Seeing Crime Scenes in My Sleep

Chapter 239 - 233: Case Reenactment

After she finished speaking, Cheng Xiangyu’s breathing grew heavy on the other end of the line.

’How is that possible? Wasn’t that serial murder case from years ago already solved?’

’Could it be a coincidence?’

"Alright, thank you, Miss Jiang. Let’s stay in touch."

After saying that, Cheng Xiangyu hung up the phone. He propped himself up with his hands and stared at the case file from five years ago.

The same type of rope. The killer would first strangle the victim, drag them around the room, and then, when they were down to their last breath, hang them from the fan. The M.O. was a perfect match.

"Captain Cheng, I’ve sent you the crime scene photos."

Cheng Xiangyu opened the photos and looked at the triangular mark inside. He then picked up the photo from back then. They were completely identical.

’How could there be such a coincidence in the world? Don’t tell me we arrested the wrong person back then!’

Cheng Xiangyu’s expression was grim as he looked over the two cases.

Five years ago, the killer, Chen Longtan, had murdered four pregnant women in a single week, leaving no clues at the scenes.

Back then, they had solved the case thanks to the final victim, who had managed to escape.

Chen Longtan’s motive was simple. He felt unloved, which led to a paranoid conviction: it was better for the babies not to be born at all than to be born into suffering.

As this thought struck him, Cheng Xiangyu quickly dialed a number. "The victim..."

Feng Dong knew what he was about to ask. "The victim was a pregnant woman. Unmarried, pregnant out of wedlock. Her ex-husband ran off with someone else a month ago, so she was living alone.

There are clear drag marks at the scene, but all traces of the killer have been meticulously cleaned up."

Cheng Xiangyu’s brow furrowed. Everything matched. The case had left them helpless back then, and now they didn’t have another victim who had escaped.

Soon, the medical examiner’s report came out, confirming his suspicions.

"The killer was very cautious. The victim struggled violently before her death, but her fingernails were cleaned out. Aside from the victim’s own traces, the killer erased all evidence of their presence."

Cheng Xiangyu’s brow tightened. "Question the neighbors more thoroughly and check the surveillance footage. See if you can find any useful leads."

...

Jiang Li came to the hospital to see Lu Xingchen, carrying a thermos of soup made by Yu Huannian. Just as she entered the hallway, she heard a heart-wrenching scream from inside the room.

"AHH! Xiao Ye, it hurts so much! Just kill me! Kill me!"

Lu Xingchen was clawing at her own throat, desire and reason at war in her mind.

She was afraid she would demand the "thing" from him.

"Sister, it’s okay! Just hold on, it’ll pass! I’m here, don’t be afraid." Lu Xingye held the frantic Lu Xingchen, not letting go even as she scratched and bit his arms.

Leaning against the wall, Jiang Li’s heart ached with distress.

"Sister, don’t worry. I can give it a try." Miao Anji stepped forward and wiped away her tears. Her eyes were already swollen.

Jiang Li looked up at him. "You really have a way?"

Miao Anji scratched his head. "I’ve never tried it, but I can give it a shot. See if I can use a Gu Worm to draw it out."

Jiang Li hastily wiped her tears, pushed the door open, and walked in. She set the thermos aside and went to embrace Lu Xingchen.

"Sister Xingchen, don’t be afraid. Xiao Ji has a way to draw the poison out. Don’t be afraid."

Lu Xingye and Lu Xingchen both snapped their heads up to look at her.

Lu Xingchen’s pale lips trembled. "R-Really?"

"Yes, really. But it might hurt a little."

Lu Xingchen looked at her brother and instantly began to cry with relief. Nothing could be more painful than what she was feeling now.

Lu Xingye gently laid Lu Xingchen down on the hospital bed.

Miao Anji stepped forward, took out a small jar, and a bug crawled out. He placed it over the needle mark, and the Gu Worm immediately burrowed inside.

"AH! UGH!"

Lu Xingchen cried out in pain, veins popping on her forehead, but her heart felt a sense of peace.

’Being bitten to death by a bug is better than being ravaged by this thing.’

A few minutes passed, and Lu Xingchen’s condition visibly stabilized.

The Gu Worm shot out of her arm and died the instant it emerged.

Miao Anji pressed his lips together. ’This stuff... it’s really toxic.’

"Is that it? Is she okay now?" Lu Xingye asked, his face fraught with tension as he looked at Miao Anji.

Miao Anji went to check on her. "I was able to draw some of it out, but it will take several sessions."

Looking at the now quiet Lu Xingchen, Lu Xingye squeezed her hand. "It’s okay. However many it takes."

’After this is over, I’ll send my sister back to our hometown or even abroad. As long as she can stay away, for however long it takes.’

After a while, Lu Xingchen woke up. Though she still seemed a bit dazed, the intense craving inside her had subsided.

She turned her head to look at Jiang Li and Miao Anji beside her. "Thank you. Thank you both. Jiang Li, you’ve saved me again."

"It’s what I should do. Sister Xingchen, this is the soup Xiao Nian made. It smells wonderful. Quick, have some."

Jiang Li smiled and shook her head, then changed the subject, pouring the soup from the thermos and handing it to her.

Lu Xingchen hadn’t eaten all day. Now, smelling the aroma, she felt exceptionally hungry.

Watching Lu Xingchen finally eat something, Lu Xingye’s tense shoulders slumped in relief.

"I’ll watch over her. You should go get your wounds treated."

Jiang Li noticed the fabric of his shirt around his abdomen had gone stiff.

"*Ahem*, okay."

Lu Xingye turned and walked out, letting out a heavy breath.

’Thank God Jiang Li is here. Without her, I’m afraid my sister really wouldn’t have made it through.’

Lu Xingye had his wounds re-bandaged and got some medication before returning.

Lu Xingye had just sat down when he received a call from the bureau. Another retired colleague had also been injected with something.

He shot to his feet, gritting his teeth. "What the hell does Kun Sha want?!"

Hearing the name Kun Sha, Jiang Li’s eyes flickered.

Lu Xingye spoke for a few moments before hanging up. He turned back to Jiang Li and Miao Anji. "Xiao Ji, can you do me another favor? A colleague of mine is in the same situation.

He’s on his way to the hospital now."
