Order was quickly restored downstairs. Jiang Li sent the video on her phone to Ji Qinghe.
"Sis, what are you doing here?" Yu Huannian had stepped out to use the restroom, and when he came back, she was gone. He’d been frantically looking for her.
"Just stretching my legs."
Jiang Li slipped the phone into her pocket. Just as she did, it vibrated again. She pulled it out and saw it was an international number.
Jiang Li gestured for Yu Huannian to hand her his phone, then she started recording.
"Hello?"
Jiang Li gripped her phone, listening to the sounds on the other end.
"Hello, you must be Jiang Li. I am Luo Jingheng’s father, Luo Heng."
Jiang Li glanced at the location displayed on the screen. ’Luo Jingheng’s father is in the Golden Triangle?’
’This...’
When Luo Heng didn’t hear a reply, he glanced at his phone screen in confusion before continuing.
"Miss Jiang, I’d like to ask you for a favor. Of course, you will be compensated."
Jiang Li considered for a few seconds. "What kind of favor?"
"It’s quite simple, actually. I’m sure you’re aware of Jingheng’s situation.
Jingheng has never had any friends, and you are the first. I also heard that he ate a meal cooked by your brother.
I’d like you to spend more time with him, help guide him. Also, I would like to hire your brother to be Jingheng’s personal chef.
During this time, I will guarantee your personal safety, and I will pay you a stipend of 500,000 a month. How does that sound?"
Jiang Li was stunned for a moment. It sounded very tempting, but...
"Mr. Luo, do you know who is targeting me?"
"Miss Jiang, don’t ask questions you shouldn’t. You only need to know that I have the ability to guarantee your safety and that of your brother."
Jiang Li looked up at Yu Huannian. He was the one who did the cooking.
Yu Huannian met Jiang Li’s gaze and nodded.
"Alright, I accept your offer."
Luo Heng looked at the list in front of him. "Then I’ll be counting on you."
Staring at the disconnected call, Jiang Li thought of Luo Jingheng. She really couldn’t associate him with a place like that.
Luo Jingheng’s father was in the same place as Kun Sha. It was impossible they didn’t have dealings with each other.
’How much do they know about my situation?’
Jiang Li gazed down the hallway. ’Am I getting into bed with wolves?’
’If I had refused, he would have used other methods.’
Jiang Li returned to the hospital room. Du Kang was waiting at the door and hurried over when he saw them.
"Miss Jiang, it’s almost time for dinner." After speaking, Du Kang gave Yu Huannian a pointed look.
When Jiang Li arrived, Wu Ming and Miao Anji were already sitting on the sofa inside.
Jiang Li felt Luo Jingheng’s gaze on her, but she immediately looked away and sat down to the side.
Luo Jingheng lowered his eyes, his thumb stroking the cup in his hands.
Wu Ming sensed the strange atmosphere. Her usual lively demeanor quieted, and she observed them in silence.
Yu Huannian was busy in the kitchen, and the dishes were soon served.
"Mr. Luo, Wu Ming and the others are leaving tomorrow. I... I’ll be heading back first."
Jiang Li stood up, said her goodbyes, and left with the others.
The lively hospital room fell quiet once more. Standing to the side, Du Kang could even feel the pressure in the air.
Luo Jingheng set down his cup, the crisp sound echoing in his heart.
"What happened?" Luo Jingheng looked up at Du Kang.
Du Kang answered honestly, "The Master asked for Miss Jiang’s number."
Luo Jingheng’s eyes turned cold. ’He just can’t stay out of trouble, even from so far away.’
"Go and tell him, if he still wants me to acknowledge him as my father, he’d better stay out of my business."
Luo Jingheng frowned in annoyance. He had been in a good mood just a moment ago.
"Get out."
Du Kang pressed his lips together and quickly retreated.
"Wu Ming, you have to message me when you arrive. Keep in touch."
"I know, don’t worry. You just focus on recovering and stop getting involved in other people’s business for a while."
Wu Ming stepped forward and gave her a hug. "Xiao Ji and I will head back then. You don’t need to see us off tomorrow."
Jiang Li and Yu Huannian walked the two of them downstairs to the hospital entrance.
Staring at the entrance, Jiang Li felt a sense of doubt. ’The ambulance has been gone for so long. Why hasn’t there been any news? Could something else have happened?’
Cai Xiaohua and her husband took a car back to their residential complex. As soon as they entered, they saw a fire truck and an ambulance parked downstairs.
"Well, if it isn’t my lucky day!" Cai Xiaohua snarled, glaring at the vehicles.
A malicious idea suddenly popped into her head.
She rushed upstairs, went back to her apartment, walked into the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and prepared to go out again.
"Mom? Kangkang? That’s strange. Why is no one home?"
Hearing her husband, Cai Xiaohua replied casually, "They’re probably out for a walk to clear their heads. It’s not like anything could have happened to them."
Cai Xiaohua glanced at the knife in her hand and strode quickly downstairs.
"I can’t believe the elevator broke down just like that. I heard several people are trapped inside.
There’s a pregnant woman, an elderly person, and a child in there, too."
"Stop, don’t talk about it! You didn’t see it. I just saw the police carry out half a body... Ugh, just seeing it is enough to give you nightmares."
As Cai Xiaohua reached the ground floor, she heard the buzz of discussion. When she saw the firefighters and waiting doctors by the elevator, she snorted coldly.
She crept over to the side of the ambulance. Everyone was gathered around, watching the commotion, so no one paid any attention to her.
She plunged the knife directly into the ambulance’s tire. Watching it deflate, she felt the anger she had been holding in all day finally vent.
Cai Xiaohua headed back in a much better mood. Thinking it was almost dinner time and the damned old hag wasn’t around, she took out her phone to call her.
"That damned old hag must be doing this on purpose, not even picking up her phone."
Cai Xiaohua grumbled.
"Make way, make way!" A nurse pushed a stretcher toward the exit.
On the stretcher was a heavily pregnant woman, and a firefighter was carrying an unconscious elderly person on his back.
"The child is bleeding heavily! The situation is critical, we have to get them to the hospital now!"
The lead doctor began giving orders, "Get the child and the pregnant woman into the ambulance first."
"Strange, why isn’t the vehicle moving?" The driver quickly got out to check.
"Fuck! Some son of a bitch slashed the tire!
We’re having the worst fucking luck today!"
Seeing this, Cai Xiaohua covered her mouth and let out a stifled laugh. ’Serves them right!’
"I’m the pregnant woman’s husband! I’ll take my wife to the hospital myself!"
A man, sweating profusely, rushed out from the crowd with his family. Seeing his wife on the stretcher, he quickly picked her up, put her in a car, and sped off toward the hospital.
"It’s too late to call for another ambulance now! Does anyone else have a car? We need help!"
The doctor looked at the child, whose breathing was faint, performing first aid while asking for help.
"I have a car, but it’s parked outside the complex."
"My car is right here! I’ll call my husband to come down and drive."
"Please, hurry!"
