Chapter 261: 261. The Early Battle (1)

"Maybe he’s already dead." One of the elf captains chuckled.

As others gave some thought to this matter, they also felt that this was most likely the case. Not everybody could be like Zevik who probably had a fortuitous encounter that allowed him to live longer.

"Even if that prince is still alive, he’d have to be in a similar condition as me before I consumed the life elixir." Zevik ultimately gave his verdict.

"Then it’s decided." Issac raised his voice, "We will crush them using sheer force."

"I’ve already received a message from master. He should be arriving from the west side in a couple hours. With our forces combined, this city will definitely fall." Ash reported as a fiery glow appeared in his eyes. He seemed to be longing for a battle.

Very quickly, the powerhouses went back to their positions.

A portion of the forces - composed mostly of large and armored monsters, appeared on the front lines, forming a defensive wall.

At the same time, tribal monsters such as orcs, ogres, goblins, and gremlins, etc made separate battalions and marched forward under the instructions of their leaders.

Individual monsters from moonlight forest heeded the commands of the elves and dryads as they formed a separate flank. This flank of monsters headed towards the nearby fortress to resolve any blockades.

Such a large number of soldiers couldn’t be placed in one location as a single area-of-effect spell could cause immense casualties.

That’s why they were separated in all directions. If the enemy marched straight toward the capital, it would be easy to directly launch a pincer attack.

Unless the enemies were entirely aerial, there was no way to avoid the royal army when approaching the city from any side.

However, the disadvantage of such a strategy was that the city itself would be in immense pressure if the enemy somehow breached the cardinal forces.

As the monster wave marched directly from the southside, the divisions on the southwest and southeast began converging, placing the monsters in the middle.

However, with the flank separating and heading to the western division, the main army didn’t have to worry about being squeezed from both sides.

"We cannot be embroiled with these divisions for too long. Otherwise, long range attacks from the city will disrupt our formation, allowing them to gain an upper hand." Issac calmly analysed the strategy while floating above the monster army, hidden in the fog.

He quickly looked down and shouted. "Summoners!"

Immediately, Tiara and the six 4th circle mages began chanting in a loud voice while holding their staffs high. They had been ready all along.

Very soon, a heptagonal magic circle outlined right above their heads, bringing spacetime fluctuations on the battlefield.

Following that, the loud cry of a turtle spirit resounded across the foggy plains. This was an entirely different totemic spirit which the summoners had never used.

Compared to the fire serpent, it was somewhat lacking in offense. However, it was extremely good at stalling opponents.

As soon as the dark blue turtle was summoned, the mages had already branded the approaching southeastern division of royal soldiers as its enemy.

Though it was impossible to directly control a 5th Circle spirit, giving a basic command was relatively simple.

The summoned turtle didn’t hesitate to breathe a chilling breeze which rapidly froze the very path of the royal soldiers.

Those bravely running upfront didn’t even have the chance to retaliate before they were turned into ice sculptures.

The southeastern division’s commander was a quick-witted man who immediately made the rest of the soldiers retreat.

With a sharp whistle, the army assumed a defensive formation. At the same time, he shouted, "Mages!"

All individuals who could study magic were deeply intelligent. They started casting fire-related spells to counter the chilling breeze.

However, this action required a few seconds and it was all the monsters needed.

Although the line of human sculptures acted as a wall which prevented direct clash, the monsters naturally split up and surrounded the southeastern division.

At the same time, the summoning of a 5th Circle spirit didn’t go unnoticed on the battlefield.

"All archers are to provide an assistance of uninterrupted volleys to the southwest." Bors roared.

"By your will!" The sound of thousands of bowstrings being pulled accompanied the resolute voices.

"Magic cannons, switch to flare mode and target the summoned creature!" Bors tersely nodded before shouting again.

Apprentices and 1st circle mages in-charge of the cannons immediately started adjusting the range and mode.

Periodic booms began ringing on the southern city walls, bastions and watchtowers.

"Bertram."

"Yes, commander?"

"Inform his grace that the enemy has engaged. Also, tell the northern generals to be on high alert, especially the northwest."

The chief strategist immediately nodded and bowed. With a flick of his fingers, a gust of wind lifted his body as he flew toward the central cathedral.

On the battlefield, it was still extremely foggy, so the soldiers stationed at the city couldn’t tell what exactly was going on. Only the mages and certain high-ranking warriors could gaze that far.

The small fortress on the southwestern outskirts of Ulford wasn’t built to house ten thousand men. Thus, the monsters who separated from the main wave immediately clashed upon that division’s soldiers.

This flank of monsters were rather varied and less in numbers. With the volley of arrows coming from the city, these less intelligent creatures died in batches.

Unlike human warriors, they weren’t armed and had no way of defending against such arrows unless they had hard exoskeletons or scales.

Some of the 2nd circle monsters were rather speedy and managed to dodge the arrows but they soon became the target of the mages on the other side.

After being caught by control spells, even these monsters would fail to resist against tens of skill attacks of ordinary warriors.

Clearly, the royal army division’s better discipline and teamwork proved to be superior against a wave of monsters which weren’t really united.

However, leading these monsters were three 4th Circle corrupted elves, who immediately began thinning out the royal warriors after realising their disadvantage.

Other than Edgar, who was an elder druid, Robert and Lexia were moonlight swordsmen. Assisted by nature spells, their blade attacks were enough to kill dozens of foot soldiers at once.

Seeing that the powerhouses on the other side were so unscrupulous, the general in-charge became furious, leaping out of the fortress with his deputy.

In normal warfare, 4th Circlers and above tacitly understood that they were capable of immense devastation and restrained themselves.

However, such human rules were useless against monsters. If the elves weren’t subordinated through corruption, they probably would’ve had some qualms about such actions.

But now, killing weaklings was nothing to them. Since the enemy side only had two 4th Circlers, they were happy to draw their attention and battle.

The faster they concluded the matters here, the better it would be for Lord Issac’s plan! Perhaps they would even conquer the city, getting master’s praise!

Fanatical glints appeared on the elven powerhouses as they confronted the general and his deputy.
