Seeing Crime Scenes in My Sleep

Chapter 232 - 226: The Photograph

"It’s... It’s..."

Under Lu Xingye’s hopeful gaze, the old man’s half-raised hand fell, and he breathed his last.

Lu Xingye froze, unable to snap out of it for a long moment. The little girl’s cries still echoed in his ears.

"Cough... cough, cough!"

Lu Xingye suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood. He was so close. He had been so, so close.

"Waaah, Grandpa, Grandpa!"

The little girl’s sobs brought Lu Xingye back to his senses. He took out his phone and called his colleagues to handle the scene.

He pushed himself up and looked at the old man’s house. The perpetrator had already burned it to the ground.

After taking a couple of breaths to steady himself, he staggered inside. A wave of heat hit him as soon as he entered, but he ignored the scorching embers and began to rummage through the debris.

When Wan Hui arrived with his men and saw Lu Xingye rummaging around inside, he immediately rushed in.

"Lu Xingye, are you crazy?!"

Wan Hui saw his burned hands and blood-soaked clothes and was so furious he dragged him right out.

"The photo," Lu Xingye said weakly, his face pale as he gasped for air.

"We’ll find it. You go to the hospital first."

Wan Hui had another colleague take Lu Xingye to the hospital while he stayed behind to search.

Lu Xingye lay in the hospital for a day before waking up on the second day. As soon as he tried to sit up, a sharp pain shot through his abdomen.

"You’re injured. Don’t move."

Lu Xingye looked at Wan Hui eagerly. "Did you find it?"

Wan Hui shook his head. "We turned the whole place upside down and found nothing. Do you think it could be somewhere else?"

Wan Hui handed him a glass of warm water. "We’re planning to check the Li Family’s ancestral graves. Maybe it was buried there. You just focus on getting better. I’ll let you know if we find anything."

"Okay. What about Li Xiaoru?"

Li Xiaoru was Uncle Li’s granddaughter.

"We sent her to the bureau. We have colleagues who specialize in this assigned to her case."

Only then did Lu Xingye lie back down, relieved.

He picked up the phone beside him. When he turned it on, besides a message from Zhou Tiancheng asking about the case’s progress, there were several from Jiang Li.

’So she is worried about me after all.’

He sent a reply: "Everything’s going smoothly. Don’t worry."

On Jiang Li’s end, seeing Lu Xingye’s reply put her much more at ease.

Yu Huannian was packing up their things nearby.

"Once we’re back, you have to stay home and rest, okay? No running around."

Yu Huannian now not only had to cook for Luo Jingheng and his people, but he also had to go to the training gym.

"Okay, don’t worry."

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK! There was a knock at the door.

Jiang Li turned to see Du Kang standing in the doorway.

"Miss Jiang, the Young Master knows you’re being discharged today. He would like to be discharged with you."

Jiang Li froze. ’What does he mean by that?’

’Be discharged with me? And after that?’

"Don’t worry, Miss Jiang. The Master bought the house next to yours to make providing care more convenient."

Jiang Li’s expression instantly darkened. ’Is this for "convenient care" or for surveillance?’

But it wasn’t like she could control where other people bought property.

Luo Jingheng’s eyes showed a flash of surprise when he saw Jiang Li waiting for him.

"Young Master, Miss Jiang will be discharged with you."

Luo Jingheng gave her a suspicious glance before looking away. "Is that so? Well, let’s go then."

Jiang Li listened to their exchange, her gaze falling on Du Kang.

’I thought Luo Jingheng had arranged all this, but now it seems he’s just a bird in a cage.’

Jiang Li got into Luo Jingheng’s car with Yu Huannian.

After dropping Jiang Li and Yu Huannian at their home, Luo Jingheng opened his eyes and glanced out.

"Young Master, we should get out."

Luo Jingheng frowned and looked out the window. The car was parked next to Jiang Li’s house. Recalling her expression from earlier, he suddenly understood.

He got out of the car, walked inside, sat down on the sofa, and paid no attention to his surroundings.

Du Kang glanced at Luo Jingheng, feeling a bit helpless. ’These were all the Master’s orders. There was nothing I could do.’

The atmosphere remained tense until Yu Huannian knocked on the door to deliver their meal.

Du Kang quickly let Yu Huannian in.

Yu Huannian set down the food and left immediately.

Du Kang looked at Luo Jingheng, who was still sitting there. "Young Master, the food will get cold if you don’t eat soon."

Luo Jingheng shot him a glance, then got up, found a room, and went to sleep.

Du Kang looked at the cold food and Luo Jingheng’s retreating back. ’Why does it feel like the Young Master is reverting to his old self again?’

When Yu Huannian returned, he sat down at the dinner table. "That Du Kang doesn’t seem like a housekeeper.

When I delivered the food just now, the atmosphere was really weird."

Jiang Li nodded in agreement. ’Luo Jingheng is an adult. It’d be strange if he *wasn’t* angry about someone making such a decision for him without his permission.’

’But then again, this probably isn’t the first time.’

Jiang Li picked up her chopsticks and started to eat. ’Heaven and earth may be vast, but eating is the most important thing.’

The next day, Yu Huannian delivered food to Luo Jingheng as usual, but when he arrived, he didn’t see Luo Jingheng, only Du Kang.

He didn’t ask any questions, simply putting down the food tray and leaving.

When he came again in the evening, he saw that the morning’s meal was untouched. Yu Huannian paused for a moment but still just put down the new tray and left.

When he returned, Jiang Li noticed his hesitant expression and took the initiative to ask.

"What’s wrong?"

"I didn’t see him when I delivered his food this morning, and I didn’t see him just now either. The food hasn’t been touched. No wonder he’s sick if he doesn’t even eat."

Hearing this, Jiang Li paused in the middle of eating. It reminded her of when she was alone, sometimes eating only one meal a day, or even being too lazy to eat at all, just living in a daze.

"I’ll go check on him. He’s a living person, after all."

Jiang Li got up and went next door.

DING-A-LING~

Hearing the doorbell, Du Kang went to check. Seeing Jiang Li, he opened the door. "Miss Jiang."

"Where is Mr. Luo?"

Du Kang quickly pointed to a room.

Jiang Li walked toward the room. "KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK. Mr. Luo?"

Luo Jingheng fought through his headache and opened his eyes. ’Did I just hear Jiang Li’s voice?’

In his daze, the knocking grew clearer. He got up to open the door.

Jiang Li looked at the frail Luo Jingheng. "Um, Xiao Nian said you haven’t been eating. I wanted to ask if the food isn’t to your liking."

"Cough cough, no, I just overslept."

Luo Jingheng walked out of the room in his slippers. "Cough cough... cough..."

Listening to the coughing behind her, Jiang Li was genuinely afraid he was about to drop dead.

"Does Miss Wu need any help?" Luo Jingheng asked, looking up at Jiang Li’s back, his eyelids drooping.

He hadn’t felt much while he was asleep, but now that he was awake, pain flooded his entire body.

Jiang Li had just opened her mouth to speak when a weight suddenly fell against her back.

"Mr. Luo? Luo Jingheng? Hey!"

Jiang Li turned and was startled to see Luo Jingheng’s eyes closed. ’Oh no, he didn’t actually die, did he?’

Supporting his weight, Jiang Li quickly called for help. "Housekeeper Du! Housekeeper Du!"

Du Kang ran up, and his heart skipped a beat at the sight. He immediately called the family doctor.

Jiang Li had no choice but to half-carry, half-drag Luo Jingheng back to his room. As soon as she entered, a wave of cold air washed over her.

Jiang Li put him down and checked for breathing. ’Thank god, he’s still alive.’

The doctor rushed in to examine him, and the next second, he was being whisked off to the hospital in a great hurry.

Jiang Li scratched her head and went back to her own house.

The next few days were exceptionally peaceful. Meanwhile, Wu Ming’s situation was also progressing smoothly; she and Wu Yonghui were currently playing the roles of a doting father and a devoted daughter.
