Jiang Li collected her thoughts and sat down to eat.
After the meal, Luo Jingheng wiped his mouth and looked up at her.
"What is it you want to ask?"
Jiang Li looked at Luo Jingheng, who appeared so frail and helpless. "What does your... father do?"
Luo Jingheng rubbed the web of his hand, his thumb stroking back and forth. He looked up. "You know what a local tyrant is, right?"
Jiang Li stood up. Her fists clenched and unclenched at her sides several times as her mind began to race.
"You knew about me from the very beginning?"
Luo Jingheng was surprised—she was even quicker on the uptake than he’d imagined. He tilted his head to look out the window, his gaze lowered.
A strange anger welled up inside Jiang Li.
After shooting Luo Jingheng a few glances, she forced her anger down. "Xiao Nian, let’s go back."
If she couldn’t afford to provoke Kun Sha, she *definitely* couldn’t afford to provoke a local tyrant.
That evening, Jiang Li had Yu Huannian make dinner and then return home immediately. She felt a strong aversion to Luo Jingheng now—no, to people like him.
Yu Huannian finished cooking, packed up the food containers, and left. ’The ingredients they bought were pretty good, though,’ he thought.
Luo Jingheng looked at the dishes on the table and suddenly found them completely unappetizing.
He set down his chopsticks and leaned back in his chair, his face frighteningly grim.
"Sir, you could have explained things to Miss Jiang," Du Kang said, looking at him.
"And if I explained, could I deny the fact that Luo Heng is my father?"
Luo Jingheng had never met Luo Heng after he was born; it was his grandfather who raised him.
When he was eleven, his grandfather fell ill. That was the first time he saw Luo Heng, who had rushed back from out of town.
After Luo Heng found out about his heart condition, he began his search. Soon after, a girl of the same age appeared in their home.
Luo Jingheng always watched her from a distance. Just as he worked up the courage to approach her and try to be friends, he learned the true reason Luo Heng was keeping her.
In that moment, he was utterly disgusted with Luo Heng. He even hated himself for having such a father.
Afterward, he would often hear his grandfather arguing with Luo Heng at night. He learned that his grandfather’s legacy was so formidable that Luo Heng, refusing to live in his shadow, had set out to build his own empire.
And once he started, there was no turning back.
Later he let that girl go. As for whether she was still alive, he didn’t know.
Luo Jingheng knew that Luo Heng had been searching all these years. But no matter what he said or did, his father was bent on his own course of action.
When he learned that Luo Heng had found another target, he made a point to ask for the name. Luo Heng had made three attempts on her, and all three had failed.
The first time, Jiang Li was taken away by Wu Jianzhang and couldn’t be found.
The second time, Jiang Li had become a person of interest to the police, and she developed a heart problem.
By the third time, he was just too tired. He thought that perhaps only his own death would make Luo Heng give up the idea. But through a strange twist of fate, Jiang Li ended up saving herself.
"Have Wu Yonghui and his people gone back?"
Luo Jingheng sat up straight and asked Du Kang.
"Not yet. But they should have gotten the news by now."
Luo Jingheng nodded and closed his eyes to rest.
Wu Ming called Jiang Li back as soon as she got off the plane.
"Jiang Li, we’ve arrived. My master is here too. We’re at the hotel now."
Wu Ming’s voice turned somber. "My master told me he found me in a coffin back then. He thought I was born from a corpse, so he did everything he could to save me.
He didn’t know I had biological parents. My master says that, thinking back on it now, my fate had probably already been swapped by then.
No wonder Luo Jingheng asked who had extended my life."
As Wu Ming spoke, her voice choked with emotion. "It would have been one thing if they didn’t want me. But why did they have to try and take my life?"
We came from the same womb. Why would they favor one over the other from the very beginning?
They already abandoned me, so why are they still coming after me?
When Wu Ming thought of Wu Tong, it would have been a lie to say she felt no hatred or resentment.
Hearing Wu Ming’s sad voice, Jiang Li hated that she didn’t know how to comfort people.
"How about we have Xiao Ji hit him with a Heart-Eating Gu, then send him to a mental asylum? We can find a couple of little ghosts to sleep with him at night. Once he goes completely insane, we’ll let him dismember himself. How does that sound?"
As Wu Ming listened to Jiang Li, the jumble of sad thoughts in her mind instantly vanished.
"That’s... that’s so vicious, isn’t it?"
Jiang Li blinked. ’Vicious? If murder wasn’t against the law, she’d go handle the blade herself.’
"It’s alright, Jiang Li. My master said that every cause has its effect. Wu Yonghui will get what’s coming to him.
My master said it’s actually good that they’re here. We can destroy the medium used back then, severing my connection to Wu Yonghui. After that, he’ll have to bear the consequences of his sins himself."
"Mm," Jiang Li agreed.
"My master said Wu Tong and I are twins. They’ll probably make their move on the fifteenth of next month."
Jiang Li glanced at the calendar. Sixteen days left. No wonder Wu Yonghui was in such a hurry.
"Wu Ming, you all be extra careful. I’m worried Wu Yonghui will try something crooked."
"Then I’ll call..." Wu Ming cut herself off. ’Call the cops? Yeah, right.’
"Ahem, it’s fine. Didn’t Luo Jingheng say he could help? Nothing should happen."
Jiang Li pursed her lips. "I’m not sure if Luo Jingheng will help. You should still be careful."
"Okay, Wu Yonghui is here. I’m going with my master to see what’s happening. I have to go."
The line went dead. Still worried, Jiang Li sent a message to Miao Anji.
Miao Anji: [Got it, Sister. I’ve already put five on him! The non-lethal kind.]
Jiang Li looked at Miao Anji’s message. ’Five should be enough, right?’
She remembered how just one from Guo Tianqi had been lethal. ’Five should be pure agony.’
Reassured, Jiang Li closed the app and called Lu Xingye.
He didn’t pick up, and her heart began to pound with anxiety.
"Hello, Jiang Li."
Lu Xingye’s voice came through the phone, and the knot of anxiety in Jiang Li’s chest instantly loosened.
"Sister Qinghe said you went out to handle something. Where are you now?"
Lu Xingye clutched his stomach, looking at the girl he had just managed to save.
"COUGH COUGH, I’m fine. I didn’t answer before because my phone was dead. Just started charging it."
Lu Xingye motioned for the girl in front of him not to speak. "Jiang Li, my colleague is calling me. I have to hang up now."
Lu Xingye quickly hung up the phone, then coughed violently a few times.
"Mister, are you okay?" the frightened little girl beside him asked, rushing forward to help him.
"I’m fine. Let’s go see your grandfather first."
Lu Xingye glanced at the wound on his abdomen. It wasn’t deep. He could hold on for a while.
He led the little girl to an old man whose breathing was faint.
"Sir, you said you have photos from that time. Can you tell me where they are?"
The old man looked at his granddaughter beside Lu Xingye, and his mouth opened and closed.
"Just tell me where, and I promise I’ll get your granddaughter out safely."
