If we can bring her back, she alone is worth two of our other targets!"
Only then did Wang Laoer remember who she was. He hadn’t expected such a coincidence.
They couldn’t touch Shi Anno anyway, so bringing this one back would still be a good score.
If they brought her back for the boss to deal with himself, it would be another huge accomplishment.
"You go negotiate. Tell their people to pull back, then bring the car over. We need to get in."
The man walked to the side with his gun and picked up a bullhorn. "Alright, bring the car over and have your people leave. Just... those few can stay.
Otherwise, we can’t trust you."
The man pointed at Lu Xingye and his group. ’Once the cops leave, taking them out will also mean the mission’s accomplished.’
Shi Xingchao raised an eyebrow. ’He has some brains, at least.’
"Okay, I’ll have someone bring the car over!" Zhou Tiancheng agreed at once. "Captain Luo, have your men head back first."
Seeing their killing intent subside, Jiang Li stepped forward to check on Shi Anno. "Are you all right?"
"Thank you... thank you, miss." Shi Anno’s eyes were filled with fear. Her body trembled nonstop, twitching every now and then.
"Don’t be afraid." Jiang Li patted her head.
Shi Anno looked at her, tears welling in her eyes. "Miss, I don’t know why, but they grabbed me as soon as I left my house.
"They were always threatening the other kids they’d captured, saying they were going to sell them.
"Miss, you saved me... does that mean they’re going to sell you too?"
Shi Anno buried her face in Jiang Li’s embrace and whispered,
"Miss, I don’t want you to get sold. My teacher told me about human traffickers... Once they take you, you’re either forced into running scams, or..."
Shi Anno’s voice choked with sobs as she clutched at Jiang Li. "It’s all my fault. If I had just stayed home that day, I wouldn’t have been caught."
Jiang Li looked at Shi Anno’s trembling body. "Trust me, we’ll both be okay."
Soon, the car was ready. Jiang Li was led downstairs by her captors.
The moment Shi Anno got downstairs, she saw Shi Xingchao and burst into tears. "Daddy!"
"Anno, you’re okay! That’s wonderful! You scared Daddy to death!"
"Daddy, can you save that lady? Please, save her." Shi Anno cried, clutching his clothes.
Shi Xingchao glanced at Jiang Li’s back as she was forced into the car, then turned to his daughter with a haggard, helpless expression.
"Anno, they have guns. Daddy can’t save her."
Shi Anno’s face went deathly pale. She let go of Shi Xingchao and started to run back, but in the next second, he grabbed her and held her tight.
Zhou Tiancheng watched the car leave, then immediately got into his own and followed.
In the car, Jiang Li leaned back in her seat. "I’d like to at least die knowing who wanted me dead."
"Tch. There’s a long line of people who want you dead. Your death would make a whole lot of people happy. How about that?"
Jiang Li continued, "But I’m not in good health. Maybe Wu Jianzhang’s examination was wrong."
"Who gives a damn about your health? As long as you’re a warm body, you’re fine. The rich go through them fast."
Jiang Li raised an eyebrow. "Your boss is Shi Xingchao, isn’t he?"
"How did you..."
"Are you a fucking idiot!"
Before the man could finish, he got a hard smack on the head.
Jiang Li understood. She said no more, simply watching as the car drove toward the mountains.
’Shi Xingchao. An inconspicuous developer. It makes sense no one would suspect him.’
’When looking for someone with that much influence, you’d normally look higher up the social ladder.’
"Um, I need to use the bathroom. I’ll just be a minute."
"Piss in the car."
Jiang Li fell silent. After the car had gone a little further, she spoke again. "My stomach hurts. I’m about to have explosive diarrhea."
"Dammit, you’re a real pain in the ass!" Wang Laoer cursed impatiently.
’Can’t have her shitting in the car, though.’
Looking at the mountainside beside them, Wang Laoer spoke. "Fine, this’ll do. We’re heading into the woods."
Jiang Li was hauled out of the car. One of the men drove it to the side of the road and, without pulling the handbrake, let it roll down the embankment.
"Right here. Do your business."
The men stared at Jiang Li, not letting her out of their sight.
"Uh, you know what, the urge suddenly passed. Let’s just keep walking."
Jiang Li stood amongst them, and her sudden cooperativeness left them momentarily confused about her intentions.
Jiang Li watched the men from the corner of her eye. ’Xiao Ji’s Gu Worms should be kicking in by now, right?’
After a few more steps, the men collapsed one after another.
Jiang Li looked at the fallen men, then rummaged through their pockets for a phone. She found one without a password, turned it on, and dialed Ji Qinghe’s number.
’It was the only number she could remember.’
"Hello?"
"Officer Ji, it’s me. See if you can track this phone’s location. Contact Officer Zhou and the others for me. I’m in the woods. Tell them to hurry."
As she spoke, Jiang Li turned on the phone’s GPS.
"Okay, okay."
Ji Qinghe shot to her feet, grabbing another phone to call Zhou Tiancheng.
Jiang Li gathered all the men’s phones and looked at the one in her hand. It was clean—the only call in its history was the one she had just made.
Afraid they would wake up, Jiang Li pulled some nearby vines and tied them up, then confiscated their guns and knives, tossing them aside.
She held a rock in her hand. If they woke up, she’d be able to strike fast.
"That’s great! Jiang Li is fine. Qinghe is getting a location..."
"I know where Sister is. I can lead you right to her," Miao Anji suddenly interjected.
"Oh! Okay, good. Is this the right road?" Lu Xingye glanced at Miao Anji in the rearview mirror.
"Yes, it is."
When they arrived, Miao Anji called out, "Stop here. They went into the woods."
Miao Anji followed the insect on his hand, his pace quickening. Sister had one of his Gu Worms on her, so the signal was guaranteed to be accurate.
With Miao Anji leading the way, they found Jiang Li without any trouble.
"Sister, are you okay?"
"I’m fine. Take these men back first. And by the way, their boss is Shi Xingchao."
Zhou Tiancheng immediately called Zhao Shuo.
Back at the scene, Zhao Shuo was handling the aftermath. Shi Xingchao was holding Shi Anno. "Officer, my daughter’s not doing well. I need to take her to the hospital."
With that, Shi Xingchao got into his car with Shi Anno and drove off.
Zhao Shuo quickly got in his car and followed. Partway there, he saw an incoming call from Zhou Tiancheng and immediately answered it.
"Hey, Brother Zhou, what’s the word on Jiang Li?"
"She’s fine. Jiang Li said the man behind this is Shi Xingchao. What’s your situation?"
"Shi Xingchao said he’s taking Shi Anno to the hospital. I’m tailing him now."
After he finished speaking, Zhao Shuo glanced at the car ahead. The area was remote, with few other vehicles on the road.
Shi Xingchao was trying to call his men, but the calls wouldn’t go through. Seeing Zhao Shuo’s car behind him, his expression darkened.
"A bunch of useless bastards!" Shi Xingchao cursed under his breath. He jerked the steering wheel, whipping the car around in a drift and ramming straight toward Zhao Shuo’s vehicle.
"CRASH!"
A tremendous bang echoed from the other end of the line!
