"Surpised!!!! The crowd of fifty easily yelled. We both jumped at the sound of their voices. Many onlookers looked from Evan to me. Some looked surprised, some in distain and others smiled. A man that looked just like Evan made his way through the crowd and hugged Evan. He whispered in Evan’s ear and he nodded looking at me.
"Pleasure to meet you Cadence. I’m Evan’s father, Thurman." He reached out his hand. "Evan said you were beautiful and he was right." He smiled and stood to the side.
Both of his sisters came up next. They were both gorgeous. Light brown skin with those amber eyes. They both could have been models in my book.
"Hello, I’m Emilia and this is my husband, Markus. It’s nice to finally meet you." She held out her hand and we shook.
"This is our Mona, and her husband Steven."
"Welcome Cadence we weren’t expecting you until next month at the music festival."
"I had a conference this week in Atlanta so I thought I would surprise him." I could feel Evan’s eyes looking down smiling.
"She totally surprised me. She said she would call around lunchtime but she was knocking at my office door," he said holding my hand.
"That was sweet," his mother said.
"Daddy, daddy," I heard through the audience. The little girl that I saw on Evan’s phone was standing right before me. She was so pretty. Her eyes lit up when she saw Evan.
"Hey, sweetheart," he said grabbing her and picking her up. She kissed him on the cheek.
"Who is this daddy?" She spoke very proper.
"This is Cadence and Cadence this is Karenna better known as Kara."
I held out my hand to shake hers and she reached out to grab me. I took the little girl in my arms and she smooched my face.
"You’re pretty like my daddy said. Do you like my daddy?"
I could hear the inner circle gasp. I smiled down at Kara. "Very much," I said and she smiled.
"Then you can date my daddy. Just remember when he is bad no Popsicles for him okay."
I had to laugh. Her face was serious and priceless.
"I pinky promise." We pinky promised and she ran off in the crowd. I watched her and turned back to the group and laughed. They seem intense.
"I love kids." They all seem to smile.
"Well let’s get this party started Marc, Emilia’s husband said.
They all disbursed leaving Evan and his parents standing there.
"Oh, I forgot my necklace upstairs. Cadence will you come with me, I need someone to help me put it on."
"Yes ma’am," I answered. We walked up the stairs and she closed the door.
The room was huge. The room could accommodate a small village. There was an sitting area with a beige couch and two reading chairs. There was a coffee table and two end tables with lamps. The king size bed had the padded headboard with night stands and the footboard had a flat screen attached to it.
Decorative pictures hung on the walls and a small fireplace had a small fire in it.
"Sorry about Kara. Kids just say whatever is on their minds. I hope she didn’t offend you?"
"No it is perfectly fine. I have two sisters and they can be a hand full."
"Yes, Evan told me that you were raising your sisters and that you were in school at Tulane. Impressive."
"Thank you. I graduate in May with my master’s degree."
"Beautiful and smart," she said. "Have a seat while I look for this necklace."
I took a seat in one of the chairs. I didn’t feel too nervous as I watched the sun burying itself in the clouds in the sky.
"My son really likes you. He hasn’t brought a girl home in years. Normally when they meet Kara they run the other way."
"She is beautiful I don’t understand why?"
"Most of them are not thinking about being a potential mother to a child that is technically not the man’s biological child."
"If he loves and raises her it shouldn’t matter," I said looking at her.
"Evan told me what you said. I saw a change in him after you told him to fight for Kara. We love her as if she is really Evan’s daughter. At first he shied away from her but then they bonded. His schedule is so hectic that he doesn’t spend a lot of time with her. They FaceTime and chat but after the talk he had with you he changed that. They see each other during the week and he spends the weekends with her and she is in total awe with him."
I smiled. "I think it is important to have a father in a young girls life. Whether he is the biological father or not. I tip my hat off to him for being a good man," I said. "I wished my father would have shown me half the love that Evan shows to Kara." I looked away.
"Well thank you for what you said to him."
"You are welcome and I truly mean it."
"I know you do. He was miserable when you told him you wanted him to focus on Kara. It showed us that you put his daughter before your own needs. That makes you a good woman. Now it is time for you to rejoin him."
"I’m not good enough for your son. He is kind, sweet and just has a good heart. I could never be the one for him."
"You don’t see it? Evan loves his family and he loves you. I see it every time he mentions your name and I just saw it downstairs. I haven’t seen his eyes sparkle like that in years. Yaritza treated him wrong and I thought he would never get over her, but you came into his life and now I have the son, the man I knew he could be." She grabbed my hand.
"You are good for him. Just open up your heart to see that and I promise you he will love you."
I wiped the tear from my eye. I could see her tearing up too.
"Come on before my son thinks I had you trying to escape." She hugged me and she wiped the tear away.
"Everything is going to work out the way it is suppose to." She smiled and sat up.
"Come on let’s get our party on," she said shaking her hips. She may have looked uptight put the sista knew how to work those hips.
We headed back downstairs where people were doing the bus stop.
"Come on Cadence let’s show them how we do it New Orleans style."
Dorothy and I got on the floor and did our thing.
