"Come back home with us, my child. Your mother and I miss you terribly. I know we’ve let you down so much over the years.

Please, give your mother and me a chance, won’t you?"

Wu Yonghui looked at Wu Ming, his eyes red.

Wu Ming stared back at Wu Yonghui, frozen in place.

"Your mother and I love you so much. Come back home, my child." Wu Yonghui’s voice broke as he started to cry.

"Miss Wu, Mr. Wu has never forgotten you. He has always kept a room for you at home, filled with all the birthday gifts he’s bought for you over the years.

Can you really bring yourself to turn your back on him?"

Li Tianming chimed in from the side.

Wu Yonghui quickly pulled out a photo. "My child, look. Your mother and I decorated this all for you."

Wu Ming looked at the photo on Wu Yonghui’s phone. It was a room that would fulfill any girl’s fantasy—including her own.

She had grown up with her Master in a mud hut, with nothing but a straw mat and moldy cotton batting for a bed.

But...

Wu Ming took a step back. "Mr. Wu, I have a home."

Although her Master was strict with her, he showed his love and care in his own clumsy way.

Every birthday, he would buy her the flower-shaped cake she always dreamed of, and a new little dress.

In her heart, Cao Kun was her father.

Wu Yonghui froze. He hadn’t expected Wu Ming to be so utterly unyielding.

"Then... could I ask you to come back with me, just for one family reunion dinner? Just once, that’s all I ask."

Wu Yonghui concealed the calculating glint in his eyes. ’As long as I can trick her into coming home, everything will be much easier.’

Wu Ming looked at Wu Yonghui hesitantly. "I’ll have to think about it."

"Okay, okay." Wu Yonghui pulled a bank card from his pocket. "This is some spending money from Dad."

With that, Wu Yonghui left with Li Tianming.

Wu Ming looked down at the bank card in her hand, then up at Wu Yonghui’s retreating figure.

Yu Huannian saw her conflicted expression. "If you want to go, just go. You’ll see what it’s really like, and then you can finally put it behind you."

Wu Ming’s lips twitched. "You talk too much."

Back in the hospital room, Jiang Li was surprised that Wu Yonghui had followed them all the way here. A sense of unease crept over her; she was worried something might happen to Wu Ming.

She got up and glanced back at her burn injuries. As she turned, her eyes fell upon the dense web of scars on her body, and she snatched her gaze away as if she’d been shocked.

The hospital room felt stuffy, so she got up to go out and get some fresh air.

Jiang Li strolled leisurely down the hallway. Downstairs in the garden, she found a bench and sat down. The cool breeze on her face felt wonderful.

"COUGH COUGH. COUGH COUGH COUGH."

A fit of urgent coughing erupted nearby. At first, Jiang Li didn’t want to get involved.

But the sound from behind her was too violent; it sounded as if the person was about to cough up a lung.

"Um... do you need me to call a doctor for you?"

Hearing her voice, Luo Jingheng instantly clenched the handkerchief in his hand. But when he looked up and saw Jiang Li, his grip loosened.

"Mr. Luo, what are you doing here?" Jiang Li asked, quickly getting to her feet.

"COUGH, COUGH. What a coincidence. I’m here for a check-up."

Luo Jingheng was surprised. ’He hadn’t expected Jiang Li to be out and about this late.’

"Let me help you get that checked out." Jiang Li went to Luo Jingheng, took his arm, and helped him to his feet.

"Mr. Luo, with all your money, you still can’t find a suitable heart?"

Luo Jingheng turned to look at Jiang Li, who was right beside him. "It’s not that I can’t find one. It’s that I don’t want one."

Jiang Li faltered. ’Why does his voice sound so bleak? It’s the same way I sounded when I wanted to die.’

"You’re still young, Mr. Luo. You’ll find a suitable match eventually."

Luo Jingheng chuckled softly. "Mm, I hope you’re right. What about you? Why are you in the hospital?"

"Ah, I wasn’t paying attention while driving and got into an accident," Jiang Li offered a small smile.

Luo Jingheng didn’t press further, simply following her as they walked back inside.

Meanwhile, Du Kang, who was frantically searching the hospital for him, felt his heart drop into his stomach in panic.
