’Dwarfism?’
Jiang Li looked at the disfigured man before her, and her thoughts turned to the woman locked away inside. A wave of anger washed over her.
"Grandpa, I, I don’t want to..."
The moment the man finished speaking, something heavy struck him on the head.
"Don’t want to! Do you want the Gao family line to end with you? Let me tell you, if you’re still disobedient after the temple fair, I’ll send you down to reunite with your family!"
The man’s body trembled, and he didn’t dare say another word.
Suddenly, she was shaken awake. Wu Ming was rousing her from a dream.
"Jiang Li, the temple fair is today."
The words snapped Jiang Li wide awake.
"Okay, Wu Ming. Are any of those people surnamed Gao?"
Wu Ming sat on the edge of the bed and looked at her. "Gao is a common surname around here."
Jiang Li nodded thoughtfully and took out her phone to contact Lu Xingye and the others.
"The suspect’s surname is Gao. He has a grandson who is severely disfigured and might have dwarfism. Also, they’re holding a woman captive—a woman with disabilities."
As Jiang Li spoke, her tone became one of gritted teeth. ’That damn old man is a monster.’
’It’s harder to go after ordinary people, so he targets these unfortunate souls instead. He really deserves to die!’
Lu Xingye listened and took notes. "Okay, we’ll keep an eye out."
"Wu Ming and I are going to get busy then." With that, Jiang Li hung up.
Lu Xingye stared at the disconnected call and sighed helplessly. He had finally found an excuse, thinking he could have some fun with Jiang Li.
But he never expected a case to pop up wherever they went.
Huo Qing looked at Lu Xingye’s glum face and couldn’t help but laugh out loud. ’He begged and pleaded to come along, and for what? It’s still the same old story.’
Thinking of Jiang Li’s personality, Huo Qing advised earnestly, "Xingye, maybe you should find someone else?"
’That kid has no interest in that sort of thing. It’s never going to go anywhere.’
A flicker crossed Lu Xingye’s eyes. He pressed his lips together and looked up at him. "Brother Huo, what nonsense are you talking about? We’re just friends."
Huo Qing raised an eyebrow and shook his head helplessly. ’He’s just playing dumb with me.’
’Forget it. It’s a young man’s problem. He’ll learn after he hits a few walls.’
Huo Qing patted Lu Xingye’s shoulder and went to make arrangements with his men. Because of the information Jiang Li had provided, they had assigned extra personnel and were still investigating.
Lu Xingye looked at his phone, Huo Qing’s words replaying in his mind as an image of Jiang Li appeared.
’Life is just a few short decades. It doesn’t have to be all about romance. In his line of work, he could die any day. This is fine too. Just cherish the moment as it comes.’
Lu Xingye put away his phone and turned to get back to work.
The streets of the temple fair parade were packed with people. Miao Anji tied a bracelet with a small bell onto her wrist.
The tall and sturdy Yu Huannian stood beside Jiang Li, keeping her from being jostled so much that she’d trip over her own feet.
As they walked on, the people around them were all strangers wearing masks. Jiang Li frowned and glanced around.
"Xiao Nian? Xiao Ji?"
Jiang Li stood on her tiptoes, searching, but she couldn’t see a trace of them.
"Here it comes! Here it comes!" Cheers erupted from the crowd, and the sound of gongs and drums grew closer.
WHOOSH!
Two people at the front were breathing fire. The arm-thick incense sticks burning nearby made her feel dizzy and light-headed, and her vision started to blur.
The dragon dance troupe advanced menacingly, and the people on either side recoiled in fright.
Jiang Li was standing too close and was nearly slapped in the face by its tail.
A float was carrying a clay statue. Jiang Li immediately looked over, but in the next second, Nuo opera performers danced over, and a series of masks floated past her eyes.
A sense of unease grew in Jiang Li’s heart. Just as she was about to back away, someone from inside the procession grabbed her and pulled her in!
Seeing this, the surrounding crowd cheered even louder.
Jiang Li gradually calmed down. Two lions surrounded her, making her the center of attention. She was so embarrassed her scalp tingled.
She wanted to find a gap to slip through, but in the next moment, people in local costumes surrounded her. They put a mask on her face and forced her to walk along with them.
The next second, the Nuo opera performers rushed over and pushed those people aside. In the chaos, she nearly fell but was pulled back at the critical moment.
Jiang Li’s eyes met the woman’s mask. Then, the mask was removed, revealing a delicate and gorgeous face. Amid the swirling smoke, Jiang Li was pushed away.
The woman uttered a single word to her: "Go."
Jiang Li turned to leave but froze the next second. She stared at the clay statue in front of her. In a moment of hesitation, she secured her mask and followed it.
Bai Yulan watched the woman who hadn’t left and frowned. She was about to step forward but received a warning glance in the next instant.
Remembering her objective, she continued on with the parade.
Jiang Li drew near the clay statue. The stench of rot, mixed with the scent of incense, assaulted her nostrils. ’It seems this is the one.’
Jiang Li was just about to notify Lu Xingye and his team when she saw a message he had sent earlier.
To avoid causing a panic among the citizens, they had decided to wait until the crowd thinned out before making a move.
’Looks like they’ve found it too.’
Jiang Li didn’t make any rash moves. When she turned around, a bare-chested young man bounded toward her.
"Whoa!" Jiang Li was nearly hit in the face, but thankfully someone pulled her back.
"Be careful." The female police officer accompanying the parade steadied her, then pulled aside the police tape to let her out.
"Thank you, thank you." Jiang Li looked at her gratefully. ’I’m finally out!’
Wu Tong couldn’t help but smile. "It’s nothing. Stay safe."
Jiang Li turned back, and the smile on her face froze. It was just as crowded here.
"Sister! Sister!" Miao Anji and Yu Huannian shouted at the top of their lungs.
Lu Xingye approached the target clay statue.
Pushed along by the crowd, Jiang Li spotted Wu Ming in the long procession. She was dressed in a stiff, proper Daoist robe, and some people around her were even calling out her online handle.
Jiang Li took out her phone and snapped several pictures of Wu Ming.
As she was about to push her way out of the crowd to find her friends, several people began moving toward her with clear intent.
Jiang Li’s eyes darted. She tightened her grip on the dagger she carried and headed toward a less crowded area.
Once she reached the spot, she took off her mask and turned to look at the few people behind her wearing masks with fangs.
’They were able to recognize me even with the mask. They must have been watching me since I arrived.’
Jiang Li drew her dagger, watching the approaching figures.
The men pulled knives from their sleeves and closed in on her.
Jiang Li tightened her grip on her knife. The next second, she turned, vaulted over a wall, and jumped inside.
"???"
The men stared, dumbfounded. This was not at all what they had expected.
"After her!"
"Are you crazy? That’s the Luo Family’s estate! This is their territory, and there are cops everywhere. Let’s fall back for now."
Jiang Li’s head was spinning. She scrambled to her feet.
"I’m so sorry, so sorry! Are you okay?"
Jiang Li pulled the person up. It was too dark to see clearly. If something had happened to them, she couldn’t bear the responsibility.
"COUGH, COUGH COUGH... Just help me get my medicine... ugh!"
Luo Jingheng tried to push himself up, but before he could even stand, he was hoisted up.
Jiang Li carried him into a living room. Only then did she get a clear look at the building’s interior. ’Did I... Did I just run into a private villa complex?’
"Um, where’s your medicine?"
Luo Jingheng pointed to a nearby cabinet, and Jiang Li rushed over to find the first-aid kit.
Luo Jingheng saw his bodyguards rushing over and waved them off.
