Lu Xingye thought it over and decided to go back to his university. He remembered a professor from his school days who seemed to be a military veteran. Maybe he could learn something from him.
Lu Xingye put his phone away, got up, and stood at the hospital room door, glancing inside. Jiang Li was sitting on the bed, her gaze fixed on a single point.
Her lips were moving, though he couldn’t tell what she was saying.
Lu Xingye watched for a moment, then quietly sat back down. He recalled what Zhang Haosheng had said. ’Jiang Li’s illness stems from her own unwillingness to move on.’
Jiang Li was still hiding things in her heart. A great many things.
After talking with Little Li for a while, Jiang Li’s mood improved significantly. ’Little Li is right,’ she thought. ’I didn’t do anything wrong. If I hadn’t acted, I would have been the one to die.’
’If my body died, I’d never be able to see Little Li again.’
Hearing the room gradually fall silent, Lu Xingye got up and walked to the door for another look. Jiang Li had fallen asleep.
Only then did he open the door, walk in, and sit down beside her.
After his check-up, Luo Jingheng returned the way he came. Seeing the closed door, he glanced sideways at Du Kang.
"Did something happen?"
"It was Kun Sha’s men. They were tailing Miss Jiang, and then something happened along the way. There was an explosion. Only Miss Jiang survived."
Luo Jingheng nodded without asking further questions and turned to head back to the hospital room arranged for him.
A moment later, Du Kang came in from outside, phone in hand. "Young Master, it’s a call from the Master."
Luo Jingheng hesitated for two seconds before taking the phone from him. Du Kang tactfully retreated outside.
"Jingheng, I hear you saw that girl, Jiang Li? Why didn’t you have Du Kang get the doctors to arrange a check-up?"
A flash of disgust crossed Luo Jingheng’s eyes before he spoke. "Father, your source isn’t very reliable. Jiang Li has been hospitalized for a heart condition before, and now she’s a psychiatric patient.
"Are you sure the information Kun Sha gave you was for my benefit, and not because he wants to see you without an heir?"
After Luo Jingheng finished speaking, the other end of the line went silent for a few seconds. But he knew he had achieved his goal.
"Ah Tai, go and find out what’s going on."
Hearing the voice on the other end, Luo Jingheng looked out the window and said, "Father, why go to all that trouble? You might as well just have Du Kang send you Jiang Li’s medical report directly."
"Put Du Kang on the phone. I’ll speak with him."
Luo Jingheng called out. Du Kang came in from outside, took the phone from his hand, and turned to leave again.
Luo Jingheng went into the adjoining room to change into a hospital gown. A doctor and nurse entered and began a comprehensive examination of his health.
After finishing the examination, they left.
Luo Jingheng paced around the room, accustomed to the routine. After a while, Du Kang pushed the door open and came in.
"Young Master, the Master has already contacted major hospitals to find a new heart for you. As for Kun Sha, the Master will not let him get away with this."
Du Kang looked at Luo Jingheng with utmost respect. He had been frail and sickly since childhood, and for years, the Master had doted on him, treating him as if he were the most precious, fragile thing in the world.
’To think Kun Sha would dare to deliberately tamper with Jiang Li’s report. It’s a good thing it was discovered. If it hadn’t been, the consequences would have been unimaginable.’
Luo Jingheng just gave a soft "mm," unconcerned with all of it. He knew his own body better than anyone.
"Young Master, Wu Yonghui has also come to C City. He’s most likely here for the ’life-for-a-life’ exchange."
After speaking, Du Kang glanced at Luo Jingheng. ’The Young Master is so interested in that Jiang Li. The Master said that if it makes the Young Master happy, it’s fine to keep her around.’
"Young Master, should I have someone keep an eye on him?"
"No need. He’s not a friend or relative. Why should I meddle in his affairs?"
With that, Luo Jingheng got into bed to rest.
Du Kang was momentarily baffled. ’Not a friend or relative, yet the Young Master had come all the way to C City for her?’
Du Kang glanced at him a couple of times but ultimately decided not to disturb him, turning to leave and stand guard outside.
After the door closed, Luo Jingheng sat up in bed, walked over to the window, and reclined in the chair there.
’He had simply learned one thing from Jiang Li: even if you were about to die, you could still live recklessly, just once.’
That night, perhaps due to the day’s events, Jiang Li had a rare dream about her childhood.
In a dark, dark room, there were other children besides her. The disobedient ones were crippled and thrown onto the streets to beg. The clever ones were forced to become pickpockets.
She was neither. Fortunately, she was decent-looking and a girl, so they planned to sell her for a good price.
Then one day, something happened. Jiang Dewang dragged her into a car. A RUMBLING sound came from behind them, the car crashed, and she was about to die.
For some reason, Jiang Dewang turned back, pulled her out of the car, and then took her back to that village.
After they arrived, Jiang Dewang beat and cursed her daily. As long as she was still breathing, the vicious beatings were endless.
Every time, she thought she was going to die, but when she opened her eyes, she was still in that same room, her heart filled with despair.
One day, Jiang Dewang came back drunk. That was the worst beating she ever received.
Just as she was on the verge of death, she was pulled back. It was Aunt Yu who saved her. After that, perhaps because Jiang Dewang was afraid she would actually die, his beatings became much lighter.
When she got a little older, the way people around her looked at her changed. The old man next door tried to lure her with candy.
That was the first time she met Little Li, and also the first time she fought back.
She bit off one of the old man’s ears. She said she was scared, but Little Li said, ’Don’t be afraid, I’m here.’
The old man was frightened by the sight of her talking to herself and ran out, telling everyone she was possessed by a ghost.
Later, when Aunt Yu found out, she looked at her with a complex, pained expression and told her to talk more with Little Li. And so, she and Little Li became the closest of family, inseparable.
Everyone around, including Jiang Dewang, started looking at her as if she were a monster.
She didn’t care. Because of Little Li’s appearance, she gradually found the will to live.
Later, in high school, her classmates avoided her. They said she was sick and even asked the teachers to send her to a mental hospital.
From then on, she restrained herself, only sharing things with Little Li when she was alone. But Qiao Siyuan still noticed.
Qiao Siyuan didn’t look at her strangely. He just looked at her with pity and was very good to her, taking great care to protect her pride.
But what was the result? He was the one who sent her away to be studied. At that moment, she watched with her own eyes as Little Li vanished before her.
In that instant, all her fear came rushing back. In that instant, she had no idea what to do.
She once again became the timid, insecure Jiang Li.
She began to feel regret. ’If only I had let Little Li take over my body back then, would the outcome have been different?’
’Little Li is smart. She definitely wouldn’t have been as foolish as me. She wouldn’t have fallen for Qiao Siyuan’s tricks.’
But whenever Little Li knew what she was thinking, she always refused.
Ever since that serial murder case, her world had changed. She found the courage to fight back, and she was able to see Little Li again.
From now on, even if the outcome was a bad one, she would have no regrets.
In the middle of the night, Jiang Li woke with a start, her clothes soaked in sweat. Her eyes darted around the room anxiously.
Suddenly, she froze.
"Little Li... you’ve... you’ve grown up?"
