Jiang Li stared in shock at the vision of her eighteen-year-old self. This version of Jiang Li was confident and sunny, radiating a dazzling brightness from head to toe.
"Don’t you like it, Sister?"
Jiang Li snapped out of her thoughts and looked at her happily. "No matter what Little Li becomes, she’s still Little Li."
Noticing Lu Xingye asleep in the corner, Jiang Li lowered her voice until the room was quiet again.
Lu Xingye slowly opened his eyes and looked toward the hospital bed. ’So Little Li is the version of herself she most wanted to become.’
「The next day」
Yu Huannian, Wu Ming, and the others came to the hospital to see Jiang Li, chatting and laughing as they talked.
「In the afternoon」
Ji Qinghe came to see her, bringing some case files from back then.
"Jiang Li, this is all the information on Kun Sha, as well as our colleagues who died. See if you recognize anything."
Ji Qinghe placed the file aside. Jiang Li remembered that she had been trafficked; perhaps this could help her recall something else.
"Okay, thank you, Sister Qinghe."
Ji Qinghe patted her head, her heart aching. "What’s there to thank me for? If you hadn’t helped us, you wouldn’t have been targeted."
If Jiang Li hadn’t provided them with clues, she wouldn’t have been targeted by those people.
Jiang Li smiled and shook her head. ’If I hadn’t been able to give them clues and wasn’t constantly being watched by them, Wu Jianzhang would have gotten his way long ago.’
Jiang Li lowered her head and began flipping through the file in her hands.
Kun Sha grew up in the den. At eight or nine years old, he was already killing people in the streets and helping with transportation.
By his teens, he had already become the second-in-command. That was when the police started watching him, and a long war of attrition began.
While in hiding, Kun Sha harmed many more people.
Jiang Li’s gaze shifted to the list of anti-drug officers—a total of forty-eight people.
She looked through them one by one, her eyes finally stopping on the photo of the last comrade on the list.
"One time when Jiang Dewang was escaping, the person chasing him looked a lot like her."
"Ling Ling. Twenty-seven years old at the time. Marital status: single."
"Back then, the organization knew how vicious Kun Sha’s group was, so comrades who were orphans were given priority for the mission."
"But we can’t rule out the possibility that some lied about their status."
The situation at the time was unique. Everyone hated Kun Sha’s group to the bone, and some of our comrades’ families suffered brutal retaliation.
To bring them to justice, that possibility couldn’t be ruled out.
It was just a pity that Kun Sha still managed to escape in the end.
Jiang Li listened and looked over the file again, then shook her head with conviction. "My parents couldn’t have been anti-drug officers."
"I have some hazy memories of living with them."
Jiang Li closed the file and looked up at Ji Qinghe and the others. "Kun Sha is targeting me, probably because I’m the reason Wu Jianzhang and Shi Xingchao faced retribution."
Lu Xingye patted her shoulder reassuringly. "Jiang Li, don’t rush. No one can say for sure what happened back then. Just focus on keeping yourself safe."
Jiang Li frowned in confusion and looked up at them. "If I were really the child of an anti-drug officer, do you think I’d still be alive today?"
Kun Sha’s methods of revenge were inhumanly cruel. Anyone even remotely connected to the officers died.
Jiang Dewang might have had connections to him. If she were really an officer’s daughter, how could she have survived until now? She would have been dead long ago.
Ji Qinghe and Lu Xingye exchanged a glance. ’Given Kun Sha’s methods back then, that does seem to be the case.’
Lu Xingye shook his head. ’What Jiang Li said isn’t entirely right. I have to trust my own judgment.’
’I can’t jump to conclusions before there’s a definitive answer.’
"You’re right. Maybe Kun Sha just went crazy," Lu Xingye said with a smile.
Nearby, Yu Huannian was packing up a thermal container.
Ji Qinghe changed the subject, steering the conversation to more ordinary matters.
"By the way, Zhao Shuo has entered the rehabilitation stage. The doctor said he can go home in a little while."
"It’s all thanks to your ’brother’ from City A."
"*Cough cough, cough cough cough.*" Jiang Li immediately choked on her saliva, a little embarrassed.
Ji Qinghe looked at her with a smile. "What’s there to be embarrassed about? Other people couldn’t form a connection with him even if they tried."
"This way, your safety is also guaranteed. It’s a good thing."
KNOCK KNOCK!
Zhao Shuo’s condition had stabilized, and Chi Yu was just about to head back when he suddenly heard that Jiang Li had been hospitalized.
He froze for a moment. ’Hospitalized again?’
After asking around, he learned it was a burn, but thankfully, it wasn’t serious.
After checking on Zhao Shuo, Chi Yu found out Jiang Li’s room number and went to find her.
Yu Huannian came forward to open the door. Seeing Chi Yu, he said, "Brother."
Chi Yu’s lips curved into a smile. "Mhm, I came to see Jiang Li and brought her some medicine."
Yu Huannian quickly stepped aside to let him in.
Chi Yu placed an ointment on the nearby cabinet. "It’s for the scars. I’m planning to return to City A in a few days. If it’s not enough, contact me and I’ll mail you more."
After speaking, Chi Yu glanced at the people in the room. "Is there anything you need help with?"
When Ji Qinghe heard this, she immediately thought of Jiang Li’s safety.
"Mr. Chi, let’s talk outside."
Chi Yu glanced at Jiang Li, then turned and followed Ji Qinghe out.
"Is that Doctor Chi? What’s he doing here too?"
Du Kang, who was out for a walk with Luo Jingheng, saw Chi Yu walk out of the hospital room and exclaimed in surprise.
Luo Jingheng followed his gaze. ’It’s Jiang Li’s room again.’
"Master Li, are you sure this is the place? We can’t have any more accidents this time."
Wu Yonghui had followed Li Tianming to the hospital.
Luo Jingheng paused, then shrank back, watching as Wu Yonghui and his companion walked toward Jiang Li’s room.
Wu Yonghui knocked on the hospital room door.
"Who is it?" Wu Ming went to open the door. Seeing Wu Yonghui at the entrance, she was filled with immediate repulsion.
Wu Yonghui’s eyes lit up when he saw Wu Ming. "You... you must be Wu Ming, right? I’m..."
"Xiao Nian, make him get out."
Hearing the voice outside, Jiang Li immediately called out to Yu Huannian.
Yu Huannian stood up, pulled Wu Ming inside, and shoved Wu Yonghui out. "Get out!"
The door was slammed shut.
Wu Ming stared, dumbfounded, her mind replaying what Wu Yonghui had just said.
She turned to look at Jiang Li. ’So that day, Wu Yonghui wasn’t looking for Jiang Li, but for me?’
’Was I the daughter he was talking about?’
"Since you seemed so keen to talk to him, I just had Xiao Nian throw him out," Jiang Li said with a smile.
Wu Ming looked at Jiang Li, her eyes turning red. ’So that’s why she didn’t say anything that day and just brought me back.’
"Sob... Jiang Li, you’re the best." Wu Ming stepped forward, wanting to hug her but afraid of touching her injuries.
Jiang Li looked at Yu Huannian and Miao Anji. "Xiao Nian, Xiao Ji, I’m entrusting Wu Ming to you."
Yu Huannian nodded, and Miao Anji grunted in affirmation.
Luo Jingheng watched as Wu Yonghui was thrown out.
"Master Li, these... these people are practically bandits!"
Wu Yonghui stared at the closed door, furious and frustrated. He hadn’t even finished speaking.
’No, I can’t let this drag on. I’m afraid Tongtong will be in danger.’
Wu Yonghui waited downstairs at the hospital. He didn’t run over until Wu Ming’s group came out.
But as soon as he approached, he was blocked by Yu Huannian.
"Wu Ming, I’m your father! If you don’t believe me, we can do a paternity test."
"Don’t you want to reunite with our family?"
"Do you have any idea how long we’ve been looking for you all these years?"
Wu Ming looked at Wu Yonghui, who was weeping with joy, and the scene from outside the police station flashed through her mind.
