Chapter 259: 259. Unexpected Development

Bors definitely noticed that glint and backed down.

Zevik couldn’t tell what they were planning but it was strange that this headstrong Bors agreed so quickly.

Very soon, everyone surrounding the assassin retreated ten steps and sheathed their weapons.

"No harm must come to my Sophia! Otherwise, I will stake everything to hunt you down!" The king was talking a lot of nonsense for some reason.

’They are trying to distract me...’ Zevik remained cautious. No matter how sincere they looked, he didn’t believe that they would let him off so easily.

After the king chanted a series of long and winding words, there was a change in the array. Zevik instinctively looked towards the magic towers and noticed that they had dimmed slightly.

The barrier flickered and dissipated. It seemed he could indeed step out and leave. However, Zevik didn’t immediately exit. Instead, he raised his left hand, as if wanting to grab the dagger.

He was actually sending a strange mana signature that only those with his bloodline would notice.

To those watching him, it definitely seemed as if he had ulterior motives and wanted to harm the queen. The tension was at an all-time high.

"You..." Before the king could speak, three shadows suddenly rushed toward the white-cloaked Zevik, brandishing their weapons.

"Cowardly abductor, let go of Her Majesty!" Two men and a woman shouted in unison while swiftly attacking Zevik who seemed to have been completely caught off guard.

"It’s the Isenwings!" Everyone beamed.

"A chance!" Bors and every 4th Circle Knight joined in while the assassin was about to defend against these unexpected pests.

Finally, this assassin had exhausted his luck! No matter what happened, he was sure to be captured today.

This thought lit up in the minds of all the bystanders for a brief moment. However, an unexpected development threw everyone off.

The Isenwings, who were supposed to stall the opponent, instead launched a ferocious attack toward the incoming knights.

Before Bors could react, Zevik flicked his free hand and captured a nearby knight by conjuring a grey mana whip.

He then yanked the knight right behind him, from where he was previously supposed to escape the barrier.

Boom!

As soon as the knight was thrown in that area, numerous magic circles lit up in the sky, bombarding the unfortunate knight with thick lightning bolts.

"Hah! Sure enough, that was a trap!" Zevik laughed maliciously, tightening his hold onto the queen who was about to wake up.

Flying upwards, he accurately dodged a wind slash that Bors desperately launched.

Whoosh!

He quickly left in a zigzag manner, avoiding the magical chains that seemed to manifest from the sky.

Zevik had already realized that this magical array had way more functions than just deploying a barrier. The earlier dimming of the magic towers was just a facade.

"No!" The king roared, launching his own attacks toward the fleeing Zevik. However, it was too late.

The assassin had already disappeared into the streets of Ulford, with Bors tightly giving chase. But, the distance between the two parties was increasing as seconds passed.

In this chaos, the three Isenwing clan heads had already disengaged from their opponents. They deployed their best escape techniques, fleeing in different directions.

They knew that most of the forces would chase after their ancestor to recover the queen. As for the rest of the knights and mages, how could those classes compare to assassins in speed?

Perhaps the court mages could’ve caught an assassin but they were still rushing over from the magic towers.

By the time they arrived at the scene, they could only await to be scolded by the King.

Averon, as a 4th Circle Knight himself, knew that he wouldn’t be able to match the assassin’s speed. It would all depend on his brother now. Also, this could be a trap set up by the unknown forces to truly assassinate him.

"Even the Isenwings have betrayed us..." The king muttered, feeling helpless. He then once again looked towards the cathedral, seemingly in a dilemma.

’No! We can’t wait any longer. I must ask for their help...’

As Averon thought of this, a royal guardian quickly flew over, panic apparent on his face.

"Your Majesty, the princesses... T-The princesses are missing!"

"What?!"

...

Frontlines, just half a day of travel from Ulford.

Smoke rose from a large fortress as monsters spilled through. Cries of soldiers being eaten alive resounded from time to time.

By now, the elven team had also joined with the second wave which had regrouped once again under Issac.

Minerva was in charge of planning the routes while Ash handled the logistics. The rest of the 4th Circlers leisurely commanded the monsters, making moves only when opponents of similar caliber appeared on the battlefield.

Since the war began, six 4th Circle generals had already been slain. Although the kingdom’s generals were in no way incompetent, the sheer number of the invaders wasn’t something they could resist.

On the northwestern side, Nyssa had already entered Nuving with the remaining monsters from Tartus. Unlike the first and second wave of monsters that left from the dungeon of sins, her group kept a low profile, merely destroying a few insignificant villages on the way.

The reason for that was to make sure that the following noble forces, led by Marquis Jones and Pristina, didn’t realize that they were assisting monsters.

Though the truth would come out once they reached Ulford. But at that time, they would be left with no choice but to take the winner’s side.

By midnight, the first wave had also entered Nuving. Since they were delayed due to his advancement, Jake didn’t let the monsters attack any other settlements along the way.

He even avoided the fortresses, heading straight for the capital city. However, there were still armies which managed to discover the activity of approaching monsters at night.

For these unfortunate soldiers of the kingdom, two dragons devastated their formations within minutes.

The more the monster army pressed toward the capital, the more such hindrances appeared.

Jake had no choice but to clear out the route in advance. At the same time, he began communicating with Issac and Zevik. He was pleased to find out that they’d done their job very well.
