Chapter 258: 258. Hostage Situation

By the time the distress talisman had taken effect, Zevik had already captured Queen Sophia using a cage made of grey smoke.

As the blinding pillar of light rose in the east side, the 5th Circle Assassin could hear an enraged roar coming from the castle’s middle. A terrifying presence was quickly approaching.

"Heh. I waited until the evening for this moment... Let’s see if you’ll catch up to me." Zevik sneered.

Heath, Emory and Isobel had already captured the princesses covertly in the morning.

Among the princes, Splennar was deemed irrelevant, but the 2nd Prince Roland had some value. Unfortunately, this prince was way too paranoid and always kept himself on guard.

Since nobody wanted to risk an exposure while capturing the target, this prince was also spared. However, the queen was of paramount importance and no amount of security could stop Zevik from carrying out his plan.

The reason he had waited until the evening was because, one, he was covering for his descendants with his stealth ability. And two, the queen was still near the king.

Even though Averon was merely at the fourth circle, he was still the monarch of this nation. There had to be various magical items on him that could temporarily shield him from hostile fifth circlers.

And in that time, the Storm Holder would definitely be able to capture the assailant. This was also another reason why he didn’t try to outright assassinate the king. Instead, Zevik patiently waited until Sophia went back to her quarters.

Even then, he didn’t act immediately. Bors could’ve realised that someone was lurking around and may have set a trap. Only when the queen went to her private lounge to take an afternoon nap did Zevik start to actively tail her.

When the war meeting began, most of the top combatants in this castle went to the throne room. This was the chance he’d been waiting for!

Whoosh!

As the roars of the angered royal commander resounded throughout the entire palace, Zevik swiftly retreated into the shadows.

As a recently advanced 5th Circle Assassin, he knew he would definitely lose in direct combat against Bors. But the other party wouldn’t be able to catch him if he wholeheartedly focused on escaping.

"You rat! Stay where you are!"

Within a few seconds, Bors stormed into the queen’s private lounge, paying no heed to customs. By then, the mysterious kidnapper had already reached the palace’s inner wall area.

In a couple moments, he would be out of the castle’s premises and onto the bustling streets. Then capturing him would be even more difficult.

"This speed..." Bors was shocked while giving chase. In a split second, he realized that a fellow fifth circler had targeted the queen.

Otherwise, how could the other party have gone undetected until now?

’Not good! That guy is already near the outer wall.’ Bors stopped thinking and immediately withdrew a short knife which was inscribed with various glowing runes.

The moment when the blade’s sheen reflected on his eyes, Bors resolutely cut his own finger, letting a drop of thick red blood fall on the tiled floor.

Rumble!

This seemingly ordinary blood caused an even larger disturbance.

Time seemed to have been frozen for the numerous people in the royal palace. Suddenly, a vast mana wave swept the area in a triangular formation.

Nearly ten dozen magic circles lit up on various spots of the palace, linking into a translucent dome that firmly covered the palace in a hemisphere.

Zevik, who was fleeing while holding the unconscious queen, was always on alert for any sneak attacks. Thus, he instantly sensed the mana wave spreading from the three magic towers that surrounded the palace.

Since Bors couldn’t reach him, he was launching a magical array to trap him. So Zevik quickly tried to breach the translucent dome, having full confidence in his abilities.

Usually, such a protective dome took about ten seconds to fully lock an area. But what happened was completely out of his expectations.

’Instant deployment?!’ Zevik’s expression turned grave. By the time he approached the outer wall, it was already sealed off.

Looking at the three magic towers that were glowing in the sunset, Zevik narrowed his eyes.

Had he already been exposed? Zevik knew that only 4th Circle Court Mages could properly coordinate these magic towers to form this dome.

On the other end, the palace guardians and knight captains were rapidly rushing towards his location. But they couldn’t match the speed of Bors who arrived at the outer wall in mere seconds.

"Speak! Who sent you here?" The royal commander looked down on the cloaked figure while pointing a broadsword. But he didn’t dare to carelessly get closer.

Zevik remained silent, thinking of ways to escape. At that time, Averon and his personal knights arrived at the scene, looking absolutely furious.

"I wonder what enmity this sir has with my family... If you let go of my queen, I may pardon this offense." Even though he was fuming inside, Averon still tried to maintain a regal image.

"Hehe..." Zevik chuckled as the guards surrounded him. He noticed that those court mages weren’t present in the king’s party.

’Sure enough, they’ve gone to stabilise this array... Bors must’ve used an unconventional method to activate it. But with Ivan gone, there is a weak point I can target.’ Zevik’s thoughts churned.

Although this instant barrier had caught him off guard, he wasn’t really flustered. After all, he was holding an important hostage.

In his grasp, the queen was lightly floating in a straight position, her limbs tied by strange smoke chains. Even her lips were sealed to prevent her from chanting any spells.

However, the thing that most troubled everyone else was a pitch black dagger gently poking her neck. The threat was clear. One wrong move and this despicable assassin would immediately kill her.

"You will not be able to leave alive if anything happens to her!" Averon gravely announced.

"Really?" Zevik, however, seemed unbothered and inched a dagger’s tip deeper into the queen’s neck. "Would you like to bet on that?"

"Stop!"

His attitude caused multiple headaches. No matter what, this was still a 5th Circle powerhouse.

If Zevik disregarded everything and went on a killing spree, most people in the palace wouldn’t be safe. Although Sir Bors would eventually deal with him, the losses would be simply unbearable. On top of that, the queen was in his hands.

"What do you want to do?" One of the royal guardians asked.

"I want to leave, obviously." Zevik answered in a mocking manner while slowly backing towards the barrier.

Veins popped on the hands of Bors. He was the type of person who would completely eradicate the enemy at any given chance. Not being able to act against Zevik made him rage internally.

A tremendous mana pressure fell toward the assassin but Zevik simply scoffed and withstood it.

"Hmph! You think I don’t dare to kill her?"

The ’young’ man narrowed his eyes and continued, "At worst, I’ll sustain some injuries and force my way out...I don’t believe this array can last for long."

Although he said that, Zevik himself had no confidence in making it out alive. Thankfully, the other party seemed to be unsure of his abilities.

’Shameless! Shameless! How can one be so shameless? This person has no dignity as a 5th circle powerhouse!’ Averon ground his teeth, vexed.

Finally, he took a long breath and spoke. "Very well... open the defensive array."

"But, Your Majesty..."

"Should we really..."

"Brother, we can’t let him leave!" Bors’ voice thundered and everyone agreed with him.

"So? You want to sacrifice Sophia to capture him?" Averon looked to be in pain as he confronted his brother.

However, there was an almost indistinguishable glint in his eyes, implying something else.
