Jiang Li watched her back as she left, then glanced around the empty house. Xiao Ji was in the hospital, and Xiao Nian was still at training and hadn’t returned.
That evening, when Yu Huannian returned to find only Jiang Li at home, he was taken aback for a moment. But without saying much, he picked up the groceries and went into the kitchen to cook.
At the dinner table, Jiang Li looked at him. "I’m going to D City tomorrow. Wu Ming is also going out on business. Could you help me keep an extra eye on Lu Xingye and Xiao Nian?"
’If I leave alone, I don’t believe for a second that Kun Sha and his men won’t be tempted to make a move.’
Yu Huannian had been about to offer to go with her, but hearing her request, he could only nod and accept the arrangement.
"Alright. But you have to be safe."
"I will, don’t worry." Jiang Li gave him a smile, then lowered her head to eat her meal.
Early the next morning, Jiang Li took a plane to D City. She landed three hours later, and the moment she stepped out of the airport, she saw Cheng Xiangyu there to pick her up.
When Cheng Xiangyu saw Jiang Li, he quickly stubbed out his cigarette and stepped forward, taking her bag from her hand.
"We’ll discuss the case in detail back at the station."
Jiang Li nodded and glanced over her shoulder, wondering if Kun Sha’s men had followed her.
Cheng Xiangyu followed her gaze and glanced back as well. Lu Xingye had already told him about her situation.
’I’m the one who called her here,’ he thought. ’No matter what happens, I’ll ensure her safety.’
Cheng Xiangyu took Jiang Li back to the police station.
The moment Feng Dong saw Jiang Li, he enthusiastically walked over with a case file, set it down in front of her, and hurried off to pour her a glass of water.
"Miss Jiang, this is the file on the serial killer case from five years ago. Please, take a look."
Jiang Li took a few sips of water before taking the file. As she flipped through it, her expression turned to shock, and she looked up at the two men. "Is it really such a coincidence?"
Cheng Xiangyu’s expression was grim. "It’s so coincidental that I’ve been starting to think I arrested the wrong man all those years ago."
He had been going over the file again and again these past few days. If it weren’t for Chen Longtan’s personal confession back then, he’d think he was losing his mind.
Jiang Li studied the evidence in the file. "If it wasn’t the same person, could it be an accomplice?"
Cheng Xiangyu looked at Feng Dong. "For two sets of crimes to be this similar... besides the original perpetrator, I can’t think of anyone else.
"Back then, the victim, Li Xin, identified one other person besides Chen Longtan. But that man was holding Li Xin hostage and was shot and killed on the spot..."
Cheng Xiangyu suddenly stopped, having found a blind spot. "The man was shot, but he fell into the river. The current there is treacherous, and they never recovered a body.
"Unless... he didn’t die!"
Jiang Li looked at Cheng Xiangyu and said with conviction, "They definitely aren’t the same person.
"According to Chen Longtan’s profile from five years ago, his motive was to punish women who got pregnant before marriage and ’save’ the children.
"But this new killer isn’t like that. He’s calm, methodical, and cleans the scene meticulously. The murder itself almost seems secondary."
Cheng Xiangyu turned to Feng Dong. "Feng Dong, any news on Li Xin?"
The moment this new case broke, he had assigned officers to watch Li Xin’s house. After all, she was the only survivor from the original attacks.
And as fate would have it, Li Xin was also pregnant—and in her third trimester.
"I’ll call and check." Feng Dong stepped aside to make the call.
"Hello, Officer Feng Feng, have you caught him yet?"
Li Xin asked, her teeth chattering, her terrified eyes darting around the room.
For the past few days, she hadn’t dared to even leave her house, constantly feeling as if a pair of eyes was watching her every move from the shadows.
It brought back the feeling of being trapped in that room all those years ago, waiting for death.
"Not yet. For the time being, please try not to leave the house. We have plainclothes officers in the area. If anything happens, just scream."
"But my due date is next month! If you haven’t caught the killer by then, am I supposed to give birth at home?"
Li Xin felt like she was about to have a breakdown. The more she thought about it, the more terrified she became.
"You... what the hell are you cops even doing?
"It’s been so many days! Wh-why don’t you have a single clue yet?"
Feng Dong listened to her frantic voice and quickly tried to calm her down.
"Miss Li, please calm down. We will catch the killer as quickly as we can.
"We’ve already confirmed that the killer isn’t Chen Longtan from all those years ago, but someone else entirely.
"We’ve also brought in an outside expert. We’re confident we’ll catch the killer soon."
Li Xin clutched her phone, glancing outside. Her apartment was on the ground floor. Now, anyone who walked past felt like a potential suspect.
"Th-then just be quick about it." After hanging up, Li Xin glanced at her mother-in-law, who was busy in the kitchen, and started to take deep breaths.
’My mother-in-law is here with me, and my husband will be home soon. Nothing will happen. I’ll be fine.’
Li Xin got up, cradling her belly, and went back to her room. Exhaustion washed over her despite her fear. She climbed into bed, but sleep wouldn’t bring her peace.
In her dream, the events of five years ago unfolded before her eyes, and she cried out in terror.
"No! Don’t kill me!"
Suddenly, she remembered something and grabbed the person beside her. "Zhang Ze, let me go! I swear I won’t turn you in."
"Zhang Ze, I’m begging you."
Li Xin gripped the man’s hand tightly, expecting him to let her go, just like he had five years ago.
But the next second, the boy’s once timid and innocent face twisted into a savage, terrifying sneer as he glared at her.
"Li Xin, I let you go? And then what? You go to the police, rat me out, and have them shoot me dead?
"In your dreams!"
The next instant, a hand clamped around her neck, and she was dragged to the floor. A sharp pain shot through her belly.
She cried out helplessly, "My baby! My baby!"
"Hehehe, I’m sure the baby in your belly would rather not have a mother like you.
"Don’t worry, I’ll help set it free!"
A sharp dagger appeared before Li Xin’s eyes, then lunged toward her.
"AHHHH!"
Li Xin screamed.
"Xinxin, what’s wrong? Don’t scare me!"
Hearing her mother-in-law’s voice in her ear, Li Xin looked at her, dazed, then immediately glanced down at her own belly.
She placed a hand on it, feeling the baby move, and her heart finally began to settle.
’The baby’s okay. It was just a dream.’
"Mom, I’m okay." Li Xin picked up the phone beside her and called Feng Dong.
The instant the call connected, she blurted out, "Officer Feng, it’s Zhang Ze! It has to be Zhang Ze.
"He’s back to get revenge on me! He... he must hate me for turning him in.
"The next victim... will it be me...?"
Li Xin’s voice hitched with a sob. "I really didn’t mean to... He-he was helping Chen Longtan, so he couldn’t have been a good person either.
"I... I was right to give him up."
As Feng Dong listened to Li Xin, he began flipping through the old case files. "Miss Li, could you please be more specific?"
"Back then... I-I begged Zhang Ze to let me go. I promised him I would never, ever turn him in.
"But... but when I got to the police station... I was just so scared."
’Now I get it,’ Feng Dong thought. ’But if Zhang Ze is still alive, wouldn’t Li Xin have been his first target?’
