"Zhao Shuo! Zhao Shuo!" Zhou Tiancheng yelled. The next second, the line went dead with a BEEP BEEP BEEP.
A sense of dread washed over him.
"Qinghe, something’s happened to Zhao Shuo!"
Ji Qinghe’s heart clenched. "I’m on my way with backup. He’ll be fine."
As she spoke, Ji Qinghe urged her team to drive faster.
Zhou Tiancheng and his men tossed the person into their car and started driving back.
The moment Jiang Li heard something had happened to Zhao Shuo, her mind went blank.
Zhou Tiancheng told his colleagues in the car behind them to take the suspect to the station first, while sending others to find Shi Xingchao.
When they arrived, they found Shi Xingchao’s car crashed on the edge of the highway, with Zhao Shuo’s car down below it.
"Qinghe, what’s the situation?" Zhou Tiancheng hurried forward. ’He should have been sent to the hospital by now, right?’
Ji Qinghe looked at him with red-rimmed eyes. "It was like this when I arrived. The other injured officers have already been sent to the hospital."
"Zhao Shuo is gone. Shi Xingchao must have taken him. I don’t know... I don’t know if he’s still alive."
After speaking, Ji Qinghe couldn’t stop herself from turning away to wipe her tears.
Jiang Li stared at the crash scene, unable to accept what she was seeing.
Zhou Tiancheng handed his car keys to Lu Xingye. "Xingye, you drive. Take Jiang Li to the hospital first. We’ll handle things here."
Lu Xingye nodded, took the keys, and helped Jiang Li into the car.
Jiang Li looked back, staring blankly at the scene.
Yu Huannian and Miao Anji got in the car and left with them.
Wu Ming looked at the blood on her left arm, unsure if it was from a knife or a gun.
Jiang Li glanced down. "I’m fine. It doesn’t hurt."
"How could it not hurt? You’re bleeding so much."
Wu Ming hugged her, her heart aching. ’It’s all those bastards’ fault. Of all the people they could have targeted, they just had to demand Jiang Li.’
At the hospital, Lu Xingye expertly led Jiang Li to get her wound treated. The moment her sleeve was rolled up, a long gash covering half of her forearm was revealed.
Lu Xingye stared at Jiang Li in shock. She hadn’t said a single word the entire way, so he had assumed it wasn’t serious.
"Jiang Li, a wound this deep... you don’t feel any pain? This is going to need stitches..."
Jiang Li looked at the gruesome gash on her arm. She hadn’t felt much pain when it happened, so she’d paid it no mind, assuming it was just a small cut.
"The wound is deep and requires sutures. A guardian will need to go pay the fee first."
Lu Xingye took the form and headed out.
Jiang Li watched the doctor clean debris out of her wound, frowning slightly before turning her head away.
When Lu Xingye returned, he stood in the doorway and watched. Jiang Li’s expression remained completely blank as the doctor cleaned the wound.
Lu Xingye’s brow furrowed. ’How could that not hurt?’
’Jiang Li used to be so much more expressive...’
After a local anesthetic was administered, the doctor began stitching up Jiang Li’s arm.
Lu Xingye was about to find a place to make a phone call when he suddenly spotted Zhang Haosheng.
"Doctor Zhang, excuse me. Could I ask you a quick question?"
Zhang Haosheng looked at him. "Oh, it’s you. Is Jiang Li back in the hospital again?"
Lu Xingye gave a strained smile. "Doctor Zhang, if someone has a very serious injury but can’t feel any pain... how would you treat that?"
Zhang Haosheng’s expression grew serious. "Generally, there are two possibilities: damage to the nervous system, or neuropathy. If you’re talking about Jiang Li, we can rule those out."
"The other possibility is psychological factors causing pain insensitivity. For example, a depressive episode, post-traumatic stress, acute stress, somatic symptom disorder, or a dissociative disorder..."
Zhang Haosheng finished and looked seriously at Lu Xingye. "I assume you two are close. Tell me, is Jiang Li really better?"
Lu Xingye opened his mouth, but not a single word came out. ’Jiang Li, Little Li, her occasional strange behavior...’
"Thank you, Doctor Zhang." With that, Lu Xingye turned and walked away.
Zhang Haosheng watched Lu Xingye’s retreating back and sighed helplessly. ’Jiang Li just isn’t willing to let herself heal.’
’She’s become dependent on her illness, perhaps even finds a strange comfort in it. That kind of mindset doesn’t form overnight.’
When Lu Xingye returned, Yu Huannian and the others were still waiting by the door.
He sat down and searched for information on the topic. After reading, he closed his eyes and leaned back in his chair.
’What should I do? What can I possibly do?’
’Just tell her directly? "Jiang Li, I’ll go with you to see a doctor. I’ll stay with you for as long as it takes."’
’Jiang Li would probably just turn and walk away on the spot.’
Lu Xingye took a deep breath, overcome by a familiar feeling of powerlessness. He sat up straight and searched for other methods.
’A positive mood is beneficial for recovery.’
’Jiang Li sees crime scenes every time she closes her eyes. A positive mood?’
Lu Xingye let out a bitter laugh.
The door opened and the group stood up. Jiang Li appeared in the doorway, her arm wrapped in bandages.
The doctor beside her was explaining aftercare instructions and her follow-up appointment time.
"Doctor, how long will it take to heal?" Jiang Li asked.
"An injury like this will take at least six months. You can’t be careless with it. Pay close attention to your recovery," the doctor said, looking at Jiang Li.
’They were practically acquaintances at this point. How does a nice young woman like her keep getting mixed up in police business? What a shame.’
"Okay, thank you, Doctor." Wu Ming stepped forward to support Jiang Li, then turned to Yu Huannian.
"Xiao Nian, did you remember all the foods the doctor said she needs to avoid?"
Yu Huannian nodded. "Got it. I’ll buy some bones on the way back to make a stew."
Jiang Li looked at Lu Xingye. "Any news about... Officer Zhao?"
"He’ll be okay. Don’t overthink it. Just go home and get some rest."
"Stop worrying about it. Let’s go." Wu Ming’s eyes were red as she helped Jiang Li head downstairs. ’Honestly, why does she have to worry about so much?’
Back home, the anesthetic began to wear off, and an intense, itching pain throbbed in Jiang Li’s arm. She watched the news on TV, where a manhunt for Shi Xingchao had officially begun.
Wu Ming saw Shi Xingchao’s photo on the screen and seethed. ’Those people let everyone else go, but they kept his daughter. They must have done it on purpose.’
Her heart ached as she looked at Jiang Li. ’If they had only known about Shi Xingchao’s plot, neither Jiang Li nor Zhao Shuo would be in this situation.’
’Those bastards are too good at pretending.’
Seeing Wu Ming looking like she wanted to say something but was holding back, Jiang Li just smiled and shook her head. "It’s fine. I only went to clear some things up."
’One death for the happiness of seven or eight others. My life is worth a lot, after all.’
’But I feel like there’s more to it than that. It’s not just about my "value" or the threat I pose to their operation. There must be another reason they’re targeting me.’
’Shi Xingchao might be the final key to figuring it out.’
"Alright, stop thinking about all that. The doctor said you can’t get your arm wet. I’ll help you wash up. Then you can eat something and get a good night’s sleep."
Wu Ming pulled Jiang Li into the bathroom to help her wash up.
"Don’t cover up. Jiang Li, what’s there to be shy about?" Wu Ming couldn’t resist teasing when she saw Jiang Li’s face flush red.
"Ooh, Jiang Li, this body wash smells amazing."
Jiang Li’s mind went blank for a second. ’Wait, didn’t we buy the same kind?’
Wu Ming covered her mouth to stifle a laugh. She helped Jiang Li dry off and get into her pajamas. "Alright, alright, I’m just teasing you. Let’s go eat."
After dinner, Jiang Li was hustled off to bed. Wu Ming set up a folding cot next to her, ready to keep an eye on her all night.
"Wu Ming, you watch over her. We’re heading out for a bit," Yu Huannian said after clearing the dishes. He then left with Miao Anji.
"So, where to?" Yu Huannian asked, straddling his new motorcycle and looking at Miao Anji.
Miao Anji glanced at the bike, then shot him a skeptical look. "Do you even know how to ride that thing?"
Yu Huannian: "..."
