Seeing Crime Scenes in My Sleep

Chapter 240 - 234: Leaving No Regrets

The woman who had hung the person from the ceiling fan didn’t leave. She remained in the room and skillfully began to clean, erasing every trace of her presence except for the victim’s blood.

"Wh-why..."

The woman hanging in mid-air struggled to ask. The killer paused her cleaning and looked up at her.

"Why? I don’t know why, either. All I can say is, you’re just unlucky!"

With that, a soft chuckle escaped her throat. She lowered her head and resumed meticulously cleaning up her traces, not forgetting to double-check everything when she was done.

Her practiced motions made it clear this wasn’t her first time.

Before leaving, he even remembered to wipe his fingerprints from the doorknob.

As he turned to leave, he murmured, "Who’s next?"

Jiang Li jolted awake from the dream. She got up, went outside, and took out her phone to call Cheng Xiangyu. If he would be the one to call about a case like this, it had to be within his jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, Cheng Xiangyu was debating whether or not to call Jiang Li. Calling her would make him seem useless, but if he didn’t, he’d be left with too many unanswered questions.

The next second, his phone lit up with a call from Jiang Li. He answered without a second thought.

"Hello, Miss Jiang. Do you have any new leads?"

"Officer Cheng, this person is a serial offender. They meticulously clean the crime scene after every murder.

Just now, he killed another pregnant woman, and he’s already looking for his next victim."

Hearing this, Cheng Xiangyu let out a heavy sigh. "Miss Jiang, I know this might be a big imposition, but I’d still like to ask you to come and help us.

Five years ago, there was a similar string of serial killings. The MO and the targets were identical.

Right now, I feel like I’m caught in a massive web with no way out."

Cheng Xiangyu’s heart ached as he said this. He was afraid he had arrested the wrong person back then and framed an innocent man.

’What if that person was innocent...’

Hearing the pain in Cheng Xiangyu’s voice, Jiang Li agreed without hesitation.

"Of course, Officer Cheng."

’Besides, Kun Sha’s people are in C City right now. If I leave, maybe they’ll shift their focus.’

"Thank you. And don’t worry, we’ll cover all your expenses. We won’t let you help for free."

"Okay. But I’ll have to come the day after tomorrow. Is that all right?"

"Perfect!"

After hanging up, Jiang Li saw Lu Xingye and Miao Anji coming out of another hospital room.

"How is he?"

"It’s not the same poison. That bastard Kun Sha is just looking for guinea pigs," Lu Xingye said, his fists clenched in anger.

"I’m going to D City the day after tomorrow."

Lu Xingye looked up at her, instantly understanding her reasons.

"Jiang Li, you’re not Kun Sha’s only target this time. Even without you in the picture, he’d still come after us if he had the chance."

Lu Xingye didn’t want her to feel burdened. This was how these vicious drug traffickers operated; it wasn’t her fault.

"Whether that’s true or not, at least this will create a diversion. Xiao Ji, can you stick with Lu Xingye for the next few days?"

Jiang Li looked at Miao Anji. If he didn’t agree, she wouldn’t force him.

"Okay, Sister. You be careful," Miao Anji said with a smile.

He’d learned something from the internet over the past few days: money and power. He believed that if he worked hard enough to obtain them, no one would ever dare to target his Sister again.

The next day, as Jiang Li was leaving the hospital to pack, she once again noticed the couple following her.

The two had been following her since that day. Every time she turned around, they would flinch, avert their gaze, and scurry away in a panic.

She glanced back. This time was no different.

When Jiang Li got home, she saw Cao Kun, with a bag on his back, saying goodbye to Wu Ming.

"Wu Ming, Jiang is a good kid. I can rest easy knowing you’re with her. And you... take better care of yourself. Stop sending me money all the time. Your master is a capable man; I have plenty of money.

I’m heading out to take care of something big this time. I don’t know when I’ll be back, so don’t you worry about me.

If I happen to die out there someday, don’t be sad."

"Don’t say that! What nonsense are you spouting? Talking about dying... Cao Kun, what exactly are you going to do?!"

Wu Ming’s eyes reddened as she listened to Cao Kun. It sounded like he was giving his last words, and she didn’t want to hear it.

"Hey, alright, alright. What’s with the tears? Isn’t this perfectly normal? I’m just giving you a heads-up, not saying I’m actually about to die.

Enough talk. I’m leaving now." Cao Kun patted Wu Ming’s head, then turned and walked away quickly, as if afraid he wouldn’t be able to leave if he lingered a moment longer.

He saw Jiang Li as he reached the door. "Jiang, I’m heading out for a bit. Please take good care of this girl, Wu Ming, for me while I’m away."

With that, Cao Kun brushed past Jiang Li and left.

Wu Ming ran out after him, her eyes red. "Old Man Cao, I’ll be waiting for you at home!"

Cao Kun faltered for a step. Tears streamed down his face, and he quickened his pace.

Jiang Li looked at Wu Ming. "I’m going to D City tomorrow. Do you want to come with me? It might be a good way to clear your head."

Wu Ming wiped the tears from her face. "I’ll go. I’d just be sitting around at home anyway."

’I’m going to make a fortune and buy Old Man Cao a big villa to retire in,’ she thought. ’Then he won’t have to keep running off all the time.’

Jiang Li pushed open the door to her room and immediately stepped on something. Looking down, she saw it was a bank card.

She picked it up and saw the PIN taped to the back.

Jiang Li froze for a long moment. Recalling Cao Kun’s parting words, she glanced back. Wu Ming was still sitting in the living room, secretly wiping away her tears.

’Didn’t he say everything would be fine?’

Jiang Li’s hand trembled as she held the card. ’Did Cao Kun go off somewhere to die?’

’Should I tell Wu Ming?’

After just two seconds, she turned and walked toward Wu Ming. She knew the pain of losing a loved one. Regardless of the outcome, she didn’t want Wu Ming to have any regrets—to spend the rest of her life wishing she had seen Cao Kun one last time.

"Wu Ming, there’s something I need to tell you."

Jiang Li stood before her, holding the bank card.

Wu Ming looked at the card in her hand, finding it somewhat familiar.

"Isn’t that my master’s retirement savings card? He must be getting senile. He usually treasures that thing more than his own life. How could he forget it when going out?"

Wu Ming stood up and took the card. Then she saw the note taped to the back. It wasn’t her birthday; it was the date Cao Kun had found her all those years ago.

Wu Ming froze as if struck by lightning. Recalling Cao Kun’s strange farewell, the unease in her heart intensified.

"Jiang Li, what’s going on? This card is more important to my master than his own life. He never even let me touch it before. How could he..."

"Last time, when you were unconscious, Master Cao said you were suffering from a lost soul sickness. Then he took me to a grave. I don’t know what he did there, but when I asked him if he was okay, he said he was fine...

Wu Ming, I’m so sorry. I really thought nothing was wrong."

Wu Ming shook her head. "No, it’s not your fault. I don’t think I can go with you to D City anymore."

Wu Ming returned to her room, hastily threw some things together, and ran out to chase after him.
